Today's weather didn't really cooperate, but we all had a good time anyway. It poured rain while we were having lunch, and rained out most of our penguin encounter.

I am sitting here in the computer room with Suzie, Peggy and Andi while all the other hotel guests wait rather impatiently for the computers. We lost internet access for a while, but obviously are up again. I guess it's a race to see which of us gets the earlier time on our post.

Tomorrow we get on the train, no internet there.

Suzie says to she thought she was a wild and crazy gal until she met with these ROAR folks and that today we finally had crappy weather. Pam, Peggy, Suzie and I are hanging out in the computer room escaping the rain.

Peggy finally got her bag today. It went from Zurich to Frankfort instead of to Capetown.

We went to the Cape today and it was lots of fun, but it started to rain during lunch. We presented Ngaire with a poem and gift at lunch. Ngaire, without knowing it selected her own gift. I asked her which perfume bottles she liked and she selected two, saying that I really should not select what she likes. Thank goodness she did this, because my taste isn't the same as hers.

Peggy here...HI!!

We were kind of rained out at the Penguin place. We all got soaked taking pictures of them, but didn't spend as long doing the walk because of the pouring rain.

We are packing up tonight and will leave at 9:30am for an 11am ROVOS experience. TA TA for now.

We won't be posting after tomorrow for awhile. No internet on ROVOS and only one computer at Singita. So get your fix of us now. We realize you will be in withdrawal for awhile.

Hi everyone! A great day even though wet and windy. Didn't get to see as much of the penguins as I would have liked...I guess that means I'll have to come back one of these days!

Rumor is another fine meal at one.waterfront is being coordinated for tonight. Ah, I'm sure the Cape Grace staff loves the tables of 30.

As mentioned before, we're off to Rovos Rail tomorrow, Singita on Monday. I think we'll have to set a time limit on the computer at the lodge.

After our wet day, six of us (Mary Ellen, Jim, Linda, Ron, Gary and me) ventured out to try a new restaurant, Forty Ate, on the recommendation of the concierge. It was one of the finest and most memorable meals any of us have had. They are still training staff so the service needs a bit more polish; but I would go back to this place in a heartbeat. Springbok was on the menu; better than venison for those who enjoy game. I'm not a big dessert eater but these were among the best I've ever had.

The fun began when the Serge (a presence in the dining room best described as larger than life) described the restaurant's concept. It was food participation.

The amuse bouche included a carmelized shaving of truffle where Serge exhorted us to fondle and suck it for full flavor (I kid you not). This was followed by the "Tomato Five Ways" starter. The presentation was modeled loosely after the chemistry sets we got as kids. Portions arrived in beakers, tall shot glasses and one tomato with a cumcumber-covered syringe. The participation element here was the diner would gently re-inflate an oven-dried tomato with an emulsion resembling gazpacho. Serge would only describe 3 of the 5 ways the tomato would be presented; we'd have to be surprised by the other two. We could not stop laughing once the tomato course arrived. Serge was no where near as amused as we were.

We rescued ourselves when we asked if he was acquainted with the chef at El Bulli (reportedly the toughest table to book in Spain). Bingo! Serge warmed up to us and even posed for a picture. It was most unfortunate Suzanne was not along for this adventure with Serge.

We returned around 10:30 to a very quiet lounge. Most were packing to prepare for our next adventure, Rovos Rail. We leave in a few hours.

The hotel is simply marvelous and has worked well for the group.

Cheers, Anne

Anne - I was about to say that the food at Forty Ate reminds me of the presentations that I've heard about at El Bulli. :D How funny! What a fantastic experience.

Love the new photos - that hippo is so cute!

I thought that Gary did such an extrordinary job yesterday with Ngaire's "ditty" that it deservered to be published here.....

(Note this is too the tune of "In Heaven there is no Beer")

To Ngaire with Love (or alternatively "The Patient Kiwi"

To South Africa we came with ROAR
To experience the local folklore
As travelers we're all hard core
But very few of us have been here before

On the cable car we did roar
As Table Top called us to explore
To wine country we went to pour
Good wine for our connissours

Next we board the Rovos Rail
On our way to Safari Trails
Then Victoria Falls prevails
As the African Queen sets sail

We'll remember this forever more
As we travel from shore to shore
We found something at a local store
To say thanks for such a lovely tour

One big round of aplause for our Gary!!!!!!!

The next best thing to being with you ROAR'ers is reading your reports and seeing your pictures! I'm in "withdrawal" on the days you are unable to post here. Not only are you on a fabulous journey but sounds like you are making life long friends (if you weren't already lifelong friends). Oh, I am so green!

We are at Singita!!!!!!! wave wave wave wave Rovos rail was terrific. Light here is kind of poor, excuse the typing. First game drive this afternoon After it got dark they found the lions, several females, one large male and lots of cubs. sat and watched them quite a while. at one point they turned off all the lights and it was pitch black and they were roaring all around us, litterally maybe 3-4 feet away. AMAZING. We saw elephant, rhinos, impalas, water buffalo, owls, hares, etc... and this was the first game drive. The villas, and that IS what they are, are incredible. Glass walls overlooking the river on one entire wall, bathtub, vanity area, bed, and living and dining area all glass..... simply beautiful.

Rovos was terrific too. They think of everything, blankets on the beds to curl up and take a nap, heated beds and floors, even a condum in the vanity kit!!!!!!!

I am really beginning to like this princess lifestyle!! :D :D

The conection here is dial up so very slow. Off to dinner now will post more later

So great to hear from you Arlene; thanks so much! Were you a bit nervous on the first game drive? The audio/visual of lions 4 ft. away is a bit unnerving (to me!)
