On cc there is a report about a small engine fire on Navigator that will cause the next cruise, at least, to be canceled. Here is the report

http://www.cruisecritic.com/news/news.cfm?ID=1241

Hope none of our members are aboard!

Joanna, I hpe that muster call would awake me as I am not easily awakened, but would certainly want to be in this situation!

I am not sure it would wake either of us up, either. I'm deaf in in my right ear, and prone to sleep with my left ear buried in the pillow (Mark gets kind of rowdy in his sleep most of the time).

And the cruise after the cancelled one is the one Sue didn't get on.

Well at 1AM Tony would probably be coming back from the casino - I would be sound asleep - I'll bet he'd go straight to muster station without me - Joanna

Joanna, you are so funny!

This news stinks for people onboard now and those coming on next.

I am just glad no one was hurt!

It has been a day to end all days today. I caught one man just in time as the doorbell rang and his ride to the airport was at the door.

My two children and their spouses were due to sail tomorrow and I was going to take care of the kids. First time they have been able to get time off together. They are VERY disappointed.

One wonderful passenger pointed out with all our young men in Iraq and the victims after the Tidal Wave this is not the end of the world. I would have kissed him over the phone if I could have done that. How true is that statement.

So if I did not respond or forgot something today forgive me but I have had two big glasses of wine and I am feeling much more "chilled out" I needed some of Todd's cosmos tonight.

Ngaire,

I am sorry - what a terrible thing to happen. Having the Grandchildren not appear would be the bigger disappointment. Reminds me of the saying, all dressed up and no place to go. Better to be caught at home than arrive at the dock to find out no cruise!

Ngaire,

Oh my gosh, what a day you must have had! So sorry about your children missing on this cruise. I'm now even more appreciative that you took the time to answer my silly e-mail so quickly.

Sorry about your rotten day, Ngaire, and that I sent you a mundane email about something that could have waited. It's true that the cancellation of cruise is hardly the end of the world.

So true Gatowoman

One man is delighted he got his $1000 off and one of the cruises offered was an 11 day cruise for the price of 7 days.

Sorry to hear about the "hectic" day, Ngaire. Hope tomorrow will be better ... and sorry to all of those whose cruise got cancelled. Sure, it's not a disaster ... but I'm sure it's a big disappointment for those people. :(

I guess that there are mixed blessings here..no one was hurt and a future cruise is now discounted to compensate for the disappointment. Out of idle curiousity, did anyone opt (or was able) to switch to another cruise?

Must have been a scary situation for those people on board and dissapointing for them and those who were to board for the next cruise. (Your children, Ngaire.) But thankful no one was hurt and that they will look forward to another cruise. When RSSC cancelled our cruise once, only a few weeks out, they made the same offer to us for another cruise and they compensated us for the airline tickets we had purchased.
Hope you have a better day today, Ngaire!

Oh goodness, my heart goes out to those so rudely awakened at 1 am, to those who will miss a planned vacation, to Ngaire and all the TA's who will spend time cleaning up some of this, to the staff and crew of the Navigator, and especially to those who bought their own airline tickets.

Thankfully no one was injured. It is really good to get some good news.

If you don't show up for muster call, I do believe they will just about break your door down to get you out. Heck, what they go thru on the drills if you don't make it is pretty impressive.

Sue, aka Curious Cruiser, could not get her Navigator 25 cruise prize because it was sold out. If the ship misses more than the one-week sailing Sue will have been among the first to find out that she could not get on.

The client Ngaire mentioned definitely knew how to put this into proper perspective. As I was shivering in our heated home this COLD morning (zero degrees outside) I thanked God for shelter, food, clothing and family realizing that millions in our world don't have these basic needs met.

Wow how scary that must have been!! I feel bad for those whose cruises are being cancelled - but it sure sounds like RSSC is on top of it and doing everything they can to compensate those passengers. Sorry too, Ngaire, that you had such a bad day - I think though that like Kathy said, not getting the Grandchildren would be worse - maybe you can keep them anyway and the parents could just go somewhere for a few days to still get away and enjoy each other's company sans little ones.
Your client certainly put things in perspective though, and it is good to remember that and remember that there are many worse things that could have happened.

Good gracious what a scare that would be! I hope everyone who was scheduled to go on the 18th can reschedule another cruise. I know how hard it can be to plan and have to rearrange at the last minute. But, as we have all said, other disasters put these things in perspective. Ngaire - I hope your day today goes more smoothly!

Radisson cancels cruise after fire

By PATRICK DANNER

pdanner@herald.com

None of the 481 passengers or crew members on board the Radisson Seven Seas Navigator was injured after a Monday morning electrical fire in the ship's generator room.

The Navigator, however, will have to undergo repairs. That forced Fort Lauderdale-based Radisson Seven Seas Cruises to cancel a week-long Caribbean cruise supposed to have departed tonight from Port Everglades.

Mark Conroy, president of Fort Lauderdale-based Radisson Seven Seas Cruises, said the fire lasted less than five minutes but shut down power to the ship and its engines. The ship operated on emergency power for three hours before main power was restored, he said.

The fire occured about eight miles south of Great Inagua in the southern Bahamas, while the Navigator was heading for Port Everglades. Cause of the fire wasn't immediately known, Conroy said. The Navigator was slated to arrive in Port Everglades Tuesday night and passengers were scheduled to depart Wednesday morning.

Radisson has offered passengers a $1,000 discount for a future cruise. The 470 passengers who were supposed to depart Tuesday will receive full refunds and a $1,000 discount on a future cruise, Conroy said.

After repairs are completed, the Navigator is scheduled to resume sailing on a week-long cruise leaving Jan. 25 from Port Everglades. Upon its Feb. 1 return, the Navigator will head to Jacksonville where it will be among a handful of cruise ships providing additional rooms for the city during Super Bowl festivities.

You have to feel sorry for those who shopped and packed for the next scheduled cruise. For those that were on that particular cruise, I just cannot imagine how scary it would be to wake up from a sound sleep to a muster call. I remember the first morning when the waiters sent me back to our suite to take some drugs and go to bed and the call that came at 12 noon from the captain and I just freaked out from dozing!

What no pictures of me and my free Cosmopolitans?
Yes, I enjoyed an extra 24 hours on the Navigator with open bar and more scrumptious food than my body needed! They have a new chef that is great and my scale attests to that.

While we went without power and lights for sometime, it was quite peaceful. It was dead quiet and the star show over the water was outstanding. I think Ngaire's passenger was so wise in stating that there is much worse happening in the world. It was a minor inconvenience and Radisson took care of all the rescheduling of flights, hotels, etc. even for passengers that had made their own arrangements. I think the future cruise certificate was quite generous particularly since we were already on our way back and didn't miss any ports.

Karen,
Actually there was quite an array of clothing on passengers and crew. My room steward was in a mini skirt, halter top, and spike heels with her life vest. Due to the lack of lights, my husband was in a stylish RSSC bathrobe as well as was the man across the hall. I put together long pants,a sleeveless top, and tennis shoes as we had no air and it was a bit hot, and they say you need to be prepared for all types of weather. Some got dressed up in their finest, had their handbags, jewelry, passports, etc. It was very interesting the different directions people went. Some never poked their heads out of their suites. We never had to leave our suites nor was it required we get dressed, but some felt we should be prepared. Guess we were remembering the Girl Scout/Boy Scout motto of "Be Prepared." Throughout I never doubted things were under control and we would all be fine.
