Those of you who have done TransAtlantic Crossings chime in and give me your thoughts. We have never done a crossing and was wondering if that many days at sea gets a little boring or is it just pure heaven. I would imagine they plan more activities than normal. I'm sure the weather has a great deal to do with the whole experience and of that there is no control. What are your experiences.

Thanks, Jan

Jan...seadays are our favorite days and you'll have lots of them on a crossing.

They plan many extra activities including enrichment lectures, cooking demonstrations, handicraft activities, bridge lesson...and more.

Sometimes it's a challenge to choose what to do - there are TOO many options!

They have a theme called The Regent Festival which includes the best of the themed offerings on this year's crossing. We're all excited about it! It will be our first, but, we love sea days too.

I noticed on the Voyager 2008 Spring crossing that they are stopping off in Bermuda, the Azores and Funchal so you don't have 8 straight sea days.

Hi Jan,

My husband, Alan, and I will be cruising on our first crossing (CROSS) Nov. 2007. Initially, I did have some concerns as to how I would do with so many days at sea. In the past, we've selected very port intensive itineraries, preferably with no sea days. We finally reached a decision to give the crossing a try.

The first half of our crossing will be very port intensive; the second segment sea days. I'm hoping I'm so tired out from being on the go during the first segment, that I need those sea days to wind down on the second segment!

I'd love to have too many options from which to choose on those sea days!

John, that is a nice itinerary for the spring 2008 crossing, but I don't need Bermuda (been there on land) to get me through the 8 days. We get get the added ports of Lanzarote, Agadir and Casablanca in Morocco! I am convinced we have a great itinerary!

Olivia, I hope you find these ports interesting. Crystal, mom, sis and I stopped in Agadir and Casablanca on our Silver Wind cruise in November. You might get some ideas of excursions from my review . The Goats in Trees excursion is a must!!!! :D

Jan, we are scheduled on CROSS and had some of the same questions about a crossing. This will be our first, and now that it is booked, I'm looking forward to both the activities and the relaxation very much, especially after the previous port-intensive week. Promise to report back.

Beth, thanks much for the link to your review. Very interesting information about both Casablanca and Agidir. The goats in trees photos I have seen look like nothing else I've ever heard of!

Jan, we too are going to be on CROSS and are looking forward to eight relaxing days at sea. We have done the port intensive cruises before and we find that we look forward to having some sea days. Now we will find out whether we like back to back to back to back... sea days! However we also have the benefit of sailing with Kathy, Denise, and Priscilla and several other LCT friends that I am sure will not allow us to be bored.

Priscilla, Just to warn you, most of our excursion which included Goats in Trees was to Touradant which was a shopping stop to a souk. We were told that credit cards weren't accepted, but found later that we could have used them.

Beth, thanks for the link. I think I'll pass on that Agadir excursion. I hate it when Regent takes us mainly to places to shop, then in just a rather short excursion, has to include a snack stop that always runs longer than it should. I'm thinking of ship's tour in Casablanca, but not even sure about that, as I'm sure taxi's are readily available in that port.

We took the Voyager transatlantic from Barcelona to Ft Lauderdale in 2004. After a hectic week of port visits going from Barcelona to Tenerife, the next eight days at sea were pure bliss. They did have plenty of events to keep us busy. It was a great cruise for earning tokens! :D

Olivia, I do understand your feelings about the long excursions. Our trip was very similar to your description with snack stop. I hadn't been to a souk before so I did want to experience one. I've crossed that off my places to visit list!!

We did Alhambra while in Malaga, full day tour to Seville while in Cadiz, went to Sintra while in Lisbon, the volcano and camel riding in Lanzarote, and took it easy and walked around Tenerife on our own. The first three were all day excursions and all wonderful.

From Wikipedia:

Quote
A souk (سوق, also sook, souq, or suq) is a commercial quarter in an Arab city. The term is often used to designate the market in any Arabized city. It may also refer to the weekly market in some smaller towns where neutrality from tribal conflicts would be declared to permit the exchange of surplus goods.

Though each neighbourhood within the city would have a local souk selling food and other essentials, the main souk was one of the central structures of a large city. A central marketplace, it was where textiles, jewellery, spices, wooden sculptures and other valuable goods as well as the money changers were arranged in a line. A quadrilateral of stone-vaulted streets parallel to or crossing each other or a tight mass of buildings too packed together for roads to intersect them. The workshops were further away from this centre of exchange as were the main residential quarters – those the wealthier merchants or scholars might live within the centre of the city.

The souk was a level of municipal administration. The Muhtasib was responsible for supervising business practices and collecting taxes for a given suq while the Arif are the overseers for a specific trade.

In a souk, the final price of an item is reached by bargaining with the shopkeeper. Traders of a given commodity would all sell in the same souk, thus ensuring a competitive market. In some African countries the souk was a place where people could come and talk, or sit down to tell stories.

Thanks, Marc. Please elaborate further on your tour in Lanzarote.

I knew that a souk was a marketplace. Wondering if this is a souk worth seeking. Anyone????

Sea days are wonderful! They give you the opportunity to try everything the ship offers. On port intensive cruises, it's hard to fit everything in - especially the night life. With sea days, you can burn the candle at both ends with a nap in-between <img border="0" alt="[vhappy]" title="" src="graemlins/icon_vhappy.gif" /> .

On our crossing in Nov. 05, we went to Lanzarote, Agadir and Cassablanca. I found the souk's to be overwhelming do didn't shop in them. But, they were an interesting glimpse at another way of life.

Denise, On our Agadir excursion to the Touradant souk, (it is called Little Marrakech), we were guided through many long darkish rows until we got to an open area. There our groups shopped. The shop owners bargained and were friendly. I'm sure the guides got their cut. One couple interested in antiquities requested going to a particular shop and were dropped off there.

Thanks, Beth and Donna. The souk sounds quite interesting to me so we may take that excursion. If it's part of the culture, I'm all for the experience.

The first and port-intensive segment of CROSS offers the Cousteau Society lectures. I wonder why they are scheduled during the first segment and not the TA portion.

The "Energizer Bunny" has no comprehension of the word "nap." ;) . However, Alan understands fully and completely!

You guys are going to have so much fun! We feel we would not have been exposed to the culture very much if we hadn't visited the souk, (and the goats in the trees!), the casbar, & Casablanca. I was fine in the souk until I ran into the goat legs without a goat attached to them..... I was able to buy little items in the souk for family that were representative of their culture at a decent price. We also liked riding the camels on Lanzarote :) Lots of laughs.

The excursions all sound interesting, we are definitely interested in the Volcano and camel riding in Lanzarote - maybe the Touradant tour in Casablana and not sure yet in Agidir. I've read that Agidir has great beaches, and there are camel rides available on the beaches.

We are definitely going to have fun. Denise, as the official "energizer bunny" of the trip, you can keep us all going while the guys nap!!! :D :D

Beth, Marc and others, thanks for your information about the souk. Donna, "overwhelmed" probably is a good description of what my reaction might be. I'm the antithesis of a shopper/bargainer. Still, the excursion has some appeal just to see this slice of local life. Decisions, decisions.

Denise, I hadn't seen that about the Cousteau Society lectures. I thought they were on the crossing segment, which is what makes sense to me. Is the information on the RSSC website?

Editing to add: This is my 1000th post! A milestone!

Negotiating with the vendors in the Souks will be fun for me. It's like a good game hand. One thing you need to be careful of is not to ask about an item unless you are serious about buying it - you insult the vendors. We are used to fondling our merchandise and then deciding if we are interested. I've read this a number of places about buying in the Muslim countries in the marketplaces.

Thanks, Betty. I'm sure some of my 1000 posts have been inane, though. :D

Denise, scratch my question about the Cousteau lectures. I do see that the RSSC website lists them under Onboard Activities for the first segment of CROSS. I guess I had just assumed the lectures were the second week. Maybe the Cousteau people don't want to go on a crossing!
