Tonight, I went over to the Chili's here in Huntsville for dinner. I sit down, waiter stops by and asks what I would like to drink. I say
Quote
scotch on the rocks.
A minute later he is at that little contraption where they enters orders and calls out to me

Quote
Can I get you something else?
I, not understanding the reason for the question, just reply

Quote
yes, I will be ordering dinner.
He goes on to say

Quote
we don't have scotch.
Me, in disbelief, and also aware that I had scotch there before, said

Quote
yes you do.
After a bit of consternation and multiple trips to consult with others, he brings me a scotch.

All through dinner I was wondering about this exchange. I saw this big sign that said

Quote
Happy Day All Day Long
Wells $3.50
So, I felt that all had worked out fine.

Then, comes the check. $7.25 for a JB! Ouch!!! I called back the waiter and pointed to the sign. He again went to consult. Then a manager type came out saying that

Quote
In Alabama, they can't take liquor off a bill.
I point out to her

Quote
I don't want it taken off my bill, just charge me the right amount.
Her response:

Quote
We don't have a well scotch.
Now, for the second time during this dinner, I am incredulous. I say to her

Quote
Either you are paying for this or the waiter is paying for this.
She didn't get my drift (something about police) so I had to further explain that if management didn't make an adjustment, the waiter was getting stiffed....she didn't care.

Waiter presents bill, and I apologize for him having to pay for management's error. I wrote on receipt $0 for tip and wrote a note saying

Quote
Tip was zeroed out as I was overcharged for drink.
Someone in office should get the note and hopefully bring to General Manager's attention.

Thats my strange story.

Marc

PS I left a sizable tip for the waiter under a glass....no reason he should have to pay for management's transgressions. ;)

Marc - that is truly incredible. And it's not even a full moon tonight.

Did you use a platinum card? Ask them to take it off the bill. What a story...

One more reason no one here wants to get in the franchise restaurant business, be forced to hire managers like that who can only go by the book, and don't care about their employees, only corporate!

Marc, I HOPE, but doubt anyone will notice your comment. Late night bean counters just want to do their shift and go home! Note to franchise owner might work a bit better. At least you got your scotch!

Its amazing sometimes how uncommon
"common" sense has become. Your situation is similar to one we (89 yr old mother, 59 yr old brother & I, 52) encountered about a year ago. New waitress at TGIF carded us. Absolutely would not serve us drinks unless we produced proof of age because she had been told to be sure to verify that all patrons ordering alcohol were of legal drinking age.

Vickie,

My daughter worked at TGIF's for some time and it was mandatory that they card everyone, regardless of how obvious it was that the person was over 21.

Olivia hit the nail on the head - it's all about going by the corp. book of management, policies and procedures. Regardless of how dumb those procedures may be, employees are expected to go by the rules.

it all reminds me of the diner scene in the movie, five easy pieces, where jack nichelson's character tries to order a tuna sandwich.
