We will be spending one night in Sydney prior to the November 16 cruise on the Navigator. Does anyone know if the ship will be docked in Sydney Harbour or Darling Harbour? Suggestions for hotels?

I can tell you that when we sailed out of Sydney several years ago, they switched the location of the Mariner in the last minute. We were told it was going to be at Darling Harbor, and it turned ou to be at Sydney Harbor--much closer to where we were staying.

I wouldn't necessarily decide on the hotel on that basis.

I heard the Westin had good deals and the Hyatt is very nice. A number of us are staying at one of these hotels.

At this stage, the Navigator is due to berth at the Overseas Terminal at Circular Quay (best position) and hopefully that won't change. If its close proximity to the ship you are looking for, any hotel near Circular Quay should be OK. Depending on your budget, the Four Seasons is in a good position for the ship. In the centre of the CBD, I'd suggest Swissotel in Market Street (close to Centrepoint Tower). Some really attractive passengers are booked in at the Grace Hotel in King Street. Lee

Lee, we are planning on staying at the Hilton in February; is that in a reasonably good location?

When I was booking hotels, there was a special on the Four Seasons. I was talked out of that hotel because the rooms are very small by someone who stayed there previously. Most of the special pricing is now gone under capacity control pricing for these hotels. The Hyatt and Westin are over $400-$500 a night for the November sailing

The Marriott is a great location by Circular Key - within short walking distance to the ship. It's a great deal if you can use points.

We stayed at the Marriott about 5 years ago with points, and it was fine and very well-located. However, for this trip, we don't have enough points, and I was surprised at how high the rates were.

For Hyatt, there are STAY coupons that you can order. The Hyatt in Sydney allows you to purchase these coupons at an "inspire" rate. This rate brought the rooms down to $319 per night, which is still expensive, but a cheaper way to go.

There is a little boutique hotel that sits across Circular Quay from the ships moorage, the Sir Stamford at Circular Quay. That looks really nice and is very convenient and $250 AUD using their 2+ day rate including breakfast. I expect the one night rate is higher. One recurring comment about the hotel was that the rooms are large. its only 200M from the Opera House and looks over the Botanical Garden. We looked at it but it turns out we are not going on Sydney-Beijing

Terri, the Sir Stamford is on our list also. We'll probably stay there is we can't get free nights at the Park Hyatt.

Sir Stamford looks interesting. Turns out to be essentially the same rate as I got for the Establishment Hotel (including only a Continental breakfast), which gets rave reviews, but as I told Peggy, this boutique hotel may not be to everyone's taste.

Marc: The Hilton is almost in the centre of the CBD - I think it's in a great position (as long as you're not thinking it's in The Rocks or Circular Quay area).

Wow - I didn't realise how much it cost to stay a night in Sydney! What a pity I don't have a larger house!!

In July we stayed at the Swissotel downtown. It was great location and an easy 15 minute stroll to the Rocks or the Opera House.

I really wanted to stay at the Sir Stamford but one of the nights in our five night block was booked.

Make sure to shop all the sites. There was a huge $$ differential. I ended up booking through Agoda as it was about $75 a night cheaper that Expedia, Travelocity, etc. And $200+ less than the hotel's website.

I have stayed several times (but not enough times!) at the Park Hyatt in the Rocks. It is a superb, small hotel with a fantastic view of the Opera House, Bridge AND the Circular quay cruise terminal. In fact it can't be more than a five minute walk from the latter.
The restaurant there is also excellent. Almost all the rooms have a harbour view but it is worth requesting this when booking to make sure you don't get one at the end of the bulding which looks right onto the base of the bridge! And all rooms have balconies, except the ones at the end...

I agree, the Park Hyatt is in a fantastic position but the rates match! I'd probably suggest you wait until you get on Navigator to enjoy the view.

Thanks Hambagahle, didn't realize the PHyatt was so small. I hope they have room for me once I get this credit card Laurie told us about, because like Lee said (well, she didn't really, those prices are obscene!

You might want to make a room reservation now and then switch it to an award stay once you get the card. I had made my reservations months ago before the card even existed. I was planning on using a stay certificate (which while not cheap, is a lot less than the crazy real prices).

laurie, best thing you did here was to tell us about this card. I think I'll just wait. Otherwise book at something else maybe at the Sir Stamford. Crazy hotel rates in Sydney!

Try www.wotif.com for truly great deals in Australia. Using it, the Four Seasons is available Nov 15-16 for $295! (not sure US$ or AU$, but they are very close in value now). Sheraton on the Park is $230. Sir Stamford at Circular Quay is $290. Marriott Sydney Harbor is $379. Intercontinental is $356.

WOTIF, an Australian web site, has some really amazing deals. We traveled for three weeks in Australia, from Melbourne to Brisbane, relying only on Wotif, and were consistently impressed with the hotels and particularly, the savings we got. It has a map feature that will show you where the hotels are. If the ship is docked at the Circular Quay site, you want "Sydney CBD", if at Darling Harbor, you want something near there, I would think. We've been in Sydney three or four times and always stayed in the Central Business District (well, once on the Voyager's first World Cruise, it was a 2½ day port call; we stayed on the ship at Circular Quay/Sydney Cove).

Marc, the WOTIF site is basically a late booking source, out about three months (it used to be limited to about three weeks, but right now it's showing out to Jan 17th). But check it out, right now for the date above, Wotif shows the Hilton at $529! The site has a map feature that shows where the hotels are, and you can be selective on establishment type, # of stars, room type, maximum cost, etc. Look forward to seeing you and Arlene in Jan for FIESTA FUN!

[size=8]Too Many To List - 416 days & counting on Radisson/Regent, and 150+ days on 8 other lines, with one cruise booked next month on the Mariner, Miami to Honolulu 22 days

Great recommendation. We used wotif (by recommendation of a friend who is a travel agent in NZ) for Auckland. We are staying at the Langham for $149 NZ, including full breakfast, a suite upgrade, free parking and late check out.

Hi,
I am brand-new to this site and saw your post. I've been to Australia maybe 50-60 times. My favorite hotel was Sheraton on the Park. The Hyatt at the Rocks is also a good one. Another one would be the Regent.

Thanks,
Teri
