Anyone getting one? Braving the mall or an ATT store? They started lining up in NYC on Monday, I think.

Just read a review of the pros and cons. I don't need anything that fancy, but would be interested in what you think of it Robert.

1st generation is typically the buggiest of all so I'll be the test bunny for the group.

Lynn: Few have the samples (demos) so I 'd be interested to read the review. Would you link me? If this phone is all that it is supposed to be, then it's pretty fancy.

Masaki and any other heavy mac users...thoughts?

David Pogue (who used to write for MacWorld) reviewed the iPhone in the New York Times.

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/27/technology/circuits/27pogue.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

I think the phone looks really cool ... but for my purposes, won't work since I need to run specialized software on my phone so until Apple decides to open up the software platform for iPhone, I'm stuck on the Palm platform and therefore, with Treo smartphones.

I will let you be the guinea pig on this one, R. If it's really cool, I'll virtually drool all over your phone. :D And of course, if you don't like it, you can sell it on Ebay afterwards for megabucks.

I thought the video that you can link to from Pogue's article was great fun and also interesting because of the demonstration toward the end. See Video

I just got my first cell phone and would have waited for the iPhone but the AT&T/Cingular network here in DC is just too poor.

Robert, I found the article in our local paper and tried to find it online (from NY AP)no
byline. However, the crux of this is who should and should not buy it. I will summarize:
Music listener: Possibly
Video watcher: Sure. large screen
Phone chatterer: Maybe (expensive)
The gamer: No
The corporate road warrior: No
/the frugal buyer: no
The photo buff: Not likely (only 2 megapixels)
the fashionista: Sure: best looking phone
The other problem they list is the AT& T Network coverage is slow.
Sorry I couldn't find a way to email you the whole thing.
Let me know what happens.

I got one. Stood in line only 3 hours at my local at&t store. I'm an existing client so I had been bombarded with info all this week (e.g. tutorial, plans. etc.) there fore I knew what I wanted and what it did.

I'm really loving it so far! My old Treo 600 had croaked back in Jan, my contract was up so I had decided to go without a contract on a cheapie phone (after being a Treo user, it was like going back to the stone age) until the iPhone came out....worth the wait!!!

edited to add: One of the reasons I loved the treo was that i could tap the screen to do things...blackberry never had the same appeal to me and despite me being a "corporate" user, I don't use my cell phone to do "corporate email triage"...the iphone has taken the "tap the screen" a step further, to the point that the only button you are dealing with is the "home" one. This is right up my alley, I can't stand buttons.

I'll get one next week. Can't deal with all the drama at the mall....Will keep you posted...

Edit to add that i did slip into the mac store and fooled with one for a few minutes. I think I'm gonna love it!! It was a mob scene but one kind employee must have seen the look of abject horror on my face and said - there's a few in the back and nobody is there - go and check them out. I took to the interface right away.

I think the Apple store online still has them in stock. You could just order one from there if you don't want to deal with the mall ... :)

Robert: Interface so easy Alexandra (our almost 4 year old) was doing the vids on You Tube!! By herself!!!

BTW the switching of phones was relatively easy for me (since I am an existing AT&T customer.) I set up iTunes earlier so I was all ready to go when I got home. I heard reports about people not being able to do the switch on Friday, but I had no trouble whatsover! It took them longer to ring me up at the AT&T store (horribly slow systems, since I guess everyone was hitting them at the same time)

I ordered mine yesterday online Apple Store - they haven't given me a delivery date but the site said between 2-4 weeks - I can't wait but I won't stand in line! Not on a cruise line or for a cell phone! LOL

I would gladly pay $85 and three days instead of $200 dollars and 14 days to get my old Treo600 battery replaced by Palm. No thanks! :)

Yeah, $85/3 seems fine with me.

It has been 24 hours and I still love the iphone. There are some cons but the pros outweigh them. Guess I never rerally noticed that many places I go are wi-fi'd so I'm never far from inernet access. Web access works well at home too.

I'm on my 2nd Blackberry and waiting for T-Mobile to get the 8320 in September. Before BB's, I had a Sidekick.

iPhone to me looks like an iPod w/ a phone. I didn't see an on/off switch in pics or video. Is there one? That is my biggest problem w/ my video iPod, and I surely would not want a phone/email device that is always dead.

My other concern (besides not wanting to leave TMO) is that soft keyboard. I do 95% mail and 5% phone. I am guessing this is not the device for me.

For the web access, does it turn sideways so you get the 3 x 5 pic?

***There are 5 buttons on the iphone. 1 serves as an off/on, wake/sleep button, 2 & 3 is volume up/down, 4 is ringer off/on and 5 is your home key.

My other concern (besides not wanting to leave TMO) is that soft keyboard. I do 95% mail and 5% phone. I am guessing this is not the device for me.

***The keyboard works great. It suggests words for you that you can accept by pressing the space key. I think at 95% e-mail and your desire to stay with TMO you should do just that.

Yep - very cool. Does it in photo too, full screen, so it's more like looking at photos.

Hope that helps.

R

Edit to add that I typed my replies within your quote, making it hard to read - sorry I fixed my replies by adding ***

Also, it, more like a phone with an ipod not t he other way around.

I think one thing to point out is that if you use a blackberry in order to do corporate email triage from your corporate email server, the iphone is currently not set up to do it (e.g.oit will do yahoo based e-mail accounts, for example), therefore not a fit from a requirements perspective (if that is a key requirement for an end user)

To add to Robert's comments, on the face screen there is only the home button, all the other ones are on the left side/top

Was just doing some reading on the $85/3 day battery replacement thing. It seems that they will send you a loaner phone while the service is being performed.

How it works: Sync the phone you are sending in so itunes is current, sync the loaner so it is a clone of your phone and sync your returned phone (which they wipe) and you are in business.

Very cool.

It really looks like fun, one of the docs at work got one and I played with it for a bit. Still not ready to shell out the $$$ for it. It took me several years to get an iPod...I am not a gadget chick.

The swiping part is very important, a lot of people don't do it and it is a security risk when you stop using an old cel phone

It is so totaly worth the wait - hang in!! You are going to love it.

Edit to add: I note you have a .mac account, even better. Do you have your iTunes account yet? Set-up will be fairly seamless. 10 minutes out-of-the-box and I wass surfing the web. E-mail or PM me with any questions (e-mail is best).

R...yes, my itune account is in place - my phone is apparently spending the weekend in Indianapolis or as Tom fondly calls it Indianoplace.

I'm excited about it's arrival - FEDEX promised by 10:30 Monday - I'll rushing home from my tennis clinic just in time to sign and connect!

Today someone asked me why I needed an iphone - of course no one NEEDS an iphone (I said) but my purse should be about 10 lbs lighter without all the things I carry that iphone will take care of!

Ok...that's an exaggeration too, but forgive me, I love these kind of toys.

LOL, M! I love these kinds of toys as well. P calls it my addiction. There's worse things to be addicted to, I suppose... ;)

My phone is on the wing - just left Indianapolis - wish it would be here tomorrow but I still think it gets to spend the weekend in a warehouse - maybe here in Sarasota???

Yea - how boring is it watching my phone travel from China? I guess you gotta be waiting to know. At least Robert understand - thanks for sharing my addiction!
