Since we've talked about some of our favorite songs, what are some of your least favorites?
To me one of the worst is Macarthur Park. The lyrics are so stupid....something like "Someone left the cake out in the rain. I don't think that I can take it cause it took so long to bake it and I'll never have that recipe again."
Who leaves a cake in the rain? What a Terrible Song!

Well, "Sweet Neo-con" is on top of my list. Those guys should read Laura Ingraham's "Shut up and Sing".

Worst song ever written? Gosh that's a good one..there are alot.. but I can think of one that drives me insane.. and on top of it written by Paul Mc Cartney..
"Somebody's knockin' on the door, Somebody's ringin' the bell Do me a favor, open the door Let 'em in."
do me a favor take that song and throw it outside in the rain with that cake!

I don't know about the worst song ever written but IMHO, the worst song ever recorded was "Lucy in the Sky in Diamonds" by William Shatner.
Sorry Trekkies but this was beyond awful.

Somehow in the pantheon of all-time great hits, I must have missed this one. I guess it wasn't my loss.. Did any one else besides Nimoy and Shatner of the original crew release any records?
I still find it hard to believe that Nimoy's cover is worse than Shatner's.
Maybe, if you could find a downloadable MP3 file of each and post the URL's, we could have a poll!

It's a close call -- but I still vote for Shatner.
Thanks for posting the link --- I had forgotten (almost) how bad this really was--
Will anybody else weigh in? Is it Nimoy or is it Shatner?
PS: I love Star Trek...not picking on your favorite show. But the ever over-emoting Shatner on the show must have been on steroids when he did this recording!

Anything live by Harry Connick Jr. Went to see a live performance in Chicago some time ago - they were so off key I thought it was a joke to begin the concert. Joke was on me. Yetch!
Under the "say it ain't so" category, at last Bob Dylan has run out of vocal cords. A sad occurrence but a bad day for all within hearing range. Cheers, Anne

Bill Was the William Shatner recording actually supposed to be a musical album? I always thought it was a joke/satire!

How 'bout: I've been to the desert on a horse with no name. It felt good to be out in the rain. In the desert you can remember your name...... Does anyone know what all that means???? Betty

How funny that some of these songs hit us differently.
"Benny and the Jets" was playing on the radio when I was taking my college boyfriend "home" to meet my parents for the first time....good memory for me, thus I like the song.
Same good memory for America's "Horse with no Name". I was a 20 year old student on a university ship going around the world (this was not a cruise, more like a slave ship) with only a juke box. Someone's boyfriend sent this tape to one of our few mail stops. It was the only new music we had for four months. We played it night and day. I still like it, because of the wonderful memories it brings back.
(Not to say that these are great songs).
While I'm here I'll add another stinker for me. "My Sharona" or however you spell it. What the heck was that about??? Editing to say I just googled it. Oh my, x-rated lyrics, I had no idea Sharona was a person...

Suzanne - yes, if you've ever done "My Sharona" for karaoke, the video that accompanies it is ... rather suggestive. While I admit the song itself isn't all that great, it makes a great party song. :)

I believe the song you referred to (Horse with no name) is about drug use, specifically heroin. Next time you hear the song, I think it may make more sense to you in this context.

Please ignore my previous response --- it's not true. Although urban legend says it was about heroin (horse is street lingo for heroin) and several radio stations banned it for its supposed drug references, I just googled the song and found out that these references were all contrived by the listeners.
Having read the songwriter's piece on what the song means, I'm probably still in the dark about the meaning of the song other than its about the desert.

Ever since this thread started these lyrics have been running through my head "I'm not aware of too many things but I know what I know if you know what I mean".....dumb dumb dumb.....
I'm going to have to start thinking Christmas carols soon just to get rid of it!

I just remembered my favorite song...and its rather silly lyrics. Jumpin' Jack Flash...our dog's name as a result of our breeder's request that all puppies from that litter have the word Flash in their name. Since my husband's name is Jack...we thought Jumpin' Jack Flash was the perfect name for our pooch.
After naming him (and we call him "Flash") we decided to check out the lyrics to that song. WOW...not exactly a love song! But it is a gas!!!! ;)

I Love the song American Pie. When I had my 1973 Orange/Red Convertible Volkswagen (with the personal license plate "73 BUG") I completely wore out TWO 8-Track tapes of American Pie by Don McLean. If you know all the references in the song it's about the history of Rock and Roll.
Rosanna is one of my least favorite songs. And My Sharona is up there along with one that's lyric is "Bless the Rain Down in Africa" - Maybe that is the ROAR theme song?

Hot Blooded by Foreigner! YUCK!
We had teenagers living a few doors down from us many years ago. Those jerks would blare that song, endlessly, till all hours of the early morning, despite the police coming out numerous times.

And who could forget the Archies. "Sugar Sugar". I never knew anyone who like that song but they played and played it. Then there was "There coming to take me away, ha ha". The the 80's gave us "Thriller", which was really long and really bad..
There was a big fight on which radio station would play the long version of "Light my Fire" We would play "Louie Louie" listening for the 4 letter words and the Beatles song backwards listening for updates on Pauls's demise.
Thank you Kathy, American Pie is an American Classic about the death of Buddy Holly.
Oh Kathy, That was "Toto", Rains down in Africa" One of the MTV better videos.
Maybe I should bring some of these songs on Party. Could make for good trivia.

I have two.
1."The Candy Man" That kind of thing went out with the gingerbread house when we were kids.
2. "My Ding-a-Ling". WAY too much information about Chuck's ding-a-ling.
And, Suzanne, I agree with you about My Sharona. If push came to shove, I'd rather listen to many other songs than this one.

I doubt if there's any secret hidden message about leaving a cake out in the rain!! actually, everyone just thought that he was on some pretty intense acid trip when he wrote that song.. "MacArthur's Park is "melting in the dark " All the sweet, green icing flowing down Someone left the cake out in the rain I don't think that I can take it 'Cause it took so long to bake it And I'll never have that recipe again Oh, no! ..
