Ngaire, on Marcie's thread about Betty, you mentioned that Amex contacted you and that they are providing services. For our next cruise, we are using the Amex Platinum for tracking number but paying on another Amex for miles. Is this foolish? What other benefits does Amex Platinum provide while traveling that aren't found with other credit cards, Amex branded included?

thanks,

Ngaire, I have the same ? as Marc. How does this work if you own the Platinum but pay for the cruise with a different card? Betty and Al have the same AmEx insurance we have that covers you (as a secondary insurance) whenever you're more than 150 miles from home. Al said that they are paying for the evacuation/airlift. Ray is the one who turned us on to this AmEx insurance here on LCT.

Thank goodness Betty & Al have a seperate policy that covers trip interuption coverage.

I am trying to post the information here but it is an acrobat reader document and it wont post over to the forum. Tomorrow I will get JULIE to do this she is much smarter than me on these things.

Yes you can use a different card from your platinum card as long as you have a platinum card you qualify.

The Global Assistance Unit (makes arrangements, helps with flights etc although you pay they do the arranging for you) can help any American Express cardholder, but platinum cardholders do have an additional benefits. What I post tomorrow will be the Platinum benefits. The optima card is not listed in the cards that qualify.

Betty's experience does make you think about having adequate coverage - is it necessary to have the additional policy that Marcie is referring to if you have the plat card?? Joanna

I have a write up that I will post here when I get in the office about supplemental insurance IF you dont take the regular insurance. The premiums are pretty cheap on these policies as the odds of this happening are slim. Travelex has this and I am sure many others do too. Most people take insurance to protect against cancellation and getting their money back for the trip. .

The added bonus of AMX Platinum is nice if you have that as you have an AMX Platinum card. Will post the AMX information when I get into the office.

Another good option is MedJet that is paid annually and covers you or your family for a year. They will fly you HOME in a medical jet from anywhere in the world. I cannot remember the cost off hand but it is around $200 annually. If you travel a lot in a year that is a nice thing to have. Remember the odds of this happening are slim so that premium is really pretty good annually considering the cost of flying someone home.

We have some kind of insurance coverage that we pay extra for, through Amex Platinum. And we've had the Medjet coverage for years and years; it isn't very expensive, and it's such comfort to know we have that card in our wallet.

A neighbor and her husband rented a motorcycle somewhere in rural Mexico, many years ago. She fell off and literally crushed her hip; the Mexican doctors kept insisting that they MUST do surgery on her, but her husband wanted her to have it done here. He had stay awake constantly to keep her from being carted off to surgery, while frantically trying to find an ambulance plane to get her home. It cost a horrible amount of money, and within a couple of weeks of hearing about it, we joined up with Medjet.

Here you go. Kind of hard to read it did not post over that well but too much to type again.

Emergency Assistance Coverage

Travelex
You can purchase limited coverage from Travelite that includes everything except Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption. Rates are as follows: Age: 1-34 $19, age: 35 – 60 $29, Age 61-70 $33, Age 71-75 $44 and 81+ $93.

The following items are covered. This is a very inexpensive way to cover yourself for emergencies that may come up during your trip. It does not take the place of regular full insurance and you are covered for all these items plus trip cancellation and trip interruption if buy regular insurance. This is an economical alternative if you elect not to take regular full coverage for an emergency on the trip. There is NO cancellation or trip interruption coverage that will refund for cruise fare, and that is what most people want to insure.

Please refer to the brochure for complete definitions, general exclusions and limitations. This is the information from the Travelex policy.

Trip Delay / Missed Connection: If your trip is delayed for 5 hours or more, we will reimburse you for certain additional expenses for accommodations, transportation and meals and/or for unused non-refundable expenses for your trip.

Itinerary Change: Covers certain expenses if the travel supplier makes a change in your itinerary after your scheduled departure date which prevents you from participating in an event/activity.

Medical Expense: You are covered for emergency expenses incurred as a result of sickness or injury during your trip.

Please note that evacuation is only if your condition is “life threatening”, which is a loose term. Also note it says it will return you home when “adequate” treatment is not available at a local hospital. I think it necessary to understand that this sentence is packed with “outs” for the insurance company.
Medical Evacuation/Repatriation: Covers, if an injury or sickness first occurs during your trip, for medical evacuation when your condition is acute or life threatening and adequate treatment is not available at a local hospital or medical repatriation for you to return to your home or a hospital near your home for continued treatment. Covers up to $5,000 for the repatriation and return of remains. Any use of this benefit must be pre-approved and arranged by the authorized Assistance Company. (This number will be provided to you on your “Confirmation of Coverage” and all arrangements must be made using this service. A physician must determine that evacuation is necessary. In addition, if a local hospital is unable to treat you, please note that you may be transferred to a hospital “near” your home, but not necessarily in your home town.)

Baggage: You are covered for the loss, theft or damage of your baggage and passport, as well as for loss due to unauthorized used of your credit card.

Baggage Delay: If your baggage is delayed for 24 hours or more, we will reimburse you for the purchase of additional clothing and personal articles.

Accidental Death & Dismemberment: You are covered for loss of life, limbs or sight due to an accidental injury while on your trip.

TravelSolve Travel Assistance & Concierge Service: TravelSolve helps you find your way more easily whether you are traveling domestically or internationally. You can access a wide range of services on a 24/7 basis both before you go and during your trip. Services include:
¨  24 hour medical assistance helpline
¨  Medical evacuation/repatriation
¨  Baggage tracking
¨  Lost/stolen passport/card assistance
¨  Emergency cash transfer
¨  Emergency air/hotel/car rental bookings
¨  Destination information and advice
¨  International dining recommendations
¨  Hospitality & event ticketing

This TravelSolve is really of great benefit if you find yourself stranded and ill in a foreign land. They will make necessary plane reservations etc and assist you in getting home and with your emergency needs. They are experienced at this type of arrangement and can be a big help when you are already in a stressful situation.

American Express Platinum Coverage
Travel Emergency Assistance Description
The emergency services herein described are provided to all United States Platinum Card members, Fidelity American Express Platinum Card members, and the Centurion Card members, including additional Platinum Card members, Fidelity American Express Platinum Card members, and the Centurion Card members with a Card on an account that has not been suspended or cancelled, who are traveling on a trip of 90 days or less, and 100 miles or more from the Card member’s Amex U.S. Billing address. Additionally, coverage is extended to each of the following members of the Card member’s family who are traveling with the Card member: the Card member’s spouse, dependent children under the age of 23, and children under the age of 26 who are enrolled in school on a full-time basis.

Note: Coverage extends to Family Members of Platinum Card, Fidelity American Express Platinum Card, and the Centurion Card supplementary Accounts. Provision of services is subject to verification of coverage eligibility.

Access: Access to the services herein described can be made 24 hours a day by means of the following: within the United States and Canada, via a toll-free telephone call to 1-800-345-AMEX (1-800-345-2639); from outside the United States and Canada via a collect telephone call to 1-715-343-7979 or via fax to 1-715-345-1219.

Services: Travel Emergency Assistance (“TEA”) shall provide, at no cost except as specifically noted herein, the following emergency services to covered Card members and their Family Members.

A. Pre-Trip information is available to the covered Card member. Information will include the weather report for many destinations, exchange rates, and information concerning customs, inoculations and visa requirements.
B. Emergency Information will be provided via telephone by a TEA-Designated Physician or Assistance Coordinator on the TEA Staff, when the Card member is unable to get assistance locally. Information will include the names, local address and local telephone numbers of the nearest Medical Service Provider, such as Hospitals and Clinics; Attorneys; or other providers of emergency services such as the U.S. consulates or embassies, or American Express Travel Service Locations** as appropriate and as dictated by the resources available in each country or location. Wherever possible, such information will be provided on two or more emergency services providers. No guarantee is made as to the quality of the emergency service provided, and the final selection of the provider, and any risk, shall be the sole responsibility of the Card member.
C. Medical Transport and Evacuation will be provided, at no cost, to the covered Card member or Family Member, to another, more appropriate Medical Facility, when the covered Card member or Family Member is under the care of a local Medical Service Provider or Facility, and when the TEA-Designated Physician, in consultation with the local Medical Service Provider or Facility determines that such transport is medically necessary and advisable due to inadequacy of local facilities. Card members will be evacuated to the closest adequate Medical Facility as determined by American Express. Eligibility for Medical Transport is contingent upon the covered Card member or Family Member not (1) traveling against physician’s advice, or (2) traveling with a pre-existing sickness, illness or injury***, or (3) traveling to seek medical treatment. Decisions made by the TEA-Designated Physician and the local Medical Service Provider as to (1) the medical need for evacuation, transportation and/or repatriation services, (2) the means and/or timing of any transportation, medical equipment and supplies and medical personnel to be used in connection therewith, and (3) the selection of the Card member’s final destination, are medical decisions based on medical factors, and as such, are beyond the control of the TEA Program and shall be conclusive in determining the need for such services. Very Important: Any risks and costs for Medical Transport not authorized and arranged through the TEA Program are solely the responsibility of the Card member and such costs will not be reimbursed. TEA does not cover medical expenses (with the exception of costs incurred during the transport) nor transportation of personal possessions including luggage.
D. Medical Assessment, Coordination and Monitoring of Treatment of the covered Card member or Family Member will continue, by all reasonable means, where medically advisable, until the Card member or Family Member is released from treatment or is sent home. These steps will include an initial follow up by the TEA-Designated Physician with the local Medical Service Provider or Facility to discuss the preliminary diagnosis and evaluate the recommended treatment, and a contact by the TEA-Designated Physician or Coordinator with the local Medical Service Provider or Facility, and/or the Card member, as frequently as every other day throughout the hospital treatment period to monitor the Card member’s or Family Member’s progress for the purpose of determining the adequacy and necessity of the treatment being provided.
E. Minimize the Card member’s Financial Inconvenience in an Emergency as follows:
1. When the Card member has indicated to the TEA Administrative Coordinator that he/she has health insurance that would cover the services in question, the Administrative Coordinator on Staff will first ask the local Medical Service Provider or Facility to bill the Card member’s insurance company and, if the local medical Service Provider or Facility is unwilling to do that, ask them to bill the Card member directly, rather than requiring the Card member to pay on site.
2. When a local Medical Service Provider or Facility refuses to provide needed medical services to a covered Card member or Family Member without being guaranteed an advance payment for such services, the TEA Program will, with the Card member’s authorization, endeavor to obtain such payment from the Card member’s family or other individuals indicated by the Card member, or with the authorization of the Card member, will guarantee such payment and, if necessary, advance such payment up to a limit of U.S. $5,000 and charge the Card member’s Account for the payment amount, subject to charge authorization by American Express.
3. If necessary, the TEA Program will endeavor to secure and properly post bail bonds, where available, the bonding cost to be born by the Card member.
F. Other Emergency Transportation Services will be provided to covered Card members in a medical emergency.
1. If a Card member is traveling alone or with a child 16 years old or younger, or if a traveling companion who is not a Family Member has been required to leave the Card member, the TEA Program will arrange and pay for round-trip, economy-class transportation for a member of the Card member’s family to travel to the place of treatment, if it is reasonably anticipated that the covered Card member will be hospitalized for 10 consecutive days or more. The TEA Program will not be responsible for the cost of the Family member’s meals or accommodations.
2. If the children covered under the TEA Program, who are 16 years old or younger, are left unattended at the time of the Card members’ injury or sickness, the TEA Program will arrange and pay for one-way, economy-class transportation to return them to their principal residence. (Any additional costs are the responsibility of the Card member.) Should it be necessary for an attendant to accompany the children, the TEA Program will make arrangements for a qualified escort to accompany the children at no cost to the Card member.
3. If a decision is made to evacuate a card member to another Medical Service Facility, the TEA Program will arrange and pay for one-way, economy-class transportation for one other covered Family member traveling with the Card member to the Card member’s principal residence, provided that the other family member’s ticket has become invalid as a result of the Card member’s illness or injury.
G. Emergency Message Transmission will be made through the best efforts of the TEA Program on behalf of and at the request of the sick or injured Card member to the Card member’s immediate family, next of kin, and a reasonable number of business associates.
H. Help in Coordinating the Replacement of Identification Information and Other Documentation, such as passports and visas, will be provided through the best efforts of the TEA Program, if these documents have been lost or stolen.
I. In case of Death of a covered Card member or Family Member while traveling, the TEA Program will provide the necessary administrative services to effect the transportation of the mortal remains of the covered individual back to the Card member’s principle place of residence or place of burial, whichever is closer, and will pay all administrative and transportation expenses, and, subject to TEA’s approval, the cost of a coffin or other encasement of the remains suitable for travel.

Important Instructions:
¨ Always have your Account number ready when calling TEA.
¨ Please note that the TEA must arrange all medical and covered Family Member’s transportation. TEA will not reimburse you for expenses you incur on your own.
¨ Whenever possible, call collect from overseas. In some countries, long distance calls may require operator assistance, and collect calls may not be possible in some countries.
¨ When dialing direct, give a phone number and exact location (hotel, city, street, etc.) where you can be reached.

** Travel Service Locations of American Express Travel Related Services Company, Inc., its affiliates and representatives worldwide.
*** A pr-existing sickness, illness, or injury is any medical condition that has manifested itself, become acute, or was being treated in the 0-day period immediately prior to the start of a trip.

P.S.
Med jet "sounds" good .. but just sort of reading their "fine" print they mention :
Quote
... Due to the limited medical facilities and testing available on cruise ships, in some cases the MEDJET ASSISTANCE Medical Director may require the member to be admitted to a hospital on-shore before scheduling air medical transportation to another hospital... so it sounds like that would be a timely thing (deciding if they send you someplace you want to go or keep you in some hospital wherever you
are.)..
and they won't cover you on a LONG cruise either ( there is a bit about their coverage is 90 days max for a cruise.. so if you are doing a 120 day say world cruise (oh you lucky ones who have that much time) , it wouldn't be a good thing..

The NY resident comment. That does not apply to the Medical benefits section. I just printed that portion only - it was originally pages of other information. I need to take that out. I cannot remember what that applied to and dont have all the rest of it now but something insignificant.

Claudia with medjet they may be thinking that the person should be stablized before a long flight. It may be to protect themselves if someone should die on the way that should have had better diagnosis in a proper hospital rather than just on a cruise ship.

Another factor to consider is whether your regular health insurance plan already covers medical evacuation. Some employee medical plans include it. Mine does, so I've never bothered buying additional medical evacuation insurance. In some cases, the insurance you purchase would be "secondary" so they would expect your medical insurance to pay first anyway. Tom.

I'm revisiting this question of just what AmEx does for you if you're a Platinum card holder (not talking about Shipboard credit). Ngaire's posting gives sooooooo much information but I'm still unclear if AmEx does anything other than coordinate?

Marcie, have been on 25 flights in the last three months, all on Delta, AMX-P with boarding pass gets me in the Crown room for each fligt...relaxing place to unwind before your flight (esp after TSA que)...all drinks (alcohol) and light snacks provided, business center, quiet areas to power up laptops, complimentary newspapers...well you get the picture...figure each visit is worth atleast $10-15 (one to two drinks) thus a dozen visits for me equates to about $180...r/wes

Thanks Wes. We tend to fly AA and unfortunately AmEx doesn't partner with them.

I'm mostly interested in finding out if we have something additional with regards to health care in the event of an overseas emergency. We never use this card but we've had it for several years just to get the shipboard credit.

Wes, you going to be in ATL or DCA CRC any upcoming Monday am or Thursday evening?? I make my weekly run and couldn't live without the Crown Room.

Marcie, I don't think card by itself gives you any medical benefits. Here's the page with all Amex Platinum benefits.
