Anyone know anything about residential generators?

We bought a 15 KW Generac generator for our house in the event of loss of power. We only desire to run small portions of the house at any one time, but the electrician (who I feel is an idiot) thinks it cannot be doen without getting a larger unit. (Think tons more money)

I have talked to some who say it should be no problem, but I am unsure. Any help? Anyone?

Maybe I should take up electrical engineering as a hobby!

Anthony,

DH is an EE, says 15KW is an overkill, depending on size of your home and what you operate. Is Generac the automatic type?

I wonder how much power it take to run a central AC for an 1800 sq. ft. house?

We don't have hurricanes here, but lightning can cause long power outages, when it's really really hot. I have to go find motel in town where they have power. I've always thought about getting a generator, but it would have to have a lot of juice to run the AC. There is no natural gas here so I would have to get a propane tank which is why I have never done it.

Generac is the name brand. The generator is very nice with an automatic switch that allows it to operate within 10 seconds after power loss.

Our home is somewhat zoned with the AC and we have 2 units down. We only want to run each AC independently, not at the same time with the refrigerator. Maybe some lights at night. The nighttime AC unit is smaller than the daytime so I know we can combine more things with it.

Just not sure if the generator will allow such selectivity.

Editing to add that I meet with the bozo today in hopes of figuring this out. I get the feeling he has not wired many of these before.

Anthony. This bozo comment concerns me. I'm not a electrician, but I would think you would have to hook the generator to each circuit that you want to use in a power failure. This is rocket science, I had my whole house put on a surge protector and the first guy I hired messed everything up and I had to have it redone by somebody that knew what they were doing.

You really need an expert as using the AC changes the picture radically.
