Sorry Claudia JAX short for Jacksonville - sure it was just local news but thought some other Floridians might see it -

What a great welcome home from their friends and neighbors. That'll create some interesting table conversation. I wondered where Jean had been hiding lately. I didn't realize we had LCT'ers on board the Seabourne Spirit. Welcome Home Jean and Clyde!

Well, guys, I guess it's time I came out of hiding and told you all about this amazing business. Actually, I haven't been hiding--just trying to get over terrible jet-lag after flying from Singapore-Paris-Miami-Atlanta-Jacksonville last Fridday-Saturday. We got home at 10 p.m. Friday night which I guess was Saturday Singapore time.Anyway, we've been so swept away by all this publicity that I just haven't had time to post. I told Olivia I didn't know how to do it on the Spirit but truly the real reason was it took so long to navigate on the computer that I was just eating up my minutes staring at a blank screen! So I just checked for email, etc. But this media frenzy is unreal. The Osprey folks have just been the best-they planned this huge affair for us last Wednesday night with the press present (great blaring lights in the parking lot with that big antenna up in the air!) and all the residents here dressed up like pirates. You saw some of them on that great video (how do you guys know how to do these things???). Then a truck came slowly into the parking lot towing a huge float looking just like a pirate ship; ablaze with lights and loaded with very realistic (movie-types, not Somalian types!)looking pirates shooting off fireworks and throwing gold coins and Mardi Gras beads at us. Joanna if you ever went to the Shrimp Festival here at Fernandina you know what I mean. They do this every May at the Festival. Amelia's schools are called Pirates and the whole island has a history of pirate attacks hence the pirate float, etc. Anyway it was a night to remember. The interviews were nerve-wracking and I look 100 years old not to mention fat-- I gained 8 lbs on that cruise! But as someone here said, "how could you not, eating in a 6 star restaurant for 47 days". Indeed. The news got it half right about Canada. We did book the "freebie" 7 day cruise they offered us from Gloucester, Mass. to Quebec and back next October. I mean they offered everyone on that segment of the cruise 7 free days anywhere you wanted to go and good for two years. Not bad, hey? But I think we are sticking closer to home. MUSH was mentioned but the media didn't pick up on that. We also have booked a 7 day cruise on the, get this, St. John's River next March! Joanna, only you would know how funny that is. But a lot of our friends here are doing it on that small American Cruise line (all inclusive, guys) so it should be fun. Well, enough so far. I'll give you my lowdown on Seabourn soon. I know I'll bring down the wrath of the CC Seabourn diehards if I say too much so maybe I'll hold up until MUSH!! Thanks so much for your concern. It was a scary time, believe me.

Wow Jean!!! What an experience. Not only the experience off of Somalia, but once home having the Pirates showing up with all the media hoop-la! Someone went to a lot of planning to pull that off.

I know this had to be one hair raising experience, but I am glad to hear that they gave you a free cruise out of the deal. We will be interested to hear the other Seabourn details, even if we have to wait till MUSH!!!

Glad you guys are safe and back home.

Jean & Clyde

Welcome home. I loved reading about your pirate party, but I am so thankful you all are safe. Rest up, enjoy the upcoming holiday week. And if those CC Seaborne people give you a hard time just let me know. I will defend you all the way, as will others on this board.
Where is the St John's River?

Betty: The St. John's River flows Northward from somewhere south of St. Augustine (I think--I'm on shaky ground here-help me out, Joanna and Marc) up past Jacksonville and out to sea. I believe it is the only river in the US that runs South to North. Anyway, it's not very big or long and I doubt there's that much to see but we'll be with a lot of friends so we'll have fun no matter what. Does it go to Sanford, Marc?
Thanks everybody for your good wishes. It is so heart warming to know there are such good friends on this board.
My criticism of Seabourn isn't that bad; it's only that the Seabourn folks are so defensive if a single negative is pointed out and believe me it wasn't all perfect. Food was on a par with Radisson in my opinion. But the card room was a joke as is the pool. Going out in inclement weather to the Veranda restaurant for dinner isn't too nice. Lecturers were non existent. There were some entertaining lectures on opera and that sort of thing but nothing much on the countries we were visiting. Well, I guess I need more to do on so many sea days. Did read a heck of a lot of books! And I definitely think there is more closet space on Mariner/Voyager/Navigator and of course I hate tubs and that's what they have. The ship was going into drydock after we got off and I guess they are upgrading the TVs, etc. Smoking was a problem (sorry, Marcie and Joanna!) in the Lounge during cocktail hour and lectures but I think that's going to be banned after the first of the year. And of course the so-called balconies are another joke. We didn't have one but all they have is a big sliding door, essentially. On the plus side are the wait staff; they all were terrific and knew our names right off the bat and knew what we liked and brought it right to us without being asked. That WAS nice. What was really nice was the all-inclusive feature. It was so nice to go to the Club for cocktails before dinner and not have to sign any chits. And eating with Staff was almost a nightly thing or with the entertainers so that you got to meet a lot of people. Seldom ate alone. And always there was your name on the table with probably 8-10 people. So that was a plus. Thundering out right now so I'll quit.

Jean, was there a real nice couple on board Seabourn with you named Jan & Harry Hufford? (Jan is very tall and knits constantly). I seem to think they were but maybe I dreamed this!

Marcie:No, you didn't dream it;remember I asked you if you knew a Jan and Harry and you said you played trivia together on the WC. She remembered you. I forgot she knitted a lot but you're right, she did! BTW her team won the championship Trivia on the Seabourn cruise, too. We ate with them quite a lot. Interesting couple.

Hi, Joy, good to hear from you. Yes, we are home and okay--just pretty sick of all the media attention over one hour of peril! I think our little village here is desperate for news!

Have you been doing your usual amount of travelling (a lot)? Let us know what's been going on in your lives.
