I would like to request a collective toast to a VERY VERY dear friend and cruise companion. George, of the Sheik (Gretchen, George, Marty and Erika) clan is very ill, and knowing him, I know he would be tickled pink to have a huge group of fellow cruisers raising a glass in celebration to him....

So, here's to a very handsome man, with an impish smile, a great sense of humor and a wonderful wife...

HUGS to you Gretchen, you are in all our hearts and prayers!!

Your friend, Sheri

We met George and Gretchen on MINT - though I didn't get a chance to have any extended conversations with George, Gretchen was a dear and I'm very sad to hear about their situation. Definitely best wishes to George - sending TONS of good thoughts in their direction!

Our best wishes to George for a speedy recovery and our best to Gretchen.

We've had the pleasure of cruising with them (George has a very dry sense of humor and is absolutely hysterical) and Gretchen is equally funny. What great people!

Best regards--
Bill (and Nancy)

Here's a toast to George, remembering him and Gretchen from MINT!

Just wanted to renew this to let Gretchen, Marty and Erika know that I am thinking about them, as I know all their other LCT friends are!!!

________
George Konstantinos Moskos

George Konstantinos Moskos sailed to his final destination on Saturday April 29, from his home in Venice, Fla.

He was a member of the Venice Sailing Squadron, the Venice Yacht Club, and Saint Barbara's Greek Orthodox Church. Born July 27, 1924, on the Dodecanese Island of Symi, Greece, he moved to Akron, Ohio, at age 11. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Japan and the Philippines. He worked for Goodyear Tire & Rubber and then went on to own and operate the Brown Derby Restaurant at Highland Square. He then had the insight to open one of the first restaurants in now-popular Montrose, the Montrose Brown Derby. He retired after 30 years of the restaurant business and moved to Venice to pursue his main passion, sailing.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Konstantinos and Irene Moskos, and his brother-in-law, Gus Girves. He is survived by his wife, Gretchen, and his sister, Mrs. Lela Girves (Moskos). Also, his former wife of 42 years, Wally Moskos, and their children Nina Hoffman (John--his sailing buddy), Rene Vance (Bryan), Erini Moskos, Dean Moskos (Aimee), Nick Moskos (Dianne), along with 10 grandchildren, and niece and nephew, Irene Johnson and Parris Girves. Special friends include Tommy Eliopoulos, Dr. Bob Hemphill, Emanuel Levenderis, Aspasia Alexiou, the Farmakides families, as well as many others.

Dad, we will always remember you sailing on glistening seas with your favorite cigar; and may God grant you eternal pink skies at night--sailors' delight. You will be deeply missed by your loving family and all your friends in Venice and Akron. Salute!

George has had a memorial and burial in Venice, Fla. A 40-day memorial service will be held at the Greek Orthodox Church in Akron on June 18, 2006. Memorial donations may be made in George's name to Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 129 S. Union St., Akron, Ohio 44304.

Well, I tried to enter this in George's online guest book, but they declined to use it, so I thought I would post it here...

On September 9, 1994, a US Air jet crashed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. One passenger was an up and coming Christian singer named Kirk Lynn. Eleven days prior to the crash, Kirk recorded a song, "As We Sail To Heaven's Shore”. This was played at the memorial service for the passengers.

I thought this song about sailing was appropriate for my dear, sweet friend, George! May you rest in peace, with calm seas and soft winds!

Storms may rise on seas unknown
While we journey towards our home
Surely we'll learn what grace is for
As we sail to heaven's shore

Send us strength O pilgrim guide
Sin would drown us in its tide
Be close at hand and go before
As we sail to heaven's shore

Holy Spirit lead us on
Give us courage bring the song

Lord we trust Your Father's care
Will convey us safely there
Open or seal off every door
As we sail to heaven's shore

Straighten our course with every prayer
Let heaven's breezes speed us there
And grant us mercy evermore
As we sail to heaven's shore

Draw us near O finest Friend
From dawn's light to evening's end
Each passing day we love You more
As we sail to heaven's shore
As we sail to heaven's shore
