I know some of you folks have stayed here (Tom?) Someone posted on CC a review from NY Times that said dress code here is no shorts or sandals. Does anyone know if that is actually enforced? we are travelling with a couple from So Fl and they just dont "do" no shorts or sandals, at least not during the day. Should we re-book or is this just a stated policy that no one actually cares about?

We've stayed at the Oriental. The "no shorts/sandals" policy probably only would be applied in the evening, if at all; I doubt the no sandals policy would be applicable any time. I really can't imagine them making an issue of anything, the service is terrific.We loved the Oriental; I'd stay there again anytime.

Claudia: Don't know what category hotel you are interested in but in Singapore I've stayed at the Swissotel which is adjacent to the new Raffles (more expensive) and opens up into an air conditioned shopping centre. What more could a girl want? Lee

Claudia - I've only been to Singapore for a day - disembarked in the morning, did a tour, took an evening flight - did not stay or check out any hotels.

I just saw this thread otherwise I would have answered earlier. I stayed at the Oriental in August. I don't remember a no shorts/no sandals policy. In fact, the hotel was less formal than I expected, far less formal than the Four Seasons where President Bush stayed.
I wouldn't worry about a dress code. The Oriental is known for its service and you'll have a great time.
As for Singapore, there are a number of great hotles there. I only stayed at the Shangri La and I thought it was fabulous. Its food buffet was by far the best and most extensive I have ever seen. There's also a Raffles Hotel that is highly rated. Tom.

Have stayed at the Oriental several times - service is exceptional - the dress code did not seem very rigid - not like the Ritz in Madrid which required (several years ago) a coat and tie to walk through the lobby! Have overnighted a number of times in Singapore (love to fly on Singapore Airlines) and stay at Raffles - it is a sightseeing stop, so lobby is always crowded, but a great place to stay.
