We moved yesterday from a rental apartment (a temporary place after selling our house) to a Coop apartment building nearby. This is an unbelieveable story - Joe Bpflsk (sp?) surely is following us.

Yesterday the movers were supposed to show up at 8 to pack us (We decided to let them do it instead of us). They then said 9 - and showed up at 10:15. Upon walking in they said "You don't look ready." They were there to MOVE us, not to PACK us. No one ever came to pack. So they had to start packing. The place we were moving to has house rules that won't allow moving after 6. So by 2:00 they were still packing, and a decision was made to get our furniture & stuff moved, and finish today. As they started carrying things from our apt, onto the elevator & then onto the truck, the elevator dropped dead. Only one elevator in this building. It would not be fixed until evening. They loaded alot of stuff back into our apt to do today. Most of the big stuff was already in the truck.
So they arrive at our new place around 3:30, start to unload, and the skies opened up - heavy, torrential rains. They were drenched. They managed to cover our stuff pretty well though. It was about 90 degrees & 100% humidity, so it was hot a heck in the apt even with the A/C going. As they are unloading through the rain, the power went out in the neighborhood from the storm. So now they are working in the dark & with no A/C. They finally get everything in & stuff put together by 6:30, and leave, to return to finish today.

They again arrive 1t 10 - 2 hours late - and again, the elevator went out! But even before it went out (It was only out a few minutes this time) someone else is moving out & using that same single elevator!

So do you want to hear about the Cable guy who showed up today to install cable who said "I don't think I have enough wire," and also did not have the correct cable box?

What a couple of days this has been! We are badly in need of a cruise - 6 weeks to go!

What a move! I thought that I had the world's worst move but now I'm not sure. I once moved with the packers smoking and dropping ashes in the boxes (didn't discover until I unpacked). They were big men in their twenties and I was there by myself (in my late twenties) and afraid of them. They wore those hunting vests with pockets. When they would put them aside I would check the pockets to see what they had stolen. The day we moved they arrived 4 hours late and one of the movers was drinking. After he drug my velvet sofa (ok this was a long time ago)across the floor, my husband said, "that's it." He talked to the foreman who told us to call the police. By the time the police came, the mover was passed out in our front yard with his legs hanging out into the street. By this time it was 9pm and dark inside because we didn't have many overhead lights in the house. The truck they brought was too small and they left with our refrigerator strapped onto the back door of the van. Oh, by then the police had brought the drunk mover back to go home with his buddies. We had to close on our new house the next day; so, at 2am in the morning, my husband and I drove our cars to our new location (2 hours away) with two tiny children along. Thankfully, we lived to tell about it!

The worst is over, Gil. Enjoy your new home.

Masaki - "It aint over till its over!" And it is far from over. Now we learn all the things wrong here - like the A/C is grossly insufficient.

Gil, your experience is too fresh to be hilarious yet, but Donna, you have got to be laughing about your move by now! And if you aren't, take comfort in the fact that I was on the FLOOR laughing!!! I mean, having to call the police!! And the mover passed out drunk on the lawn. Please stop, I can't take it any more. There really is nothing more stressful than moving, in my mind, but you two had experiences that take the cake!

It began uneventfully. I arrived at the house a little before the set time of 8am and the truck was already there. However, in good Swiss timeliness, the bell rang at exactly 8am.

All began comfortably as the articles began to arrive. Dave the Dish arrived on time to install the satellite dish and reported the signal was strong. Since there was no TV yet, he walked me through how to use the box and we discussed that he would return, hopefully, at the end of next week, when my SIM card arrived. He explained, until that time, I would only have news (CNN, SKY, BBC, ITV), 2 old movie channels and the travel channel plus lots of shopping clubs. Disappointed, and $1400 CHF poor, I settled back to direct the location of boxes.

Then, the only gentleman who spoke English, out of the 5 there, said, for the first time, in a little nasally voice, Meesees Vat-air-hoos, ve have a BEEEG problem. He then pointed to my $6600 rug that was soaking wet and mildewed and told me the container had been wet. I said, call your office. We're insured. Then, the folks from Bernard TV showed up early, about 10am with my new flat TV and VCR. They were absolutely terrific, coming with all the necessary cables and extension cords and then spent about 45 minutes explaining each and every detail of how to use the equipment. I was delighted with their service and highly recommend them to anyone purchasing equipment within Basel. They even hooked up my phone for me, so I had a working phone. I was smiling from ear to ear when Herr Nasal Voice (HNV) tapped me on the shoulder and said, Meesees Vat-air-hoos, you vill no longer be smiling. Ve have a BEEEG problem. Youre couch won't fit up the stairs. Now, I had asked the relo folks to ensure that there were no issues with size of household goods and they had said that there was no problem. I then suggested trying the window. HNV went off and reported that this would work and he would need a crane. Five minutes later he tapped me on the shoulder and said, Meesees Vat-air-hoos, ve have a BEEEG problem. One crane is broken and the other crane is in Bern. It won't be available until 2pm. I said fine. What was it with the big problems, they were all solvable? I started to unpack the boxes and HNV said, Meesees Vat-air-hoos, ve have a BEEEG problem. I was ready to lunge across the room and cut off his air, but controlled myself and braced myself for the next onslaught. The mattress would not fit. I suggested taking it in through the outside deck. . HNV went off and reported that this would work. The mattress appeared no worse for wear and I breathed a sigh of relief and then I heard the infamous words…. Meesees Vat-air-hoos, ve have a BEEEG problem. The box spring won't fit. What is it with this guy who couldn't work anything out. Everything was a big problem. Where were the solutions? So, I went up to check. Darn, this time he was right. It was 1 1/2 inches too large for the door. Shouldn't relo folks be able to tell one that a queen size box spring won't fit? Shouldn't they check? He then suggested cutting the box spring in two for $1500CHF. I said no way. He then announced they were going to lunch and I said "what about the boxspring? It's pouring out here and the boxspring is only covered in cardboard." Then, he said, "Oh, it was already badly damaged in the container flood." This meant that I had to sleep on a mattress on the floor.

No sooner had he returned from lunch, one hour later, than I heard the infamous words.. …. Meesees Vat-air-hoos, ve have a BEEEG problem. Something is Veery bad broken. Yes, mirrored pieces from my sofa table were everywhere. And, before I could recover, he again said …. Meesees Vat-air-hoos, ve have a BEEEG problem. Something else is Veery bad broken. This time it was my glass pieces from my coffee table. And a few minutes later, the infamous.. …. Meesees Vat-air-hoos, ve have a BEEEG problem was again uttered as he pointed to my shattered end table. What else could go wrong? Meesees Vat-air-hoos, ve have a BEEEG problem. It turned out that the crane was stuck in Bern and the couch would not be able to be put in my apartment until a later date.

I was exhausted and ready to strangle the folks who packed my stuff, when I again heard the irritating phrase …. Meesees Vat-air-hoos, ve have a BEEEG problem. This time my television stand was damaged beyond repair. At least I had finished emptying all the kitchen and bathroom boxes. As I opened up my computer case and palm pilot case, I noticed they were both empty. And where were my ski boots? And my expensive salt and pepper shaker and my candlesticks? As I was ready to discuss this with HNV, his folks began to unpack my clothes and one of the fellows let out a gasp. All my clothes had been crumpled and thrown into the boxes and were a disaster. They didn't use wardrobe or air shipment boxes. Mr. Nasal Voice called home office and reported the disastrous turn of events and left to get me wardrobe boxes for my poor clothes. He then returned and took pictures of all the damage. His men were really quite sweet and put all my clothes away for me. I realized that he, too, was trying to do his best, except for those legendary words…. Meesees Vat-air-hoos, ve have a BEEEG problem.

My phone immediately started ringing with apologies and promises to correct the issues. The main one was the boxspring. The Swiss don't use box springs. Their beds are a completely different system -- a thin mattress on top of wooden slats -- and the sizes of their bed systems were totally different from ours. I then called the US to see what a replacement would cost and decided to ask if there were split queen boxsprings. I received the good news that the boxspring was $440 and was available in a split boxspring. Then, the bad news….it would take 15 days for the store to get the boxspring and then it still needed to be shipped and the store did not ship oversees. I put my operations brain to work and called Simmons and found out that France actually sells their products and I called the number hopefully. HA! After 2 days, I received a call from the moving company in Amsterdam (from a guy from New York), who informed me that the insurance company agreed to pay for the mattress, but they were reserving approval of the shipping until they heard the cost. The total cost was $568 but it would be 4 weeks until I could get the boxspring. I emailed the costs to the moving company and about one hour later received full approval of the costs. OK, I'll have a boxspring in about a month. And now I have an investigator assigned who will look into the situation for the restitution of all the missing damaged things.

Friday, I ran from work and met the movers who screaming and leaning out my 4th floor living room window successfully hoisted my couch inside. And then, I got a call from the moving company in Basel. They found an empty computer case and my Palm Pilot and my ski boots. In the trash. Lovely. An hour later, I got a call from security at work to report down to them. Someone had dropped off my ski boots and palm pilot. I was so looking forward to lugging the boots on the tram home! Wouldn't you think the moving company would have delivered them to my home? They were probably afraid to face me.

Gil: I certainly hope that the AC is repairable, as inadequate AC is one of my biggest complaints, when I encounter it.

About four years ago, we began to "ourgrow" certain parts of our house, like the master bedroom, bath, closet, utility room, and the Garage. Oh, there were plenty of square feet, but no longer correctly allocated, as the house was built for us when we had three daughters at home and they are now grown and gone. So, we looked for another house. But when we considered all the money lost in comissions, fees,and of course the damnable move, we decided just to add on, as it turned out cheaper than the alternative, and our neighborhood would support a place the size of that which was to come.

Of course, adding on is no picnic either, but considering it in retrospect against our last move, it was almost fun!!

These stories are horrifying , it's amazing that any of you would be willing to ever move again. Of course, I'm sure Meesees Vat-air-hoos will come home no matter how awful that move might promise to be.

Well - my wife wnats to put this place on the market already! MOVE AGAIN????? NO WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!

The A/C is NOT repairable. The Super said to me "It's an old system, and when it gets humid it can't keep up. It would be very expensive to change it, and the people in this building don't want to pay the money." GOODIE!
The humidity just broke though, and at least tonight it is quite cool in here - with windows open, not A/C.

As for Richard's comment about renovation - we have a place in Manhattan that has been undergoing renovation since March. Absolutely no picnic! We hope to be able to live there bu July 4.

Gil, Donna and sedona -- Those are some of the most unbelievable moving stories I have ever heard! I have to admit I was laughing out loud at some of it. When we last moved, I remember sitting down in the middle of the living room floor, sobbing, and swearing "I will DIE in this house!" That was 17 years ago, and I've kind of got the bug to move again, but I think maybe you just cured it!

I have a house in the US too. It really isn't our dream house..but, then, that brings up the other horror story...renovations. What is worse renovating the house you are living in, buying a new house and remodeling it to "make it more yours", or building a new house from scratch? My husband is just happy to live in whatever and thinks I'm nuts when I suggest renovating or moving. Whenever things get bad, he's with Gil...he'll cruise.

Gil, excuse me for butting in...a suggestion...in Europe, we aren't allowed to put window AC units in or cut holes in walls (as buildings are historically protected), so we have units for the middle of rooms. They sell special AC units to place in the center of rooms that don't work quite as well as our US window or wall AC units, but the higher amp units are pretty good and I figure that they would certainly augment poorly functioning AC in the US VERY well. They are very attractive. You would only need to put in a 220 line (about $100 to put in, Doug and I just had it done)and buy an adapter at Radio Shack for $25. There might even be some units like this in the US using 110 amp. It is much easier than moving and would do the trick for you and Carole. Hope this helps. The units run from $500-$700 each and sit in the room like humidifiers.

Thanks for the suggestion. I had already checked for things like that and found several. BUT - they all require either venting through the window with installation of a venting kit, or drilling holes in walls for pipes to vent to the outside. So they won't work here. I am thinking of a Dehumidifier.
OR - since this place is SUPPOSED TO BE AIR CONDITIONED, but it isn't ON MY FLOOR (Top), I might just go ahead & put in a window A/C & let them try to evict me.

Just came back from taking a few more things from the old apartment. The parking garage in the old place is tight & requires driving through a serpentine of large concrete posts. as I was heading out, some SUV was coming in - a big one - Navigator. I could not get by & he would not back out. He pulled over into a space - bbut his car was too big for the space & as I tried to get by, scraped the right side of my car on a concrete post. Big dent, mirror damaged, and both front & rear doors damaged. A couple thousand damage I'd guess. And of course I cannot file an insurance claim (Denise - ask Alan - CAN I?).

ONE OF MY NEW NEIGHBORS

I met a guy in the garage here, and his name sounded very familiar. So I googled him.
WHOA! He is a 50 yr old psychiatrist. FOund alot of stories about him in newspapers in January 2003. He was arrested & arraingned for making plans to kill & dismember 6 people! He asked one of his patients to get him a gun. The patient went to the police. He then bought a gun from an undercover cop. Supposedly he told the Cop he wanted to kill these six by shooting them point blank in the head & heart, then dismembering them, put their parts into bags filled with concrete, and then dump them in the Atlantic Ocean.
One of the 6 was a 30 yr old patient with whom he was having an affair until she ended it. She has also charged hm with abuse.

He was held without bail, but eventually got bail reduced to $1 million. I do not know if he is now out on bail, or if he has been tried & acquitted. I don't think I willl ask him though.

Gil, your saga goes on and on. They say things happen in threes so bad move, car damage, crazy neighbor...you've had your three! Try to have a good Father's Day anyway.

Just don't hit his car or get on a condo board with him!

Gil & Andi, I am exhausted reading your moving experiences! Houses in Las Vegas are going up $10,000 a month. Our neighbor sold his for an incredible amount. John wants to put ours up for sale and sell everything and move to a trailer park and just travel. He says no packing; just sell everything. YA, Right! Sounds iffy even if we didn't have to work. Think we will stay right here. I couldn't take the stress of moving. It is bad enough packing for a 3 week cruise. :rolleyes:

I just can't believe what you've posted! The story about your "neighbor" is chilling.

Alan said that this is considered a collision loss, as you hit the side of a wall. The insurance company should pay for the damage, less your deductable. Your rates MAY go up, if the insurance company finds you are at fault - unless you can prove the other guy caused the accident as a result of his actions.

More stuff: Today I went to go online & had no Internet access at home. Our cable system shut it off when they noticed I was at the wrong address for my modem. The guy who installed it failed to inform the company. THEY SENT HIM!!!!
At least that is back now.

Oh, Gil, what a mess! But if you have comprehensive insurance on your car, you should be covered! I'm not an insurance person and don't live in NY, but I would be covered here. (Oops, just read that it would be collision, so ignore me)

When we moved here 23 years ago (24 in November), I had left my car at my mom's. Mark took his kids out on the lake to fish, took HIS car keys with him, and all the closet rods in the house fell down. After I had filled them with clothes. I had no car here to run away. Later that same night, we discovered that the plumber had swept all the grout from the upstairs shower into the drain, and plugged up all the plumbing. While Mark was gone to the office to try to find a snake, his 7-year-old's stomach suddenly realized that he had eaten an entire package of cookies that day. Yep, he threw up everywhere.

The plumber was located and came home with Mark, things got cleared out and kids put to bed, and the adults had wine at midnight. Luckily, I had told my 17-year-old to spend the night with a friend.

Oh my gosh!! Gil - I just said a little prayer that your day today goes smoothly and this week is disaster-free for you!

I want to move, but have heard so many horror stories like these I'm not sure it's worth it. Read an article about movers who quote you a price, load your belongings, then hold them hostage for more cash!

Didn't I mention that the Movers sort of did that, too! They loaded our stuff, then got to the new place & started to unload, and then the head of the crew said to me "I'm sorry. I forgot. We ahve to collect from you before you can unload." But at least he was nice about it!
I had no problem though paying them because the amount was correct based on the hourly rate I was quoted. Just took more hours than anticipated (Elevator out, power failure, etc.)

Gil...I'm sure you're looking more like your avitar as this move unfolds. Thank goodness you still have your sense of humor. This relocation certainly fits in the category of "move from hell!"

I'm a bit confused. Did you rent or buy this place that lacks AC? Either way, I would advise you to check with an attorney who knows about real property law in your state. Here in Oklahoma, a seller would have had a obligation to disclose the lack of AC. And you might have similar rights if you are renting if the landlord represented it as air conditioned. And I'm sure NY has even stricter laws against sellers/landlords.

We Bought a Coop (I think only NY has these oddities). As such, the Coop itself is responsible for the A/C - not the individuals. Cold air comes out - but there is no dehumidification taking place due to the nature of the system (Water cooled). So it cools only when there is no humidity. In a Coop, to upgrade the system, the Board has to approve it. Most people think this is perfectly fine. As a matter of fact, we see many people walking around with sweaters & complaining it is too cold. One of the people who is always cold happens to be my real estate lawyer's aunt. So even my lawyer told us how COLD the A/C was! But I do not consider over 80 to be cold. But, as they say Cui Bono!

I guess we all agree: MOVING IS NOT FUN!

With so many horror stories, I must add my 2 pennies worth.

Sedona's tale has a few more twists & turns, but... she did get into the house. The insurance company did eventually pay for the damaged goods. (But this is a tale best left for another time.)
And has spent many happy times in her lovely place. (more than a few of those times were even spent with me.)

Yes, Margo, she will be coming home in the not too distant future.
But, I know that all the stuff will fit through the front door!

Gil: sounds like a dehumidifier (spelling?) should do the trick for you. Bonus: you get destilled water!

I don't know about NY, but here in Okla the fact that the AC couldn't get the unit below 80 degrees would be something the seller would have a duty to disclose. This would be true regardless of the business entity type of the seller, including condo associations. All states and some cities have codes for heat and air units, that are used to determine whether they "operate properly" or not. When we did our add-on, we discovered that the heat and air system on one of the floors of our house wasn't quite up to code. We had it fixed, and it works much better now. From what you have said, it is impossible for me to believe that your AC meets ANY code, therefore is defective, and therefore the seller (even though a condo association) is in breach for failure to disclose. I'd again advise you to check it out with an attorney --- and pick one who does not think 80 degrees is cold! According to any code or other standards I've heard of, it certainly is not.

All these responses have somehow convinced me I am
"old", meaning averse to change, wanting to hover over my "stuff" and not wanting to leave where I am, even though I think I do. Only moves I have ever made were handled under my watchful eye with our own employees garnered for private duty with the lure of cash, and the one time when I had to "move" home from school to store everything in the attic for the kids to pick what they needed after college for life after that. I am glad not to be a partner with my fellow co-op residents, at least! Gil, hope all of your problems will be solved when you get on the board for your building! Andi, I can't even relate to re-locating to Europe, but I hope everything "fits" when you get back home!

Olivia - it's stories like these and our own experiences that make us never want to move again. So, no, you're not "old" - unless I'm "old" too. Which I might be. :)
