Oh, Pam...I thought Rich was finally on the road to recovery and when I relooked at this thread and your last entry, my heart dropped. You and your family are in our thoughts.

Dear Pam and Mark:

Like Andi, our heart sunk when reading your latest post but rest assured it will only redouble the intensity of our prayers.

Tomorrow I will be attending a Christian Businessmen's Club breakfast and will have Rich
added to their prayer chain.

Once again, he's making a little bit of progress. They have let him wake up, he's very alert (and demanding, according to Tammy). Tammy's mother held the cell phone to his ear for me to tell him hi, and he whispered "hi mom" and then "I love you".

He's still very sick, but I'll take every minute sign of progress that I can take.

Yes, when patients get crotchety it means they are on the mend and want to get better, Pam!

He is very much awake now, and wearing both of us out with everything he "needs to tell me". I have to read his lips and he goes too fast. He gets so frustrated, but then he backs up and starts over.

He still has a long, long road to recovery, but the doctor said that it looks like the killer syndrome has finally been turned around.

Rich is doing so much better! On the flip side, he's finally realizing how sick he was, and now everything is scaring him to death. I sat with him for several hours today so he would stay more relaxed during dialysis; my hand on him seemed to calm him a lot. That started happening on the very first day that Sonja and I were here. I feel guilty, but I'm not going back for the 8 pm visit, I'm going to bed early. I know that down the road he'll understand, and right now he still sleeps enough that time isn't something he is recognizing.

Now they are talking about just sending him to rehab, he doesn't need that specialized ICU room anymore. The kidney doctor remaines completely confident that his kidney function is going to return just any day. Absolutely amazing.

Pam,

Happy for good news. Don't feel guilty - be gentle on yourself - this is a lot to take on. If you don't take care of yourself a little bit, then you won't be able to take care of everyone else too! It takes a lot of energy to be there and take care of Rich.

All of this is such GOOD news, Pam. It's a very good thing for you to get some well-deserved rest. I love the "touching" hand that you are giving Rich. It's very powerful. Whenever I am sick or have high anxiety, Don puts his hand gently on my arm, head or hand. It REALLY calms my heart palpitations & breathing, and helps me fall asleep. I'm so glad you are seeing results from your gentle touching. Take care. We care!
