If I take dollar based travelers checks on a Voyager cruise to Northern Europe will they cash the checks on the ship? Can I get dollars or only the local currency of whatever port we are in that day?
The last few times I took travelers checks to Europe, I had a heck of time finding a place to cash them. Luckily most cities have an American Express Travel Office but if I'm only in port a few hours finding that office could be a challenge.

No need to take travelers checks. Regent will let you put $400 per person per week onto your bill. You can always get dollars and they will usually (not always) have local currency. Unfortunately, their rate for other currencies is terrible. I recommend going to ATMs or even money changers for much better rates.

I am bringing my ATM card but I am very leery of using foreign machines. Where did I just read some horror stories? here? or the other board? I will use my VISA as much as possible but when I'm just picking up a few trinkets somewhere I want cash.
Thanks for the info.

I always have travelers' checks with me, and you can cash them either at the hotel desk or in the casino. I know they are antiquated, but I'm simply not comfortable with using an ATM card in other countries. Call me an old fogey.

I always have used my ATM to get cash in the local currency. I typically only go to ATM's at banks, but has anyone had a problem with bank ATM's in Europe?

Have always relied on ATMs for local currency and never had a problem in Africa, Asia, SA, Australia and Europe. Only problem was in Canada - was not able to find an ATM in Quebec, only money changers - no problem in Montreal. I'm sure that I just didn't look in the right places!

I had the problem with the ATM card. Luckily, I had only a $500 per day limit. Funds have already been put back in my account.
I learned that it is good not having a high daily limit on your ATM card. Even if I have a high limit, I am going to ask that the limit be temporarily lowered while I travel.
With how good exchange rate is for ATMs and earning all the Skymiles adding cash to my shipboard account, I can't see taking travelers checks.

We have always gotten US currency on the ship as Marc said....$400. per person/$800 couple. Why not do this and maybe (like we do) you'll get f.f. miles or some other perk from using your credit card?? We always get the cash even if we don't need it just to get the f.f. miles and then deposit it when we get back home again. For foreign currency we always use ATM machines in the countries, so far no problems ever.

It's easy to find ATM machines all over the world. If you have VISA, for example, go to their web site and click ATM's. Then "countries" and so on. Some credit cards charge a tiny fee and most provide an excellent rate of exchange. Regent is way out in their charges.

Ok if we put the $400 or $800 charge on our Regent account is it a cash advance or a purchase? I'm hoping it shows as a purchase. Then I get a grace period to pay it off but not so with a cash advance. And, yes, I have found a new reward card now that the Goldpoints is useless.

It shows up as a purchase so no finance charges. It actually doesn't get billed to your account until last day of cruise so you may have a very long float.

The longer the cruise, the better the float !! Even on the 4 month WC we didn't get our bill until the end of the cruise. We would never do this if it were considered a cash advance....ouch!!

That float is the least they can do after keeping our deposit money with no interest for a year plus, right?

Where EXACTLY on the ship do you go to charge the $400 to get the cash? The hotel desk? I think it's where they let you sign up for excursions?

Colleen, just ask a person at the Reception Desk for your cash. It is a separate desk for tours. Debbie

I'm reviving this thread so I can get more recent experiences. Can one still get cash at the front desk or at the casino?

As of two weeks ago, my wife and I each got $400 from the Reception Desk. You could also get cash from the casino but there was, I believe, a 5% surcharge.
