But if you are looking for First (or perhaps even Business) class, many (most?) airlines really open up availability in the 2 weeks prior to the flight. I know that Lufthansa does this for First.

Also, Cathay does it - I've personally redeemed American miles for Cathay First within a week of travel. United does it as well.

Swiss (which is owned by Lufthansa) does this as well - for shorter flights (intra-Europe), they usually release award seats 2 months prior to the flight - we recently redeemed United miles for Athens - Zurich.

trying ro snag two business class seats from Clt to JNB next July. Never easy. Having to dump AMX miles into Air Canada. Have done this twice before and just trying to avoid ethiopian or egypt air. Have done that Cairo to JNB flight and it was horrible on Egypt AIr. Old dirty plane with OLD seats.

Pammy,

When we went to SA, we were really impressed with Turkish Air. We switched in Istanbul. It was delightful. We did business and first with them. First was incredible and business was amongst the best we have experienced...equivalent to Cathay.

Thank for the heads up. May have to use IAD for our departure. Many more flights from there than CLT. Going from NYC you had many more options. NC is more limited.
