Next was our visit to the water village, located in the heart of Brunei’s capital city, with views of a major golden domed mosque and the Sultan’s palace. There is a combination of new and old houses, connected by wooden walkways. Resident’s cars are kept in large free parking lots on land and the homes can only be reached by water taxi, stopping at various jetties. Even though the government provides subsided modern housing, many families have chosen to to continue living in the water viallge. The community includes schools, both public and private, fire department, police, mosques, etc. Some are served by utilities, but some still discharge their waste into the water. About 13,000 people currently live there.

We rode a boat around for awhile and then stopped for a snack and tea at one of the homes.
