We loved going for lunch( not open for dinner) to one of the covered produce markets Ostermalms Saluhall. I remember there were more than one cafes/ restaurants within the market. I think we had lunch at Lisa Elmquist. Delicious salmon. The market was beautiful, all that fish and fresh produce.

For dinner we went to a great restaurant( a bit pricey ) in Gamla Stan. I remember we went down into a cellar like restaurant, very cozy. I can't remember the name. I'll try to find my credit card records.

Another more casual place we went for dinner was Bakfickan, behind the ultra expensive Operakallaren with which it supposedly shares the kitchen. We liked it a lot.

Denise, Forgot what was the name of the restaurant, but there is a fish restaurant that I think was called the Fishmarkt. It had a fish soup that was wonderful. Local dishes are crayfish, fish, reindeer and, of course, cloudberrries!!

I am not sure, but, my dear friends went to a place something like, The Butcher, the Banker, the Theif and his wife. They are really into good food and ambiance. They went last summer and are still talking about it. Someone here will know the place.

Which Radisson hotel are you talking about? I think there are 3 Radisson SAS hotels in Stockholm and we will be staying at the SAS Strand.

All the Radisson hotels in Stockholm are lovely. They do cater to a Japanese clientele. Menus are often in Japanese and they offer a Japanese breakfast.

In fact, Radisson hotels in Europe are top drawer; Europeans are all unpleasantly surprised at Radissons in the US.

We are foodies, as well, Ginny.

Actually, we are looking for dining recommendations that are geared towards where the locals dine, rather than the high-end, over-priced, tourist-geared restaurants. We found our dining experiences in Istanbul to be superb, when we had our lunches where the locals ate. The locals know where the great food is.

I am not sure - it was the one that RSSC used for the post-cruise. It was by the train station and was what I would call downtown. I have a busy day today, but will look at my "stuff" by this weekend.

I cannot recommend Wedholm's Fisk highly enough. It is a fish restaurant of amazing quality. It ain't cheap, but then very little food in Stockholm is.

As far as the raindeer goes.... I had it. Not a favorite. It was interesting.. perhaps a wee bit gamey as if vension were crossed with beef. But the damn red blinking from my plate drove me nutz.

Ginny - this is where I stayed in Stockholm.

Radisson SAS Royal Viking Hotel is located in the very heart of Stockholm, next to the Central Station, the World Trade Center, and close to all tourist attractions and entertainment destinations.

I absolutely agree that a good place for lunch is Suluhall, particulary Lisa Elmquist. It is also fun to see all the wonderful food treats available at the various stalls at Saluhall. For dinner, I love Fem Sma Hus or Den Glydene Freden, both in the old town (Gamla Stan)and both historic restaurants. They are not at all just tourist joints; on the half dozen or so times I have been to each of them, most of the clientele was Swedish. Both have delightful small rooms with charming stone walls and antique decorations. And both are very good about introducing you to the various flavors of schnapps (acquavit). For smorgasbord, the Grand Veranda at the Grand Hotel is excellent. It offers a magnificent selection of Swedish delights, with the added bonus of fabulous views across the harbour to the Royal Palace. By the way, if you're staying at the Royal Viking, try to get very high up rooms, since the lower ones look directly out onto a six-lane highway, just a few feet away. Cheers, Fred

The correct way to say "oy" when in Sweden is: Oy.
Please try to do it with a Yiddish accent otherwise you may look foolish. Or worse, you might be confused with someone trying to order a crawfish to drive him home because he might have had too much to drink and didn't want to risk the harsh DWI laws of Sweden.
Of couse, I 'might' be wrong here. I have an old book.

Denise - Both Fem Sma Hus and Den Glydene Freden are on a major (although narrow) street in Gamla Stan at the part of Gamla Stan nearest to your hotel. The concierge at your hotel can certainly tell you how to walk there - not a long walk. Both restaurants have large wrought-iron signs outside of their buildings. They are on the same street, even though they appear to have different street addresses. That is because the entrace to Fem Sma Hus is on the side street (a few steps off the main street) and the entrance to Den Glydene Freden is on the main street. You will have a memorable meal at either of them. Cheers, Fred

Has anyone tried the restaurant Leijontornet, located in a cellar beneath the Victory Hotelin Gamla Stan and a Relais and Chateaux member? Food is described as Swedish, with Meditterranen influences.


The following is the Frommer's blurb:

"This is one of the Old Town's most stylish and fashionable restaurants, noted for its fine food and the quality of its service. From the small, street-level bar where you can order a before-dinner drink, patrons descend into the intimately lit cellar (the restaurant was built around a medieval defense tower). To reach this restaurant, you need to negotiate a labyrinth of brick passageways through the Victory Hotel.

You might begin with grilled, marinated calamari with eggplant and paprika cream, or a salad with roast deer and curry dressing, or perhaps a potato crepe with bleak roe vinaigrette and fried herring. Thumbs up to Fen Sma Hus (5 little houses)! The concierge at the Hilton Slussen recommended it for our first night in Stockholm. Easy walking distance and good food. Met some fellow Baltics Voyager voyagers in the cellars. Afterwards, we walked through the old city. I think it is a good choice.
