For Athens you actually dock at Pireus, which is a pretty good clip from downtown Athens, as I remember. Cabs are readily available at the terminal as long as you don't have a ship loading and unloading, but I imagine it's fairly expensive to get to downtown. I'd check with the concierge desk once you get aboard and see if you can't hitch a ride to downtown with an RSSC group.

I used the Grande Bretagne preferred transportation company, they had picked me up from the airport for 55 Euro, was very satisfied and they even sent a small Mercedes too, and they billed it right to the room..

In Aug of last year, I think we paid about 30 Euros for a cab from pier to the city (up the hill from the Grande Bertagne).

Joanna, you always know what to do. I have only driven past the Bretagne, but after its renovation, it seems to have been restored to its former glory according to others. Hope you like it!

Joanna~ We used the hotel's car service from the airport to the GB. I wrote a bit about the (very positive)experience way back in the hotel section of LCT. :app:

Ok, I give up. Cannot find my post about the taxi service for you Joanna...but bottom line is we hired a taxi from the Grande Bretagne. Guy with sign was waiting for us at baggage. Athens was experiencing a taxi strike (what a surprise! ) so our car/driver particularly important to us! Once we got to Syntagma Square, a demonstration (another surprise! ) blocked the taxi's approach to the hotel. Driver called the hotel and a bellman met our taxi, a block or two away, with a luggage cart and a smile! So, we were REALLY glad to have had prearranged transportation! :D

Hey, I'm glad you got it covered. Athens (and much of the world!) can be so unpredictable... if we can anticipate some of the stuff..so much the better! Anyway, sorry you didn't find my old post (did some LCT gremlin eat it?!) but our one night stay at the GB was absolutely wonderful...and hope you enjoy it as well!!!

Joanne, You might want to check out this link, George, the famous taxi driver of Greece . He charges 35 euros fro the transfer from Pireaus to the Grande Bretagne. We will be using him on our upcoming October 16-October 30 Monte Carlo to Athens SilverSea cruise. We will also be staying at the Hotel Grande Bretagne for a couple of days after the cruise. Enjoy your cruise! We are certainly looking forward to ours.
