Hello all,

We are considering the Regent November 28 sailing which includes the Amazon and are really getting conflicting information regarding risks related to the yellow fever vaccine for people over 60. Anyone have experience with entering Brazil with a physician's waiver on the vaccine?

BruceC, yes, I have heard of that before, several years ago, but believe it was a person who wasn't even traveling on the Amazon, just getting off in Rio as was I. Seems it was not officially required there, except by Regent. I got it anyway. Next trip, I did the Amazon, and so it was still valid as I would have needed it there. I had no reaction to the shot whatsoever.

Please let us know what you find. There is not really clarity on this issue from this board as I remember for those going on the Amazon. You will need to deal with Regent on this, and might ask your TA to inquire.

My wife & I had no reaction to the yellow fever shot when we were about 65. It's expensive but good for 10 years and might be needed when you visit other parts of the world. People that had a waiver got quite a hassle about it, particularly if the doctor didn't think the reasoning was valid.

Thanks, it sounds like it may not be a big problem.

The "Lovely Miss Lynn" and I had our shots well past the 60 year point and had no problems. We get our shots at Mayo Clinic. I'm sure they would have warned us if there were any kind of a potential problem. Get the shot!

BruceC,

My wife and I had yellow fever vaccinations last year shortly after we turned 65. Other than a pain in our pocketbook, we did not have any adverse reactions to the vaccine.

Here's some information from the CDC that might be of interest to you: http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/notices/outbreak-notice/yellow-fever-brazil.htm and http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/yellowb...ine-requirements-and-recommendations.htm .

If you decide to get a vaccination waiver from your physician, be sure he or she fills out the appropriate section on the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis in addition to giving you a letter of waiver.

Also, our doctor strongly recommended vaccination against Hepatitis A in addition to the yellow fever vaccination.

We got yellow fever shots 3 years ago for an Amazon cruise - we were in our early 60's. We had no problems and Kaiser did not tell us of any adverse effects.
