We have stayed in the overwater bungalows at the intercontinental. Pricey, but amazing. It's only money, and you can't take it with you. They were bigger than our first house, and way nicer.

Check out the Pearl on Moorea - it's a 40 minute ferry ride from where you'll get off the PG and there is much more to do & see on Moorea. Jim

I MUCH prefer Moorea over any of the other islands, snorkeled there among rays and black-tip reef sharks.
Soon as I entered the water the sharks swam away - apparently afraid of me!
The brave rays stayed around.

Mary Elaine and David, I stayed like you have planned, in an OWB at the Intercontinental in Moorea, and loved it for a 3 night pre-cruise, booked through Radisson for a very reasonable price back then (maybe $600+ per person). On the PG sometime before 2004 I would say. It was a college graduation gift to my son (and girlfriend), so I took another daughter along to share a cabin with me. Loved, loved it. We booked "excursions" from the hotel, a drive to the tip top of the island (I'm talking about a rough 4x4 ride to get up there), way above where the ship excursions go in their vans busses when the PG was there...this company had a special arrangement with who owned that property. I think that was the day we also went to a pineapple plantation, and visited a rum store for potent tastings, and up to the top of another peak with some canons from one war or another. The views were beautiful there, too, just from a different view point. We also parasailed with some outfit from the beach from the hotel. Do it! That guy put us up so high in the sky like I've never been on tied to a boat before. I was physically breathless. He told my kids in the boat he was then going to "dip" me, and my daughter said "better not, or she'll have your job tomorrow". Thank god he didn't. I loved the whole thing, except for the birds at breakfast terrace in the morning. Get ready for sticker shock at restaurants. Same everywhere you go that is nice, and it's a short stay.
I have not stayed at any other hotel, so you should look around. But my older daughter spent her honeymoon there, I just can't remember the name of the hotel, but it was in the luxury category. I'll ask her.

Mary Elaine, finally reached my daughter , and she honeymooned in part at Sofitel, the other hotel you mentioned. The also spent time in Bora Bora and i think Ta a hah or however it is spelled (one island where the PG visited just for the day. Her comments about Sofitel: ( as an aside,I will also say that the snorkeling right off the owb's at The Intercontinental was also great, but I would not eat dinner there the way it was back in 2003. We went to town for dinners.)
We loved loved the snorkeling there, and the food was great, and our room was my fave of all the places. Didn't like the pool, though. It was freeeeezing cold! Is she only going to moorea? We left from the Hilton for one of our excursions, and it looked really nice and fun there too
