Did any of you watch the PBS Memorial Day Concert from DC tonight? It's always very emotional for me but tonight's has totally "undone" me!!

Kathy, The concert was spectacular, extraordinarily touching--specially as they
continuously focused on the severely injured disabled veteran, SSG Jose Pegueno and his family in the front row. As the executive producer of the concert said, "SSG Pequeno provides a window into the complex world of the disabled warriors who have become our living memorials, a visible reminder of those who sacrificed so much for the principles we stand for."

Ida, as a Gulf War Combat Vet was moved to tears for the last hour of the concert.

Co-hosts Joe Mantegna and Gary Sinise and previous hosts Ossie Davis and E.G. Marshall all had personal connections to veterans’ causes and to supporting troops in active service and Ossie Davis served in WWII from 1942–1945.

At the end, the Armed forces medley was perfect
musical cap to a wonderfully spiritual evening
of music dedicated to our Veterans.

A few Memorial Day facts

*Where was the first Memorial Day observed? It depends on whom you ask. Approximately 25 towns have been linked to its origins, including Macon, Ga.; Richmond, Va; and Boalsburg, Pa. In 1966, congress and President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo N.Y. as the birthplace of the holiday.

*Congress established Memorial Day as a national holiday in 1971 and set it for the last Monday in May. The observance was originally called Decoration Day, a name still used by some.

*A Gallup poll conducted in 2000 showed that only 28 percent of Americans knew the meaning of Memorial Day. Children touring the nation's capital once told officials that they knew Memorial Day as "the day the pool opens."

*In 2000, Congress set 3p.m. on Memorial Day as a National Moment of Remembrance, Americans are asked to pause for one minute at that time in an act of national unity to honor those who died fighting for our freedom.

Couldn't watch the Memorial Day concert. I turned it on for a couple of minutes and just started crying, probably partially as my oldest son is at 29 Palms now preparing to go to Iraq. It looked really great though. (If I had been home alone, I would have watched it anyway, but my husband gets upset if he sees me crying.)
