It is sad that we all know that the woman's shelter has an opening already for Christie. Doesn't she know that behavoir-- send her to Oprah or Dr. Phill before she gets married. Thanks for the posting from The Early Show. Very amusing. I will have to watch Entertainment Tonight for sure tonight.

I also, noticed the editing about the clouds! I thought that was kinda strange.
Congrats to Chip and Kim!!

Wasn't it fascinating when two of the teams experienced strategy from other teams, they thought it was "unfair", but when they were dishing out their form of strategy, it was AOK.

I always found it alarming when the teams were encouraging taxi drivers to risk their lives and livelihood to break speeding laws for them.

The cloud editing was pretty funny!

I thought I heard that the new show would not be starting for a while. Are you sure it is starting next month?

Yes Jan, it's probably a good idea to start a new thread!

Marc, the new season was supposed to start in a week or two and it was pushed back a few more weeks.

Great ending and I'm glad that Chip and Kim won but being honest with myself, Colin & Christie really did deserve to win given that they played the game the best overall. Though I have to admit, not sure why Colin guys didn't bother rechecking on their flight to make sure that it wasn't delayed - that was silly of them. Though getting the private car before was really a smart idea ...

Have to say also that Christie turned really irritating in that last episode (or maybe it's just the way it was edited)

Thank Karen - very interesting! I thought Colin & Christie's driver had gotten pulled over for his crazy manuevers.

I had read on another board about the unseen roadblock. What they really need to do is start putting out DVD's!

We're supposed to be getting Tivo-like ability with a new cable box soon - then I can watch, record & rewatch!

Andrea, I was thinking about switching from vcr to dvr (tivo-like ability). Our cable offers dvr and since I have broken 3 vcr this year alone, it might be worth looking into. I think I would need at least 2 dvrs though, you can't record two programs airing at once, can you?

That's the term - DVR! I actually just got off the phone with Comcast. Currently you can't record two programs airing at once, or even watch one program while recording another - if you just have one dvr. They are supposed to come out with one early next year that has both those capabilities.

I went ahead & ordered it since we're going to be gone for 2 weeks in November, and I don't want to miss any of my shows. I believe it has 30 hours of recording time. So, they will be by on Saturday to install, and I can watch, tape & watch AR6!

Andrea, I just checked my cable companys online site. We must have the new type of DVR as we can watch one show and tape the other. Now that I think about it, I would need at least 3 units since we watch taped shows on different tvs around the house.
I couldn't find any price info on the site, I assume the first dvr is free as it said no equipment to buy but I bet other units, there would be a charge.
Did your company tell you what the montly fee for dvr service was?

Do you have Adelphia? They are always so far ahead of Comcast!

It's $9.95 per unit, which I guess isn't too bad. Of course, she tried to upgrade my cable package in the meantime "Did you know you can get all 5 movie channels for only another $13 per month"? Er, thanks, but I'm all set!

Andrea, does that mean that if I wanted an extra dvr, I would have to pay $19.90 extra each month? I suppose I could do a dvr on one tv and vcrs on the other.
And yes, I have Adelphia :)

I think they would charge you for each DVR. They may be cheaper than Comcast though - you should call them & see what they say.

I just called, it's $4.95 a month for the service and $7.95 a month for the equipment. If I wanted a second dvr, it would ber $18 a month for service and equipment.
That wouldn't be a bad deal if you could just buy your own dvr.
It looks like Comcast is a better bargain!

Editing to add, if I felt like switching back to Dish satellite tv, they seem to have the best bargain. Up to 4 dvrs free, with 100 hour capability for each unit. The price for this service is confusing as it starts at $29.95 for the regular cable and at the end of the dvr description, it says this:

* A $4.99 per month additional outlet programming access fee will be charged for each dual-tuner (DISH 322 or DISH Player-DVR 522) receiver. This fee will be waived monthly for each such receiver that is continuously connected to Customer's phone line each month.

All this to make sure I don't miss Amazing Race :)

The Dish satellite does look like the best bargain! However, since we live in a condo/apartment building we can't have a satellite or anything hanging outside of our windows.

I am sort of bummed that it's going to be on Saturday nights. Although, we may end up saving money since we won't be going out to eat!

Andrea, Let's hope they figure out what night AR will be on before you leave!

Postponed and GONE from Saturday Banishment!

Amazing Race Pulled from Saturdays, Heads for Better Slot
The amazing success of The Amazing Race 5 this summer is prompting CBS to yank plans for immediately going into the sixth edition on Saturday nights.
The Eye Network had Race on its original fall schedule for Saturdays at 9, between 48 Hours and a montage of repeats of CBS crime dramas.
Instead, to create a breather for viewers, Race 6 will likely debut in November as a midseason replacement for an early failure on the CBS lineup. The network is targeting a possible return to Tuesdays or Wednesdays.
Chip and Kim McAllister, the popular married couple from Orange County, Cal., won Race 5 Tuesday night and the $1 million jackpot.
In an interview on KCBS News 2 after the show, Kim McAllister said: "This was the honeymoon I never got." Chip McAllister was philosophical about the summer of celebrity: "Stardom, oh yeah, we're big stars....I just need to pay my light bill." Chip also said Kim may get another ring with the money.
Race 5 was the one which finally began to resonate with viewers, averaging more than 10 million viewers a week and cracking the Nielsen top 10 in all but the Olympic weeks before finishing 18th last week.

Karen, you are on top of things! So, it's not going to debut this week? (Running off to make immediate dinner reservations)

So, let's try to guess which show fails!

Karen:

We have time warner cable. The pvr is around $6 per month. The box replaces the previous digital cable box so we don't have to pay two charges. We can tape two shows at once.

It is the best thing....no more wasting time watching live tv (except sports and hurricane coverage)

Just one note about DVRs - the software in the cable company DVRs is markedly inferior to the 2 industry leaders, Tivo and ReplayTV. I would HIGHLY encourage getting one of these 2 rather than the cable company DVRs. Unfortunately, the differences are hard to quantify - let's just say that the user interface is much, MUCH better with Tivo and ReplayTV, being much more polished. But I can understand the price argument as well ...

I would love to have Tivo, but my husband says it wouldn't work properly. With our cable and VCR, the cable box has to be on the same channel that's being recorded. He says the same thing would happen with Tivo - we would only be able to record one channel at a time. Which, of course, is the same thing we're going to have with the DVR until they come out with the one that has dual capabilities. Very confusing!

I had not checked the board all week, and I finally had a chance to see what was going on, and TAE was on FIRE!! Great article Karen!! So, it looks like TV Guide put out an early edition for the next season. If I was running CBS, I would do the same thing. I think by the end of the month, we will have a few shows out of the running and TAE shall return.

Let me get this correct, for a gift to myself, don't get the new dvd recorder?? As I read everyone's remarks, it looks like you can't watch a program and the dvd recorder won't allow you to record another show?

LOL Todd!

Jan, it just depends on your cable company. My company, Comcast, currently doesn't offer the
DVR with dual recording capabilities, but Karen's does (Adelphia). However, Tivo or another company Masaki mentioned actually have a better interface. Probably more user friendly!

Andrea - the advantage of the DVR (Tivo or otherwise) is that you can watch a pre-recorded program while recording a live program. Personally, we almost never watch any TV program "live" any more. We're always busy watching programs that we've stockpiled to watch and recorded on the hard drive. So, the ability to only record one program at a time isn't as restrictive as it sounds. Though having dual show recording capability is always a good thing!

Jan - a DVD recorder is worse since 1) you still have to deal with media (i.e. changing DVDs to record different things) and 2) you can't watch other programs while recording (I don't think at least).

TWIN ALERT!!

Yes, just saw one of the twins (I believe it was Karli) at Davio's restaurant here in Boston. Jerel & I stopped for dinner, and since we didn't have a reservation ate at the chef's counter. During dinner I happened to look at the other end of the counter and did a double take. She was with a very nice looking guy. No, didn't go over & speak with her (I'm a little shy that way - ha!). This was more exciting than when I saw Sammy Hagar at Olives a few years ago!!
