I refuse to go on another trip using our 26" pullman with the broken handle (one too many hand pinches). So, my question. How many of you use a rolling duffle bag in lieu of a pullman? My fear is that I will pack too much in it and be overweight (I'm talking about the luggage, not me!).

I've done my research and found the old thread on LCT about luggage (June 2004). It was quite helpful.

I found a Victorinix rolling duffle at T.J. Maxx that I am considering. It looks so big!

Any comments or suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I have a Kipling rolling duffle which we love for cruising.

I bought one to take on our Honeymoon Cruise and it was an unknown brand. It split right next to the zipper and almost ruined our trip. We spent the time in Florida finding a replacement suitcase!!! And we bought the Kipling which looks like new and is lightweight. It's not huge - it's equal to a 25" pullman for space.

In those days, you checked your luggage right through to the cruise, but, we decided to go claim our luggage because we changed planes. My stuff was all over the baggage claim!! I packed in tied plastic grocery bags (this was before 9/11) so that I could just unpack and put the stuff in the drawers on the ship. It was just an experiment to do that but it sure worked. All my shoes and swimsuits for our honeymoon! Yikes!

It's good for things like swimsuits, pillows (we sometimes take one) and shoes and other things you don't care about wrinkling. I like the standard pullmans for things that wrinkle
It's never been overweight. Our pullman (27" had just bordered on overweight at 68 lbs and once I had to re-arrange in the airport. with the 25" to avoid a charge,

My rolling duffle doesn't look anything like Kathy's. Mine looks longer than hers. I hate the one I have. It keeps flipping over, so now it only goes on car trips - which I never take any more, which means, now it sits in a closet.

I've got a Timberland rolling duffel that I use for travel - works fine and I've never gone over on weight either.

I have an Eddie Bauer one that I love. It's good for odd shaped things like swim fins. I usually put my shoes in there too, it keeps them away from my clothes. The weight has never been an issue.

Donna, when we were on PIP we met a couple who each had one rolling duffle bag, plus their carryons. I was so jealous that they had packed so efficiently. All the while, we were rolling and dragging around way too much luggage. It really made me think about looking into a duffle bag for the future. They were able to get so much stuff in the bags and they rolled very easily. Good luck!!

Donna, I recall that Costco had some very cool rolling duffel bags that had compartments and they were reasonably priced. You might look there.

My Daughter and Son in law bought the rolling duffel set at Costco and love them. They have used them for two of their cruises. (So young and already have three cruises under their belts)

Thanks everyone for your opinions. They didn't have the two-piece (large and small one) black duffle at our Costco. They do have one but it's more suited for college, I think.

Looks like we will probably buy a new pullman and a rolling duffle. Alan and I usually check one bag each but the bags are usually VERY heavy. I think I would do better to check two packs with less weight.

Donna, I bought a great system where the bags hand onto one another. This really works incredibly well and you can pack each bag lighter. I often put a filled suitcase into a larger suitcase going and piggyback it going home. This is how I brought home a 6 by 9 Turkish rug last year. We always take a duffle on a cruise. They fold down so nicely and fit under the bed well. Great for shoes, underwear and all things that don't wrinkle.

This thread is over three years old so I am looking for updated advice.

We are looking for very lightweight (key parameter) rolling duffle or tote that we can take with us for short land trips. Needs to be easy to haul onto trains and put in lockers at train stations. We have a cheap samosinite rolling duffle that cost just $29 but it is not very sturdy; we want something that can hold a bit more, sturdy, and just as light.

I just purchased rolling duffle at Target Made by Swiss. 22 inches long and meets the carry on specs and fits perfectly into overhead compartments. Just took it to Vegas for a few days and was perfect $59.95

After consulting with Ngaire, at Xmas time we bought a number of eBags rolling duffels -- a couple of large ones as presents and a couple of small ones to take to Africa this year. I used Skymilesshopping.com and was able to get a huge number of miles, but even now, it's 5 miles per $1. Ngaire said she really liked her eBags duffels; if they're good enough for her, they're good enough for us. See

We bought Samsonite rolling duffles at the Samsonite Outlet Store (for around $79) for GAME. They are sturdy enough and fit in overhead compartment as a carryon. I only have one complaint. I always travel with my laptop which goes in a very large shoulder bag and is sort of heavy. When rolling a carryon, I slip the bag over the handles and let it rest on the end of the luggage so that I don't have to carry the bag. When I do this with the rolling duffle, the bag tends to flip if I'm not careful. One of these days I'll probably break the handle. Otherwise, I'm happy with the bags and they are very lightweight which is why they probably flip with the heavy shoulder bag on top.
