My wife & I are as inexperienced in cruises as you can get. Last Friday morning, I said "Let's do it." and with the help of a fantastic travel agent, our first cruise is on Tuesday's Alaska trip out of Vancouver on the Mariner. For business & personal reasons, we use the Internet on our frequent trips; but we're totally ignorant on the details of on-board-The-Mariner computing. It looks like wireless is available, but I haven't found a pricing schedule. Any information will be appreciated. Mike

Karen, I really appreciate your detailed answer. You must have been asked the same question a time or two in the past. While pricey, if the speed is good, it shouldn't be too bad. We're really looking forward to the entire experience. Thanks again, Mike

Originally posted by kutchins: While pricey, if the speed is good, it shouldn't be too bad. Mike, I'm sorry to tell you that the speed typically isn't that good at all. Remember dial-up speed? Think along those lines, rather than broadband speeds most of us now take pretty much for granted. Every now and then it's fast enough that you don't think about it being slow -- but most of the time, it's pretty slow. It's fine for sending or receiving a limited amount of email, but you wouldn't want to upload more than a handful of photos at a time, for instance. To me, it's not a big deal or problem, but if you're expecting to do a bit of work online while onboard, I just wanted to set your expectations appropriately. (If you cruise Regent a couple more times, one of the nice early benefits you pick up as a silver-level member of the Seven Seas Society is free Internet service -- which I've found helps mitigate frustration at the slow speed. ;) ) Welcome to Regent cruising. If you're like most of us here, you'll love it and find yourself hooked ad spoiled. We're just a week behind you in sailing on the Mariner. -- Eric

Mike, I work from onboard while cruising. I find that internet speed depends on where we are and how many are using the system. Early mornings and late evenings are pretty good. It can be a bit slow for uploading photos, which will make it more expensive for you. One tip is to bring your laptop, compose emails, etc. offline to maximize your time online. The other tip is to sail enough on Regent to become a "silver" and then you won't have to worry with the cost. :) Welcome to Regent. You'll love it.
