A beautiful launch of the space ship this morning. Wish you could have all seen it, with us, first hand. This is such wonderful news for all of us here on the space coast of Fl. Our daughter, Charla works at KSC, and believe me, she will be in a much better mood. :) This has been a long time coming. Yea, Discovery!! God speed!!! Betty

As we watched the TV the announcer said, 30 seconds into flight, speed now bla, bla, (I forget the actual speed at 30 seconds) But, it seemed to be 0 to 2,000 MPH in a matter of a few minutes....NOW that is one heck of a V-8 !!!!!! :)
They will be just fine..... Bob

Actually, we go from zero to 17,600 mph in 8 minutes 30 seconds. That is also the speed the Shuttle is orbiting around the earth. For those of us who work on the Shuttle it was a very exciting and emotional day!

Wonderful to see the shuttle back in action. Dixiechick, if you work for NASA I can only imagine what today must have been like. Congrats on a job well done.

Thanks for the congrats. It is nice to see the country get behind our space program. It has been a long 2 1/2 years. Michele - no I am not at the Space and Rocket Center. Actually, it is a museum and the home OF US Space Camp (Bruce Springsteen was just here for his 2nd child's graduation from Space Camp!) and is not a part of NASA. While I work closely with NASA, I work for the company that builds and operates the 3 main rocket engines (on the back of the orbiter).

Space Camp is a great way to get kids interested in math and science. They really do have a wonderful curriculum (for all ages) that is very real to what the astronauts experience. It also teaches them team work as they are each part of a launch team and stay in dorms configured like the space station. They even have a mission control simulation in braille so that blind handicap kids can participate. There is a space camp for adults and educators also. The actors of Apollo 13 (including Tom Hanks) spent time in space camp in preparation for their movie. I am very glad your grandson is able to have this experience while also having a fun time. For anyone interested here is the link for more information: http://www.spacecamp.com/

Yea!! Good job, Discovery!!! It would have been better, had the weather cooperated, and had a landing in Florida been possible, but we'll take it! Good news!!! Betty

Tom & I watched it on TV (I woke up early to watch it!!) It was very exciting. Kathy, I was wondering if you'd be able to see or hear it. That must have been quite a surprise to wake up to it!!
