"Engineering an Empire: China" was on the History Channel last night. The website is History Channel Home Page . It should provide information about re-runs of the program. It's worth watching. Lots of information about the building of the Great Wall and the tomb surrounding the Terra Cotta Warriors. Neither Gary or I remembered hearing much of the information from the guides in China. Cheers, Anne

Thanks for the information! There is also an excellent compilation on travel to Beijing on the CC board posted by an ex-pat: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=444199 Lots of excellent suggestions and info there, including Ngaire's Pearl Market!

I must admit, when I saw Ngaire's comment, I had to investigate. It is truly an amazing post. Tomorrow when I have access to a laser printer, I'll print it off, so that we have a hard copy. (I'll bet there will be several on PANDA.)
Thanks for pointing it out, Mitch.

Umm .. if the foot massage is as intense as the ones in Singapore, I'd advise against it. Check the masseur's knuckles. If they are swollen at the knuckle, steer clear. It took me a good three months before my foot stopped hurting from TOO MUCH pressure. I wouldn't risk it again.

Thought I would let you know the Regent 4 day pre-cruise Tokyo/Kyoto sold out but Regent is getting some extra space so I have a couple of people on the waitlist BUT these will clear.
As popular as this has been if anyone else is thinking of doing this it is probably best to book now so you hit this next wave of space availability. You can always cancel up to 60 days before departure with no penalty anyway.
Just thought I should let people know.

For anyone else who may have made air arrangements with United from ORD-KIX, they have now cancelled that route and are only flying direct via SFO. Knowing United, they will likely make 10 more changes before we leave.

Doris, I think this is the thread you were talking about. It was under Cruise Roll Calls and Acronym before this section for group cruises was set up. http://www.luxurycruisetalk.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=2;t=000251;p=3

This catches me every so often when I am looking for something, and it might help you. Before you click on a specific topic...on the screen, about 1/3 of the way down, on the right side, is a drop box which says "Show Topics From..." and you can select a time frame. Set it to show all topics (or at least set for a longer time frame) and you may find what you are looking for.

I posted by accident this request in the Hong Kong thread. So here it goes again... I am booking my own air, pre & post cruise stays, but needs some advice. I want to be based in my 3 days pre-cruise in a city that is easily accesible for "day trips". Which one will be my best option Osaka or Kyoto? Doris

As posted in the Hong Kong thread, I don't know your itinerary, so don't know which city would be your best choice. I loved Kyoto as there is so much to see and do there. Lee

Lee My "tentative" itinerary for the 3 days pre-cruise will be: half day orientation tour of Osaka, a full day to Kyoto, a full day to Tokyo or a half day to Nara. I have no idea of the distances between places neither what type of transportation to use. I was leaning towards Osaka as my base as that's where the ship departs, but any suggestion will be appreciated. I'll be arriving at the Narita airport so also need to know how to get to my base city as one way flights were quite expensive & saw no direct flights to Osaka. Trains is not a good option as for a 20 days trip there is going to be a lot of luggage. For the Panda cruisers that are arriving early in Japan & are not doing the pre-cruise with Regent which city will you use as the base?

I'm using Osaka as a base. If you're flying into Narita, I'd look into shipping your luggage from Narita airport to your hotel in Osaka - it'll get there the next day and the cost is relatively reasonable. That'll allow you to take a train to Tokyo station and transfer to a bullet train to get to Osaka (trains are easily the best way to get around Japan) - approx 2-3 hours away.
As I commented in your other thread, Osaka-Kyoto are only about 1-2 hours away by train. Nara is also about the same distance away from both cities as well. Both Osaka and Kyoto would make a good base to explore the area from but since you need to transfer to the ship with luggage for embarkation, Osaka makes the most sense from my standpoint.

Masaki, thanks so much for your input. It was very helpful in making the final decision in using Osaka as a base. I didn' know about the "delivery service" at the airport that will definitely use to ship the luggage to my hotel in Osaka. I'm flying from Narita to Itami / Osaka & don't want to carry any luggage in probably a bus that will take us from the airport to the city center. Any recommendation of a 4* Osaka hotel centrally located ? Doris

The Tokyo/Kyoto pre-cruise option RSSC is offering sounds pretty good. I've signed up for it and I think Andrea has as well. After a LONG flight I pretty much like to be lead by the hand for the first day or so.

Yes, I signed up for RSSC's pre-cruise option too. Lauri is right about the long flight, but also since I'll be traveling alone it's just easier to let RSSC take care of all the arrangements.

Has everyone nailed down flights? I just got my award air, but it isn't the best itinerary, plus it is into Narita (Tokyo), rather than Osaka. I searched to get air from Narita to Osaka, and there is just nothing out there! I thought with the 2 cities being so close I would be able to get a good airfare, but instead found nothing either cheap or expensive.
I also need to go look at the pre and post cruise stuff....AND read back over what everyone has said. :)

Sheri - that's one of the reasons I decided to do the precruise too. I was able to use miles to get to Narita, but I think you have to get to the other airport in Tokyo for a domestic flight to Osaka. The train is an option, but I didn't want to figure out how to ship my luggage, get to the train, etc. uber Princess here!

Princess here too then!! I am not really excited about the prospect of figuring out the train etc, especially when I am by myself. Unfortunately, my flight gets into Narita on the night of the 25th, so I don't have time to do a pre cruise unless I move my flight to an earlier day. I am not sure if I will be able to find another award seat though...they are really few and far between! :(
Editing to add (now that I saw your post Arlene), that I will really try to move my flight up.

Arlene, we are arriving in Tokyo on the 23rd. As you may remember, Grant's brother lives in Tokyo so we will be spending some time with him and his family, but we would love to do something with any LCT'ers who will be in Tokyo if it works out. I would love to see your apartment, but I know you have family coming in as well so if that is too much, no worries! Keep us in mind if something comes together. Maybe a "Marc & Arlene" tour and orientation of the subway system would be in order! ;)
Just FYI for anyone considering air arrangements - we were able to get award tickets all the way to Osaka on Japan Airlines using our AA miles. We are taking a stopover in Tokyo for a few days, then we have a flight from Tokyo to Osaka on the 26th. Since Tokyo is a stopover, it did not cost us any extra miles. So it worked well for our particular circumstances.

Sheri, the morning of the 23rd, we, along with my folks, will be gone from Tokyo. We will be in Osaka/Kyoto area. I recommend just taking a flight from Narita to KIX or Itami. ANA domestic reservations don't show up in system that far in advance; that is why you are not showing any availability. For March, I am seeing one way fares of as low as 22,000-en or around $190 to Itami. I imagine same with JAL.
edited to add:
Dena, it looks like it won't work out this time for the apartment tour; we will catch up with you in Osaka. If you need additional room to stay, maybe we can leave a key in the flowerpot. :)

There is a flight from ALL NIPPON AIRWAYS #2179 that leaves Narita at 5:55PM & arrives Itami, Osaka at 7:10PM. That's the one that the AA agent got me for my flight schedule. Any idea of the most convenient way to get from the Itami airport to the city center? Taxi, bus or train?

Yeah, it seems the flights I did see are all leaving around that time. My flight gets into Narita at 6 p.m., so they don't work...but I will hang loose and see what turns up.
Thanks for the ideas Marc!
As much as I travel, you would think I would calm down a bit. I still get really anxious when I am by myself trying to get around in cities I have never been to. That's why I love those Regent transfers so much...they basically hold your hand! :)

Sheri, looks like the Regent website has removed all information about the land and hotels offered. Maybe they are updating it, but here is some information from a post Marc has in the roll call thread: Tokyo and Kyoto 4 Nights program, offered in conjunction with embarkation. Kyoto is Japan's cultural hub, and the very essence of traditional Japanese life. The futuristic Bullet Train, or Shinkansen, will whisk you away from modern-day Tokyo to historic Kyoto, where you'll step back 600 years into Japan's Classic Period. This ancient artistic, cultural and religious capital features 1,600 Buddhist temples, 400 Shinto shrines, a trio of palaces, dozens of perfectly-sculpted gardens, and scores of fascinating museums. A visit to Mount Fuji includes a drive up to the 5th station for spectacular views. Experience modern Japan during your full-day tour of Tokyo. Daily Details Day 1 Upon arrival at theTokyo International Airport, you will be met outside the customs hall and transferred to your hotel. Spend the rest of the day and evening at your leisure. Overnight at the Imperial Hotel - Tokyo. Day 2 After breakfast at the hotel, begin a day of sightseeing in Tokyo. In addition to the highlights of the city, you will visit the Meiji Shrine, a Shinto shrine dedicated to the divine souls of Emperor Meiji and his consort, Emperor Shoken. Continue on to the Imperial Place Plaza, from which you can view the two bridges that form an entrance to the inner palace grounds. The stone bridge in front is called Eyeglass Bridge, or Meganebashi. The bridge in the rear, formerly a wooden bridge with two levels, is named Double Bridge, or Nijubashi. The palace buildings and inner gardens are not open to the public. A visit to the Tokyo Tower Observatory offers a bird's-eye view of this modern metropolis, while a ride on a rickshaw at Asakusa will give you a feel for Tokyo's historic period. A stop will be made for lunch at a local restaurant. Spend the evening at your leisure. Overnight at the Imperial Hotel - Tokyo. Day 3 After breakfast at the hotel, you will depart for the drive to Mt. Fuji-Hakone National Park. Enjoy a two-hour drive to Lake Kawaguchi via the Chuo Expressway, then visit the fifth station of Mt. Fuji for panoramic views over this scenic area. Following lunch at a local restaurant, you'll proceed to Hakone for a boat cruise on Lake Ashi for more scenic views of Mt. Fuji (weather permitting). Afterward, drive through the Owakudani Valley on your way to the Odawara Station, where you'll board the JR Super express bullet train to Kyoto. Upon arrival in Kyoto, transfer to your hotel. Spend the evening at your leisure. Overnight at the Westin Miyako Hotel - Kyoto. Day 4 After breakfast at the hotel, you will begin your day of sightseeing in Kyoto. Your city tour includes visits to the Golden Pavilion at Kinkakuji Temple, a Zen temple formally known as Rokuonji, and dating back to 1397. The present building was erected in 1955 after a fanatical monk burned the pavilion. Next, you will proceed to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Nijo Castle, residence of the founder of the Edo Shogunate. Complete your immersion into Kyoto tradition with two Japanese cultural experiences, calligraphy and origami. Lunch at a local restaurant is included. Spend the evening at your leisure. Overnight stay at the Westin Miyako Hotel - Kyoto. Day 5 After breakfast at the hotel, you will spend your morning sightseeing in Osaka, including visits to the 16th-century Osaka Castle and Shiten-nouji Temple. The Buddhist Temple is typical of the Asuka Period, and was built by Shotoku Taishi 1,400 years ago. Following lunch at a local restaurant, transfer to the Osaka Tempo-zan Port and your waiting cruiseship.
Notes Program includes: Two nights at the Westin Miyako - Kyoto, Two nights at the Imperial Hotel - Tokyo, Half-day orientation tour of Osaka, Full-day tour of Kyoto, Full-day tour of Tokyo, Visit to Mount Fuji and lake cruise, Transfer between Odawara and Kyoto by Bullet Train, Breakfast daily, Three lunches, Transfers as applicable. Guests booking this program as a PRE cruise tour will fly into Tokyo. The official hotel check-in time is 3 p.m. and check-out is 11 a.m. To ensure early check-in, you have the option of purchasing hotel accommodations for an extra night. Late check-out may be arranged and paid directly to the hotel on a space availability basis. Your hotel stay includes breakfast, tax, service charges and luggage handling.
