I read on another board that their ship was in a "Code Red." Passengers can't serve themselves, plastic gloves in the gift shop were used.....Sounds ominous. Does this happen often?

You must have been reading the CC HAL board. :) I saw that post regarding the Statendam.

I'll give the same reply here as I did over there. It's a viral outbreak onboard - usually a norovirus outbreak. To stop it from spreading, the crew onboard goes on overdrive cleaning the ship, minimizing passenger physical contact with each other, and quarantining the passengers that are showing symptoms. It probably happens more often than we're aware of since closed environments (like cruises, nursing homes, hospitals) are the easiest places for viruses such as this to multiply. Luckily, they tend not to carry over from cruise to cruise too often.

Hi J,

I found this info on cruise junkie .

May 21 Ryndam Holland America Line According to passengers, a "Code Red" was called the second night of the cruise due to gastro intestinal illness on board. The Spa and the 2 public jacuzzi pools were closed, all meal service was conducted on a strictly controlled access basis - no self serve and staff wore vinyl gloves for practically all tasks. The onboard shops didn't allow passengers to try on any necklaces, watches, or rings. During the cruise, several more obvious crew members became ill - the Piano bar pianist, the Bingo caller/Asst cruise director. While the Captain continued to reassure passengers that no actual problem existed, many passengers were missing from dinner tables and quarantited to their cabins. One staff reported that 50 passengers had reported sick; a passenger heard that as many as 50 crew had become ill. The CDC posted on their site June 7th (dated May 21) that 102 of 1279 (7.97%) passengers and 13 of 570 (2.28%) of crew.

The only mention of a Regent ship is the Marnier on March 9th.

There were quite a few people sick on the Mariner at that time (luckily we were healthy)...but not THAT many. I Certainly would not have considered it an outbreak or code red!!
