Ate there last night with a dear friend from Switzerland who was in for the day. Had the Prime Rib. It was a special, so don't expect it always to be on the menu. It was wonderful! Great food, a good bottle, and a good friend - life is good.
Now we need to do this with this group of good friends!

Denise: 48th & Park is better. But you will still need a cab. The good news is that they will be easier to get!

Sorry to say, we can't change the date. Air, hotel and theater tix are all a done deal.

Gil, This is just a girl's trip. John has to work. Is the show Hairspray really good? Funny? I already have Lion King tickets for the 2nd. Should I try to get Hairspray tickets for the 1st or 3rd? Do you think it would be worth seeing?

Doug - so, how is the Carpetbagger Steak? That sucker looks deadly! (thinking about booking a reservation while in NYC). And do you like your steak with any of the sauces or do you take it straight?

Carpetbagger Steak is fantastic...It's my daughter's favorite. Masaki, Call Michael Waterhouse (one of the owners) personally and tell him Doug sent you. You should get some special attention.

Yes, the Carpetbagger steak is to die for! The oysters add something that cannot be described.

Re: sauces: if you go for a regular steak, I love.. really LOVE... the bourbon sauce.

But always keep an eye open for the specials. I met Bobby, the Chef , today. An amazing talented guy.... nice guy, too!
He served me the staff lunch.... boys & girls, it was so good.... you would have gladly paid good money for it! (& would not have blinked at NYC prices, either!)

You can't go wrong with the Four Seasons. If you go, be sure to reserve a table in the "Pool Room". Table 7 is a good choice for two people.

As for theater choices between "Lion King" and "OZ", I would choose seeing Hugh Jackman's performance in a heart beat over Lion. "Lion King" is replicated in other cities...just saw the production in San Francisco last week. You can't replicate Hugh Jackman's performance.

And "Wicked" is really fun! Seen in twice - SF and NYC. Excellent performances, sets, immaginative book and some good music.

During our last trip to NYC, we ate at Four Seasons. Best meal we had; along with best service. We were not able to get into Pool Room. Are there any tricks to getting a table there?

Incidentally, one of the best deals in Manhattan (if not anywhere) is the prix fixe lunch at Gotham Bar & Grill (only available on weekdays). For $25 you get 3 courses (appetizer, main course, dessert) for some of the best dining in the City. The choices are somewhat limited on the lunchtime prix fixe, but the Roast Atlantic Cod is to die for.

When I think of GOtham Bar & Grill I get nauseous. Had a Closing dinner there several years ago. In a small enclosed r oom, and the Cigars came out. Not enough ventilation. I was sooooo sick! I wasn't the only one.
But the food was superb. I did manage to get there for a lunch one day - meeting a cruise friend (anoter line, shhhh) - to try to overcome my negative feeling about that place. It did - I would go again in a heartbeat.

Gil - I can't believe they allowed cigars in the private room. There's barely any ventilation in there as is!

The trouble with NYC (if one can call this trouble!).... is that there are just too many outstanding places to eat!!!!

I had a fantasy of an unlimited Amex card with the restriction that I could not eat in the same restaurant twice! (makes you hot, doesn't it! - lol)

Are you getting ready for the golf tournament? I used to live in Neptune Beach and sure miss it every year when TPC rolls around.

So many places in NY for Pizza. My recommendation is to find a Brick Oven Pizza place. But compared to almost anywhere else, just go in to any pizza place & it'll beat what you can get at home.

As for Chowhound, it is a really good site. I have gotten good information there. And I am a contributor there as well - have discussed Dylan Prime a few times.

The best pizza I have ever had was in Spain...go figure.
My bride was crazed that i wanted to go back to the same simple place everyday for lunch!
Other than that, almost any place in NYC has better pizza than you are used to.
Yes, some are much better than others. And NYC does have Pizza Huts....sigh.
read the guides & go ahead. Going wrong is almost impossible.... well, I would suggest not going to Olive Garden (even if you are family)

Saltine cracker, smothered in Ragu, with a hint of Cheese Whiz (canned pineapple bits upon request).
