Amazon has a great deal on the Panasonic DMC-LX5 today only. $269 for a camera that's probably one of the better point and shoot cameras out there. It compares favorably to the canon S95 that many of our photo takers already have. :woh:

It was a one day only Gold Box deal. Maybe Amazon will run it again sometime.

It arrived Saturday. I love it! It's a bit bigger than the S95 but I find it easier to hold on to. Takes great photos in low light and is easy to use (although it may be easier for me since I have two other Panasonic cameras)

Col Wes, thanks for your recommendation and Lauri, so happy you love your new camera. I'm afraid this Claus family recently blew their wad and a new camera isn't on the list.

If all you are doing is pointing and shooting both of those cameras are way overkill. If you use a camera on automatic to get photos of people - the Powershot 1400 is probably fine. The S95 is good if you want to learn a little more

ChatKat, you are probably right. I joined other enthusiasts of the S95 and bought one ($$ for a point and shoot) before a cruise, not knowing a thing about it other than good low light, and I was amazed at what I got in the theater one night with no flash when it was not allowed there. (The Platters!) And I still want to learn more about this camera. I read so much on "boards" what it is capable of for one not wanting an SLR.
And now I am hearing about this new little Nikon that has pocket quality with a huge zoom.....I am just the sucker they are looking for? Can you tell me what you have heard about this one?

Zoom only magnifies what the chip is recording.
I am not a Nikonian. Canon has better optics and in the pocket variety is highly regarded. If you have the S95 - you don't need anything else. It's one of the best compact cameras.

I have the Panasonic LX5 and have enjoyed great results from it. The Canon S95 is much the same but is smaller and easy to carry in a pocket. Both cameras offer very good results. For any subject that moves quickly, birds, kids, sports etc. I like a DSLR but it is heavier and can get very expensive. I have used both Canon and Nikon, currently all my gear is Nikon. They both produce good results. I prefer Nikon lenses to Canon. Just a personal preference. Nikon is very good at keeping the layout of controls across their SLR models very similar. When using 2 bodies with different lenses, something I do when on great adventures, like Antarctica, it is easy to change from body one to the other. I have found that most of todays cameras are all very good. Put yourself in the right place with good light, frame the picture carefully and you will get a good picture. Happy photography!

Not that it matters, but, it is being replaced/discontinued.

Marcie, the S100 is the updated S95.
Doris, I have the previous version of the S100, the S95 and I love it. It's a fantastic camera and I use it fairly often in place of my larger SLR. It's easy to use if just want it for a point & shoot but it also has advanced options such as being able to choose the aperture. Best of all you can shoot in RAW.

Thanks Andrea...this S100 has a huge price tag.
I clicked on link above for S95, the gold box was there 20 minutes ago and now it's gone! I seem to be a day late on these good deals. I do love Amazon Prime so will just be patient.

Just a reminder - and a plug. Should you ever want to buy anything from Amazon, Please go through the link we have at Http://www.shelterdoggies.com. Your price (& your Gold Box deals) won't change, but we will get a small commission to help animal shelters
Thanks, Doug

The PBS station in Houston also offers this function. I like that Amazon supports these type of enterprises.

You are right, Betty. Many places use the Amazon link as a way to raise money. The key is that the buyer MUST go to Amazon by way of the link. It is so easy to forget to do that! I can only hope that anyone reading this will want to help Animal shelters and go to Amazon by way of our link at: http://www.shelterdoggies.com Your local PBS station is just as deserving. See you soon! Doug
