Here's my dilemma, I booked a cruise several months ago for a Med Oct. 05 sailing date. I did not take out the cruise insurance (I usually wait to do so a month before final payment is due) I opted for the free cruise air, knowing I would change that down the line when it became within an year of sailing and the flight schedules became available. Well, I have found a good priced flight with good connections but its on US Air. Since I made the intitial payment months ago, the financial default clause for the air portion of the trip will not be in effect, since I didn't purchase the insurance within 2 weeks of the initial payment.
Can I take out insurance now on the flight portion and the cruise insurance later or does the whole trip have to be on one policy??

If you are buying your air and your cruise from 2 different vendors why can't you have 2 different policies? It may cost a little more but it might get that air covered. Then with USAir in bankruptcy they may not be covered at all by anyone.

I'll be very interested in the answer to this one, too. We did the very same thing and have yet to purchase insurance.

Karen, if US Air goes under, won't your credit card be your saving grace? I think that's what Ngaire told me.

Pam, I think the credit card covers 2 months after purchase. I am not sure if they would cover it if I buy now and say, they go bankrupt in 6 months.
Colleen, I think I read on one of the trip insurance sites that the entire vacation has to be on on insurance plan....I can't imagine why and maybe my memory is failing me??

Insurance - I wish it could be simple.
Actually Karen has a point because "bankruptcy" is covered with travelex ONLY if the policy is bought within 21 days of deposit. Most of the insurance policies will have this clause I believe. Radisson's carrier Berkely Care does not cover bankruptcy at any time no matter when you buy it.
Credit cards are the normal coverage for bankruptcy anyway not travel insurance companies.
I am not an expert on this subject at all and I am sure that different cards have different policies. I had a cruise to the Galapagos booked for about 8 months. They went bankrupt. We still got our money from the credit card company because we had not had the "product" yet so the 2 month rule did not apply. Airline tickets could be the same thing.
Also dont some of the other airlines honor certain tickets - PETER he is the one to answer this question. Air is not my bag.
You must insure everything you get from Radisson for instance but if you buy the air elsewhere you do not have to insure that at all. You can chose to insure or not. If you buy the air from Radisson then you must insure it.
With that in mind you may be able to insure your air elsewhere without the cruise portion I am just not sure if the "whole" vacation must be with one carrier. That has never come up before.
I believe there are lots of loopholes when you are looking at a company that everyone clearly knows is heading to bankruptcy. I just dont know all the details here at all. Kind of out of my realm of expertise I am not better qualified here than anyone else.

I just spoke with my credit card service department. There is no time limit before the flight date to file a dispute if US Air goes bankrupt. I can purchase the ticket as far in advance as I wish with no worries. The 2 months time limit comes into effect starting when the airline goes bankrupt. So, if US air goes into finacial default in say, August, I would have until October to dispute, which of course I would of already have done, the first minute I heard the news! :)
