So much for staying in Fort Lauderdale the night before a cruise and having easy access from the airport to hotel, and hotel to the ship huh? :(

I have only sailed once out of Miami and I don't remember the details, is the port far from the airport and hotels?

Port of Miami is a long way from the airport, but from what I read on CC, there are some nice hotels and restaurants fairly close. But no more "ship to airport in 10 minutes".

I just googled and it said 8.7 miles, about 15 mintues. I guess that's not too bad but I did like the easy airport to port ride in FLL

When we sailed out of Miami about 9 years ago, it was fun by the port. There was a nice center with some stores and a great restaurant we've eaten in more than once. If I were going to the Caribbean or on a crossing I would not care about the port. There are a lot of ports we've been in that were not in the most wonderful areas and we'd still come in ahead and pick a decent area to stay in. No big deal.

Kathy, I think I am ready for a change, I have been to FLL so many times for a cruise and look forward to some new restaurants! I am sad to leave behind the old Yankee Clipper or whatever it was called before it got renamed to Sheraton. I loved it after the remodel, SO much nicer than the Hyatt pier 66

Oh my - on SAND that place was the pits! Neve3r stayed at the Pier 66; My dearest friend lives in Boca so we picked a few sailings out of FLL to spend time with her.

Its not far at all. I am not a fan of Miami X but when flying in and then taking a cab to South beach we drive right by the port. South Beach I believe has a flat fare to the cruise terminal, and as long as its not during rush hour its pretty fast to get there. I have been stuck twice at the bridge up at the FLL terminal that has added at least 10 minutes getting to port everglades from our hotel. The change should be interesting.

I've cruised out of MIA a few times this year. The flat rate from the airport to the port is $24.00.
The Hyatt near the port used to be okay for a short stay and you could get great Priceline rates, but I've heard it's in need of renovation. We usually go to South Beach now for our pre/post cruise stays. I actually just booked a room at the Setai for my sister and I as we will be cruising on RCCL's Majesty of the Seas in December.

Miami and Miami Beach are great places for a cruise to start from. Loads of wonderful hotels to choose from and a "food scene" that is second to none. There are far more hotels right in Miami than in FLL and really really good ones including a Mandarin Oriental!
for us Europeans it is seriously great news as we have to fly into MIA anyway... and then transfer to Port Everglades. This way we can stay in Miami for a few nights and enjoy it before boarding our ship.
