If my computer sits idle for about 5 hours I can't click Internet Explorer without it saying "server can not be found" and I get the "Page can not be displayed" and have to reboot. My friends leave their computers on 24/7 and never have this problem. Do I need to change some settings or ?????????? confused
Thanks!

Marcie

Do you have a wireless internet connection? If so, when the computer goes to sleep the connection is broken. You have to wait for it to connect when you start to use the computer again.

Marcie, it might have something to do with your power settings? Go to your start button, then control panel and then power options.

Maybe if you set you computer to never hibernate? What are your settings set to now? This is how mine is set:

Laptops are set to hibernate to save battery power usually from the factory.

I don't think Marcie is usually on a laptop. When my desktop has been idle for a while, I have to remind it that it is, in fact still connected. So far, it's always taken the hint.

Sounded like a laptop from this post. My laptop goes to sleep after a short period. My desktops never sleep.

Yes, I know they have a wireless laptop. I said I didn't think Marcie was usually on a laptop.

My desktop does sleep; it's set up that way.

Pam,

Don't you use a Mac? Or are you a PC person?

Yes, I prefer a Mac for several reasons. But my kids are PC people, so depending on whose house we might congregate at, we could have any variety of Mac/PC's going at once.

For what it's worth, my kids' PC desktops are also set up to sleep after a certain time period. Is that what your question was leading to?

I'll just jump in here and tell everybody to stop using Internet Explorer, and switch to Firefox. And Thunderbird for email. MSIE is a roach motel, and I consider it a virus.

Pam, you are right I rarely use the laptop at home but we do have wifi. My problem of always needing to reboot are with the desktop not the wifi.

Marcie, I'm sorry I assisted in derailing your thread. If you can't get the "sleep mode" stopped, I can ask my SIL about it. He is the head computer geek at FedEx.

Just that Mac's are different than PC's; And for PC's depends on the brand how they are set from the factory;

I think Marcy has a Sony laptop, if I recall and that it's confgured differently than the Dell's and HP's - and of course the Mac. I have a Mac and a few PC's both laptops and desktops.I use Dell for all my PC's - laptops hibernate and the desktops don't.

Wendy - I went back to IE after using Firefox for awhile because too many sites I went to were not compatible with Firefox. Otherwise, I preferred it to Explorer.
That was about a year ago - might be worth relooking at those sites that didn't work.

Do you know if Thunderbird has imap capability so I can get aol & netscape mail there?
And I have so much saved in Outlook - I'd be afraid to lose it.

Yes, Thunderbird has IMAP. Mozilla and its cousins have always supported imap.

Firefox has gotten better, as have websites. There's still the odd site that insists on IE, but not many, it's pretty rare.

Gil,

We have computers set up for both Firefox and using Outlook - you wouldn't lose your Outlook info if you set up Firefox; Are you using Outlook or Outlook Express?

Using Outlook.
Was a long (still ongoing) learning curve - esp when Netscape decided to close dwon & switch to aol mail.

Do you find any sites that won't work in Firefox?

Once in a while, I need to use IE since Firefox won't read them properly; I also use AOL and that has realy caused any websurfing to be weird lately.

Wendy - My husband put Mozilla on our computers quite a while ago and that's what we mostly use. Yes, there are times when I need to use Explorer (such as to see a link that someone has posted on here) but other than that we stay away from Explorer for the reason you mentioned. Do you think Firefox has advantages over Mozilla? I'll tell Bill what you experts have to say.

Firefox is more secure than IE - IE has more security holes in it than a sieve. Just an overall bad programming exercise from MS. Not to say that Firefox doesn't have its own problems -- but they're certainly much less than IE. Firefox and Mozilla are about the same (they're from the same open source code).
