I'm thrilled you're getting a kitty! Actually, I think you should get two, since you travel so much they'll keep each other company when you're away.
We have two and think it's the best thing to do. And when you're at home, two cats truly aren't more work than one.
When we travel, we have a catsitter that comes to the house everyday to feed them, clean out the litter box and play with them for a little while.
