If you're looking for easy-to-carry gifts, there's a big temple in Tokyo (I'm blanking on the name) that has a lot of shops and stalls around it. One of the shops sells hand-made hand towels. They're beautiful, relatively inexpensive (average of the equivalent of $12 each when I was there 2 years ago), and add virtually no weight to the suitcase

Suzanne's suggestion of Chinese chops is wonderful. We bought them in Shanghai and they carved them on the spot. A great souvenir. Friends and family enjoyed receiving them as gifts. Right up there with the really good fake Rolexes!

Arlene - those temple books are also a great idea. I'll need to keep an eye out for one to record our visits on PANDA. Do you suppose we can find a monk with a panda paw print for an extra fee? :D

Cheers, Anne

I love the old obi I have as a table runner in my dining room. But it is long, and heavy.

Arlene,

Thanks so much for the information. I think a kimono as a wall hanging might be what I'm after. The temple book sounds like a perfect thing to remember Japan by.
