It was a beautiful day, bright sunshine, temperature in the 70’s, and a perfect day for the beach. So I headed out, camera & briefcase in hand, and took the short drive to Jones Beach. After a great walk, and getting some interesting photos, I returned to my car to get my briefcase thinking I would sit on a bench & get some work done. But first – lunch.
I stopped into one of the boardwalk restaurants (Friendly’s has the franchise now for food on the Boardwalk – UGH Something just not right about a Friendly’s at Jones Beach). I know it’s not the healthiest thing in the world, but heck, I was at the beach, and the beach is a place to have a hot dog. So I ordered my dog, slathered it with mustard & then headed outside. I was holding the hot dog in one of those little paper plates shaped like a bun, balancing it on my palm along with a container of catsup for the fries I ordered.
I had not taken more than a few steps when a seagull swooped down and GRABBED MY HOT DOG! He came down, got his beak onto that dog without even touching the bun – a perfect heist! It was like a surgeon using tweezers. He flew away, straight to the sand, holding that dog right at its center – a few inches of hot dog hanging out of each side of his mouth. He was quickly joined by about a dozen other gulls, no doubt fighting over MY HOT DOG. I was dumbfounded! I could not believe what I just witnessed. THE GULL STOLE MY HOT DOG!!!!! With the precision of a skilled surgeon. I looked around to see if anyone saw this happen, thinking to myself “No – that didn’t REALLY happen, did it?†It looked like no one saw it. I just stood there, looking at my empty bun.
Do I go back into the restaurant & show them my empty bun & ask for a replacement? Not a chance! I don’t think anyone would believe me – and I’d be too embarrassed anyway. (“Excuse me, a Seagull stole my hot dog. Can I get a replacement?†The kids working there would be hysterical)
WHY ME? I saw someone a little while later walk out with 4 hot dogs on a tray, and no birds stole their dogs. Others were eating hot dogs, hamburgers, popcorn, fries – they were not robbed of their food. Gulls were all around, but they were stealing only MY food. They took a Wiener from a Weiner!!!!
I looked around the boardwalk to see if the bird dropped the dog – I saw no sign of that hot dog anywhere. I looked down at the area in the sand where the gulls gathered to feast on my dog. No sign there either. They probably ate the darned thing. Even with all the mustard. I sure hope there are some seagulls out there tonight with a bad case of heartburn from all that mustard.
A Bad day at Sea is better than a Good day on Land!

Gil,
I was all set to feel really sorry for you. As I read, I was thinking that your lost your camera, your briefcase, or your wallet, maybe.
But, hey, I hang out on the Weight Loss Support Thread. No Sympathy. Glad YOU are okay.

My question is how is it that Gil always seems to be left holding the bun?

ROFLMAO. I, too, was all set to hear about your briefcase or camera or wallet being stolen and to commiserate with you.

Sounds like a remake of an early scene in Hitchcock's movie "The Birds"
We've got sea gulls (sea bullies would be a better name for them) aplenty. I have had them try to swoop in on my food, too, right in my own back yard. Did you get another hot dog?
Cheers, Anne

I wish someone had a camera there. THe look that I must have had on my face would have been something to see!
No - I did not get a new hot dog. I think someone was looking out for me - They knew I shouldn't eat that hot dog. HAving lost 45 lbs, I guess my guardian angel saw my eating this as a step on the road back, and sent the birds to swoop down & save me from myself.

At least the bird didn't decide to "drop" something else on you while he was at it!

Good one Bonnie...or how about expanding on your title...
Gull Gets Gil's Weiner.
I called Gil apparently right after it happened, and I was driving home from teaching. I was laughing so hard I was seriously considering pulling over to compose myself.

Gil: I get the feeling best to have Arlene with you most of the time (Arlene I am always on the female's side) the joke here is don't divorce your wife if she knows Joanna - Joanna will point her to best attorney, teach her tricks of the trade, make male's life miserable especially if young chickie involved, and be there while locks on doors are being changed - of course I will for my girlfriends - I did help to let air out of tires of a bad boy's car parked in front of swinging bar but that was 35 yrs ago -

Gil..... Gul ???
Only one letter apart! Part of a plan? I leave that to you all, BUT had there been onions on that dog, we would not have had a story!
Doug
PS: Joanna, rumor has it that it was a girl gul that got Gil's grub, since they appear to be the brighter sex in the gul world. I would hope that you will side with Gil over the gul until someone is proven gul-ty. Of course, I have no idea about lawyers in the gul world. (lol)
