I'm a mum of a 35 year old son who works in New York. As I only see him once a year, our time together is extremely precious. We are planning to take a cruise on Navigator to New England next September. Is the vibration evryone talks about a worry? This will be our first cruise ever (and at my age, probably my last) so want to make sure we are making the right choice. We get on extremely well together, but I was wondering whether he will feel comfortable. He definitely doesn't want to bother with a dinner suit.

It's a lovely cruise and you will have much to do or as little to do as you like. Your son will still need a sports jacket and perhaps a suit for a few of the evenings if you want to eat in the main dining room. It is not all casual. If he is used to fine dining in NYC, then a coat is the norm for the better restaurants. The Navigator vibration is mostly in the Show Lounge and in the open seas. On this cruise there was almost no vibration that we felt. Book midship and you will be just fine. We have been on the Navigator twice and had a wonderful time on each cruise.

Thanks so much for your advice - I thought everyone over there would be asleep by now! The cabin mentioned is a bit forward of mid deck on Deck 7 (port side). Although the Aussie dollar is looking a little healthier against yours at the moment (and I hope it stays that way), it still hurts in the translation, so hopefully Deck 7 will be OK. Having never cruised before, I'm not sure what is relevant and what isn't but we'll have a great time!

I stayed in 733 on my cruise to Bermuda - it's a perfect place to be.

Welcome Lee! That location should be near perfect on the Navigator. Just have your son bring along a dark suit and he'll be fine for all the dinners in the main dining room (no difference from dining in NYC in the majority of the fine restaurants, exactly as Kathy said).

On November 10th we disembarked from the Navigator in Tampa, having cruised from Montreal (24 days in three back-to-back segments.) We were just forward of the mid-ship atrium (in 631, a delightful suite with balcony) and had no problems with vibration, although we did feel it in the show lounge and casual restaurant (both aft), quite noticeably one time when the captain was trying to make up time. The aft portion of the ship is where you may notice the vibration, particularly when the ship is moving fast. I don't recall much if any noticeable vibration on that first segment - between Montreal and New York. Unless you are a "princess and the pea" type person, I don't think you'll really be troubled at all on board the ship. The food on the Navigator is arguably the best afloat, the crew super-smooth and attentive while still friendly. Overall: Great ship!
[size=8]Too Many To List - 416 days & counting on Radisson/Regent, and 150+ days on 8 other lines, with one cruise booked next month on the Mariner, Miami to Honolulu 22 days

Thanks to all of you who replied - it was quite exciting reading answers from people I've never met and who live on the other side of the world. This is fun! I've been to the US a couple of times now and just love it - pity it's so far away! To answer a couple of questions asked - the ship is the Navigator, the date of departure from New York is (and you guys always put the dates back the wrong way which confuses me) is 09/07/05 (which would be 9 July here but is 7 September there). The cabin we've now been allocated is 716 but I don't know if they can change that at any time. Although we are lucky enough to have a balcony, it may be too cold to use it. Do you think we may be a little early to see the autumn colours? Can't have it both ways!
My son won't have a problem with the suit - he just didn't want to wear it on holidays if he didn't have to - but it's much better than having to get decked out in a tux. We Aussies are pretty casual.
Thanks once again to all of you. I've been reading lots of your comments elsewhere on the site and have taken them on board (pardon the pun)!

Lee, we're Joanna & Tony's extended family too (guess I'm breaking the news to them :D ). We will be in Sydney 2 days...Feb 6 & 7 on the World Cruise. I'd love suggestions from you as to things to see and do. Maybe it could be possible to meet you?
You sound so interesting...why don't you post on the "introduction" thread all about yourself.
