Just picking up reports that P&O's World Cruise ship Aurora, broke down just after leaving Sydney and drifted in the Tasman Sea overnight. She is heading for NZ and was to have called at Wellington and Napier before arriving in Auckland. She is now limping direct to Auckland for an extended stay ,of at least 2 days, where repairs will be carried out.
It must be a cruise lines worst nightmare to have to carry out repairs on the other side of the world.

David - thanks for the information. That's bad news, indeed. Hope they arrive safely & have a quick repair.

This triggered a memory of an early problem on Aurora. As is my wont, I figured it was about three years ago. Ha! So much for my memory. Dateline 2000

Hi Anne
Yes I remember that . We had friends that were to join it in Sydney and sail back to Southampton, but it never arrived.
Gosh, was it really that long ago? Like you I would have said only a year or two ago.
Where are the years going?

just an update..
Aurora made it safely to Auckland last night and wil spend Saturday and Sunday in port undergoing repairs ,then leave on Monday at midday.....
3 days late, providing all is well.
Next stop is supposed to be Bay of Islands, but they are offering passengers coach trips up there on Sunday, so it looks like that call may be missed in order for them to catch up time.
Engineers have been flown out from Germany to undertake the repairs.
Lets hope it all goes well.
Wouldn't it be dreadful to be on a World Cruise only to have it cancelled half way through and then have to fly all the way home.

a further update on the stranded World Cruisers.

Aurora has now been in Auckland for 6 days undergoing repairs .
They had a sailaway party last night as they were due to get away then, but have now developed an oil leak which means another day in port.
Reports are coming through of very disgruntled passengers and the head of P&O UK has flown out and is on board trying to smooth things over .
They have certainly had a good look around our City, as free tours were put on for them, and they have hit the shops like crazy.
As well as missing future calls in the Bay of Islands and Tahiti, they will be a day late into SF and the Panama Canal.
Lets hope they get away tonight and are able to continue their World Cruise without further incident.
