My phone arrived at 9:38 AM - I've spend all day playing and learning how to make it work - pairing it with the car was my only real challenge - I forgot how to enter the code - after a call to BMW I succeeded - still a few quirky things to work through but I LOVE IT!
At lunch when I showed a friend the stock reports and we checked the weather in Moscow, Paris and Cairns I think he ran out and ordered one too!

Margo, I just hope you love your iphone as much as I love mine. The more you use it the more you will find it does. I've had mine since Friday and I'm still finding new things. I might be a bit computer challanged so I might be a bit slow with it but its great!

This is great - we have our own little iphone support group here.
Doris, I know what you mean - every time I pick it up I find out something new - it's fun.
I think we'll have to take lesson from Robert!
Joanna - I know I'm a pathetic gadget girl - guess I didn't have a enough toys when I was growing up ;)

I have copied some posts from a mac centric website I surf below. IMO apple will fix this issue with a patch in the next software update (soon I hope).
In the meantime I'll keep my wi-fi off and my ask to join networks off, relying on Edge and my bluetooth connection (at home, sometimes - odly) for internet.
****excerpted posts follow****
It's not a fake. One of the principal analysts at the company is a friend of mine (he told us about this hack two days ago), not to mention a devoted Apple fan (and fulltime iPhone user).
The hack is definitely real (and it's not really a virus in the sense that it doesn't self-replicate - it's just an exploitable flaw that allows arbitrary code execution). That said, it really doesn't make a significance difference (though Apple should, and undoubtedly will, fix it). Unless you lock your iPhone with a passcode (which would be a major PITA), it's an inherently insecure device and should be treated as such. This hack doesn't give someone substantially more information than they could get by just pick-pocketing your iPhone or finding your lost iPhone. In other words, don't store anything on your iPhone (or any phone) that you feel must stay confidential.
Any limitations Apple puts on 3rd party apps are more likely for *reliability* than security. The iPhone is - like all cell phones - an inherently insecure device.
***more***
How the exploit works
1. An attacker controlled wireless access point: Because the iPhone learns access points by name (SSID), if a user ever gets near an attacker-controlled access point with the same name (and encryption type) as an access point previously trusted by the user, the iPhone will automatically use the malicious access point.
Unless they set up APs across the world, this is no big issue. The odds are slim too, seeing that it has to be the same SSID and encryption type. Not to mention the range of WiFi.
2. A misconfigured forum website: If a web forum's software is not configured to prevent users from including potentially dangerous data in their posts, an attacker could cause the exploit to run in any iPhone browser that viewed the thread.
Stick with major, trusted forums.
3. A link delivered via e-mail or SMS: If an attacker can trick a user into opening a website that the attacker controls, the attacker can easily embed the exploit into the main page of the website.
This can happen to any computer or device that connects to the Internet if you are not careful. Also, we all know not to click on links we are not familiar with or are unsolicited.
***more***
If you read the article, you'd see these people aren't particulary anti-apple and realistically toned down the long term implications. But that doesn't exclude the fact that this appears to be a real and serious issue which will likely be patched by Apple before August 2nd.
****end of excerpted posts***
Personally, I am not all that worried about this. Enjoy your new toys, my friends!

Here's some good advice on battery use...
*****
Paying attention to just a few commonsense pointers will pay off with a longer battery lifespan and battery life for your iPhone. The most important thing is to keep your iPhone out of the sun or a hot car (even the glove box). Heat will degrade your battery’s performance the most.
Apple indicates that their engineers are finding new ways to optimize your battery, so make sure you have the latest software updates. Other common sense tips include
- Use Phone regularly. Go through at least one "charge cycle" per month. - Lock/Sleep your phone when not in use - Turn off Wifi to save power - Turn off Bluetooth to save power - Turning on Auto-Brightness - Turn off the Equalizer (iPod setting) if you don't use it

Here is an ipod warning.....Our daughter in law had her new ipod in the hard case clipped to her waistband and she bent over and the case opened and the ipod hit the floor, and the glass had a hairline crack. Needless to say she went crazy...A very nice manager at the Apple store replaced it but did warn her to keep it in a soft case. I dropped mine, nothing happened, it was in a soft case!

Hmmm....I bought one of those hard cases (looked cooler!) but I rarely clip it on. It's either in my handbag or hand carried when I'm going from meeting to meeting...I'll take extra care now!

also re: hacking. Treat your cell phones carefully...I would be more concerned about folks who change/upgrade their phones and do not swipe the old cell phone clean of information. that is the bigger security risk, IMO.

An iPhone software update is available thru iTunes. 1.0.1 verifies your current software and updates your firmware and software. Synch your phone then click on check for update and follow the screen prompts. Do not take your phone out of the cradle until you are finished.
I'll post bug fixes, software updates, security patches (and other patches) & overall system performance improvements within the next 24 hours.
LOL - as predicted, update released right during Black Hat...go figure!

Safari seems much snappier!! Love that!
So far it seems like it's mainly security patches and little fixes like a bcc feature in mail. Will post more later.

R -
I did it. Walked in the ATT store and returned my Treo 680 and got the I-phone. Yesterday my young computer guru, Mac enthusiast, came over and organized all the bells and whistles. Was he ever excited to get his hands on it and he downloaded songs, photos, contact list thru Outlook Express, set up email, favorite places...the whole ball of wax.
I must say, I'm excited about this phone and it works wonderfully.
Penny thinks I'm off my rocker.
Cheers! Ray

Well, I’ve distilled about 10 thread pages to the following LONG post. As noted above the firmware/software update was primarily security related. Those of us who have turned off wi-fi because of the most publicized problem are safe to turn it back on now. Here\'s a link to what was covered in their security update. There are a few application enhancements but we should not expect much more until Leopard is released in October (we hope – anyone else upgrading?). It appears that people who hacked their phone have experienced problems. Otherwise the update went smoothly. Sorry if some of this is a bit repetitive….anyway on to the excerpts… ****************** Bug fixes I've noticed thus far: Google Maps: Before, if you used your fingers to stretch and expand a map, if you touched the URL or bottom bar, the map would shoot off to a new center. Very disconcerting. It doesn't do that now. Calculator: The calculator used to do an annoying thing when you launched it and started punching numbers. Sometimes it would start concatenating to the end of whatever number was already on the screen from previous usage. Now, when launched, if you start tapping numbers, they replace what was already there. Nice. Ear volume: My Iphone had "reasonable" volume in the ear speaker. It seems to be significantly louder. i tend to drop it down to 4 or 5 in normal room environment instead of 8 or so. Very nice. Ipod Speaker volume: I can now play songs louder without as much distortion through speaker on bottom of phone. nice. Ipod playing while surfing: Before, it you started the iPod playing and started surfing in Safari, within minutes especially if browsing a heavy javascript page, the music would crash and quit playing. I've been surfing and podding for 20 minutes with no crash. Very, very nice. *** There is now the OPTION in MAIL SETTINGS to BCC YOURSELF on all mail. *** Yahoo push seems to work better. I've had a delay but now they arrive almost instantly. Ayone else noticed this? *** My battery level now goes all the way to the top and the small batt icon at the top has a plug inside telling me it's fully charged. It's never done this on my phone! *** I notice that the iTunes window no longer opens up in the background whenever the iPhone is reconnected. That was annoying. *** PASSWORD LOCK can also now be set to REQUIRE PASSWORD up to 1 HOUR. Also a new feature. my main issue was fixed, which is listening to music while browsing Safari. (without crashing of course) *** It now has options for 1, 5, 10, 15, 30 and 60 minutes unstead of just 1 - which is awesome BTW. Sorry if someone has mentioned this already. *** For those who are too lazy to read the whole thread, IF YOU "HACKED" YOUR IPHONE (IE IFUNTASTIC) THEN YOU MUST RESTORE YOUR IPHONE!!! For me this was both expected and not a big deal. Sure it made me spend the time to reload all the crap back onto my iPhone but that comes with messing around with stuff you "shouldn't". I think we'll be seeing some more substantial updates in the weeks to come. It looks like the update was probably rushed out because of the security issues that had been getting so much press as of late. The fix to the arbitrary code execution bug that was over the news was included in the update, along with 3 others that were not as publicized. From the reports in the news, Apple was only told about the bug 14 days ago, so this is a pretty impressive turnaround on that front. I doubt that there will be a major update until Leapord arrives in October, although it is possible that they pushed this one out the door before the 2nd, and are saving the rest of the update the 7th. *** I don't know but i'm getting almost instant yahoo PUSH. *** Same with google mail. Fixed now. *** What I've noticed so far is ... - iPod external speaker is much clearer at higher volumes - scrolling on YouTube is much improved (the list would stall while loading thumbnails) - scrolling through camera roll thumbnails is still chunky (40 pics) - still can't rearrange Stocks list - i'm not sure if google maps is any less jumpy with pinch zoom-outs. maybe a bit? *** There were 4 security issues listed as being fixed by this update. The ISE buffer overflow bug was one of them. It was a problem in the handling of regular expressions. Another one had to do with causing a race condition on page load using redirects allowing cross site scripting, and that one was discovered by three employees of Adobe. *** Hm... my whole system seems... faster... *** Holy Cow! I don't know if it's just me but Wifi works perfectly now! Before it would switch to edge before loading a page but now it is stuck on Wifi. I'm lovin it! ***

I wonder if the reason why they're bringing up Leopard is because there's going to be some sort of tie-in if you sync an iPhone with a Leopard-installed Mac, or because the iPhone OS is built on Mac OSX and until they upgrade some core technologies in OSX they can't make major changes for the iPhone OS, or because Apple's so busy with trying to get Leopard out, they don't have the resources to work on upgrading the iPhone OS more?
Hmmm ... questions from a geek with too much time on his hands. :D

Just back from bkfst after walking in some very hot and muggy weather. Have I told you how much I love my new I-Phone? Yep, I do. Even checked LCT on it while in my hole-in-the wall rest. The only con feature of buying it is Penny's lingering frosty reception towards me for buying it in the first place. I mean, the whole world is not coming to an end just because we have to pay for the WC is several mos....is it?
Well, now, I'm thinking about one of those Mac computers. Desk top or laptop? Desk tops just came out with the spanking brand new operating system and I'm wondering if one of those puppies would be good for a WC as I intend to do considerable video footage as well as still photos and Mac's seem to be just the ticket for movie making.
I assume new operating laptops will be out soon. I would think a laptop would be best but when I look at Apple's website, the desktop doesn't have one of those....cripes....I forget the word...the box that sits below one's desk....and it comes with the camera, dvd player, etc. built into the screen. Seems like the desktop would travel well too, so what's the advantage one over the other.
What do you Mac-ee type people think?
Cheers! Ray

We are probably going to get a desktop (me) AND a laptop (Peter) in the next 6 mos. My youngest took over my dell desktop, and Peter wants to upgrade his 2 1/2 year old HP. Peter also is leaning heavily towards getting an iPhone for himself (did I say he was the one who bought mine :D )
Way to go Ray!! Congrats!! I was sad when my old Treo croaked but I am definitely not going back now!

Ray, we LOVE our iphones. Maybe if you bought Penny one she would become as addicted as the rest of us!! We just ordered cases from Sena, on line, for our phones because our daughter in law dropped hers and it had to be replaced. I dropped mine and got lucky, but I don't want to take that chance again. Keep enjoying....

I love my Sena case. Ray - I don't think the desktops have a new operating system. You may be referring to iLife 08, a updated suite of multi-media applications. More info on this can be found by clicking this link. I believe the current operating system OS X/Tiger is being updated via the release of OS X/Leopard in October. More info on Leopard can be found by clicking this link. I can not wait until the upgrade becomes available. :D Hope that helps.

Dna3: I offered to get her an I-Phone as well or that she could have mine. She said she wanted to stick with her new Treo 680. She inherited this type of stubborness from her father :>)
Sena...Never heard about them but will sure check them out.
Robert: Rats, but thanks for calling this to my attention. I guess I'll just wait for Oct. but don't want to cut it too close to the WC starting Jan. 6 so hopefully there will be no delays as I'll have to take some classes on how to make movies.
Gatowoman: Mac's or otherwise for the family?
Eugene: Thanks and happy keyboarding with your new computer.
Cheers! Ray

Ray: Click here for a link to sena cases. I got the kind with an opening over the screen opting to "protect" only th back and sides. My iPhone stays in a dedicated pants pocket. Click here for the store schedule. Hope the link works. If not I can walk you through how to get the info. EDIT to add: This store is currently closed for renovation. It reopens on 8/11/07.

Ray, we bought the case from sena that has the magnetic cover for the face of the phone. It's not too thick and quite nice...It's called the MagnetFlipper case. You can even use the camera with the case on. Never a need to remove the case, I like that feature.

Doris -
It fits in the dock or do you synch with just the cable? I use the cable.

Ray: It occurs to me that none of us ever really answered your question re: desktop vs laptop.. Originally posted by Ray:
Well, now, I'm thinking about one of those Mac computers. Desk top or laptop? Desk tops just came out with the spanking brand new operating system and I'm wondering if one of those puppies would be good for a WC as I intend to do considerable video footage as well as still photos and Mac's seem to be just the ticket for movie making.

We've discussed the OS and the new release of iLife so that covers your movie and photo questions...
Robert writes:
New laptops will not be out for a while but the current hardware is excellent. As far as the imac desktop:
* Everything is self contained in the screen - apple moved the "thingy" or tower into the screen. All you need (and get) is the screen, a mouse and a keyboard. From box to internet in about 10 minutes (okay, that's me and I'm a geek...but I bet you will get it wired and be surfing fast too).
* The desktop is definately NOT portable. While I have read of 2 individuals who have toated it to a meeting or two I do not recommend that. It's heavy!
* A laptop is the way to go if you need to travel with your mac.
* Compare apples to oranges when looking at the two - or heck, buy both!! Talk about frosty glares from Penny!!
LOL
I encourage other mac users to ring in.
What do you Mac-ee type people think?
Cheers! Ray Hope that helps... R
