Marsha, "Secret Life of Bees," is one of my all-time favorites. Have your read "Mermaid's Chair?" I didn't like it nearly as well.

If you like Montana, try "This House of Sky." It's an auto-biography by the western writer, Ivan Doig. It made me appreciate the hardy souls who settled in Montana and I learned I would never want to be a sheep herder!

I agree with you on the Mermaid's Chair. So many times you want to follow an author & none live up to the first book. I will still read her next book as I wait for Sue Grafton to come out with T, is it?

Hope you like the Sandford books. If you do, you will have a few to keep you occupied for awhile! The series I like is the "Prey" series. I believe RULES OF PREY is the first book of the series. I'm not sure how many there are now, but I think it must be around 10 or 11.

Just found this thread. Love all the suggestions and have noted them for my next bookstore or library visit. I am also a fan of the Shopaholic Series and Alexander McCall Smith detective books. I have some additonal suggestions:
Our Hidden Lives by Simon Garfield which is a compilation of diaries from post-war Britain, a very interesting read. Also, I love the Philipa Gregory historical fiction books, The Other Boleyn Girl, The Queens Fool, etc. Slightly off topic, but if you know anyone who loses a beloved dog, the following book is a wonderful little gift you could send to the bereaved owner, The Last Will and Testament of a Very Distinguished Dog by Eugene O'Neill. I received this several weeks ago and it was a poignant book that will make any dog owner feel a bit better after they lose their beloved companion.

Pam, Phillipa Gregory has an excellent book called The Little House. It is about a mother in law from hell & the daughter in law's sweet revenge.

Jackie, I like Phillipa Gregory too. "The Little House" sounds like a good read.

How about Nicholas Sparks? It's definitely not deep reading, but I really enjoyed all of his books...Message in a Bottle, A Walk to Remember, the Notebook, the Guardian...etc. They made great movies IMO too. But they are tear-jerker, chick-flick type books.

Oh, and another that I loved would be Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane. It's got a twist at the end that really makes you think. I have recommended it to all my book-lover friends, and they ALL loved it.

It starts out just a bit slow, but picks up pretty quickly.

OK,maybe I'm just getting too many 'senior moments' but so many of the above mentioned books, I say to myself....'oh yeah, that was a good book!' .....but then, for the life of me I can't remember what it was about!! :ohmy: :ohmy: :ohmy:

Bonnie, don't feel bad. I'm in the same club. It's so bad that I started a database on my computer that includes a mini-book review for each one so I won't read the same book twice!

My mom, coworkers and I are all in the same boat. We initial in the front of books so that we can remember that we already read the book! :)

Yes, Bonnie! And I hate to admit, that I have bought a book in paper back, only to realize that I already bought and read it in hard back, a while ago! Oh my!! ;)

Now that we are confessing our confusion, how many of you have started or, worse, jumped into the middle of a TV show or a movie & kinda think you saw it before but have no idea what it is about nor how it ends?

OMG Jackie, not only do we have the same name, we have the same affliction! I love the Law and Order (original series) shows. I watch the reruns all the time and I get about 20 minutes into the show and tell my husband "I've seen this one", but I'll be darned if I can remember how it ends (until about 5 minutes before the end and it all comes back to me!) It's kinda scarey!!!! haha

Editing to say: This is pretty ambitious considering I only read at bedtime and on trips. I better start traveling!!

Donna, excellent reading. I especialy liked Curious Incident of Dog & Traveling Mercies. Read Wedding on Baltic cruise. Anita's best book is still the Pilot's Wife followed by Light on Snow. I can't resist the books at Costco either. The Morman book is also very very readable.

I highly recommend The Time Traveler's Wife.

Now if I could just remember the titles of all the books that gave me so much pleasure in the very recent past.

I am wondering on long cruises how you can pack enough books. Especialy the world cruisers. Do you pass your books amongst each other?

The ships have libraries. Plus, I don't read as much as I think I will on cruises, too many other things to do! Most of my reading gets done coming and going on the plane.

Editing to add: I agree with you that "Pilot's Wife" is Anita's best one. Will have to read "Light on Snow."

I don't 'like to be dependant on the libraries. I have gotten some great reads from them but not enough for the whole cruise.
