I almost bought some Repel 100% Deet yesterday. It is in a little 1 oz. pump bottle. I read somewhere that it is really good, but doesn't smell very good.

For Kathy Z - hope you see this. I re-read a post from the boards of tahiti-explorer.com where the topic was a product called "Buggspray" that is vanilla scented. You said you were going to try it out on your last PG cruise. Did it work and do you recommend it?

Wendy, you had mentioned "Off Skintastic". I saw that at the grocery store, along with "Deep Woods Off".

Here is a link to that post. It has a lot of good info on bug repellent.

http://www.tahiti-explorer.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php/ubb/get_topic/f/10/t/001723.html

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Off Skintastik. Just the everyday variety, I usually use the spray.

The bugs are not killers over there, no need for industrial strength. But then again, I have almost never needed anything.

There's also a Monoi-oil with insect repellant for sale everywhere in FP. I used that once on an excursion--it was nice, but oily.

The main times are on the *very odd* excursion where you're in jungly environments, or at the beach where there could be sand fleas or midges.

Do you know if your OWB on Bora Bora has screens? You may not need them there at all, depending on trade-winds, but then again you might, don't know.

Others may have different advice, but I don't believe the high DEET content is required.

Thanks for the tip!

Last week I bought a 4 oz. bottle (pump spray) of Avon Bug Guard Plus IR3535, gentle breeze scent. It also has a SPF of 15. After reading the thread about Buggspray, I have ordered 2, 4 oz. bottles of the vanilla scented 25% deet. Nothing like being prepared! I came home from DDD with over 50 bites on my legs. Don't want that to happen again!

Suzanne, we used the small buggspray for two weeks on the PG in march..only used it for the hike from hell in Raitea on the second sunday..altho the no no's can be bad on the motu..if you go all the way to the left off the pier on the water's edge you should do fine...zero bites and we have 3/4 of the bottle left...have fun..r/wes

We took both the buggspray and 100% deet but did not need them in FP on our trip. We were sitting down by the water and not near the trees on the Motu. I've used the buggspray at home and it does not work quite as well as 100% deet but it sure smells better!

The only issue with bugs that we had was after about 2:30 on the Motu when the no nos came out -I wish that we had brought something to keep them off!

There is a
deet
wipe cloth that is better than that icky spray smell.. and do not go into any of the island stores and spray that hideous aloha sent on yourself.. that will bring the real BIG no nos right at ya..

The CDC just approved two new DEET-free bug sprays just in time for the start of the West Nile season. Ever since I saw that 60 Minutes segment on DEET and how is can cause seizures, I have alway been leary of using it.

Karen - I just read your article and the Cutter name sounded familiar. It turns out that we already have that one!! We bought it for our Hawaii trip 12/01. Never used it, though. I pulled it out just now and sprayed it on my arm. It is UNSCENTED and it did NOT have a scent. Here is the link to their website:

http://www.cutterinsectrepellent.co... 1F3EFF%7d&NRCACHEHINT=NoModifyGuest

The one I have is the Cutter Outdoorsman Insect Repellent - Unscented. It is an aerosol can - 6 oz. I see by the price tag still on it, that I bought it at Big 5 sporting goods store.

Based on what Karen's article says and everyone else's input here, I think I'm going to stick with the Cutter, especially since it has no smell at all! But I also think I'm going to bring one of the Repel 100% Deet - JUST IN CASE!!! It is a very small container and won't take up much room.

One of the best known repellents is Avon Skin-so-soft bath oil. Just put in on your exposed parts!

I've used it for years on the dogs for flea repellent and it works well. Now I use Advantage, but, I don't think that's a good one for us for FP

I was just wondering - if the Cutter repellent is unscented - how does it repel the mosquitos, etc.?

Maybe it's only unscented to us?

Good answer, Suzanne!

I also will probably take a little tube of "After Bite", which is a roll-on product that takes the itch out of any bites that you might get. It's just ammonia, but works very well (and in a pinch will work as smelling salts!) I have always got two or three tubes lying around since it is essential at the cottage in summer, especially for kids.

I think we should open a small stall on the motu and offer our services (for a large price) to all the non LCT PiPsters who come unprepared!

Bugspray with deet, without deet, scented like vanilla, unscented (to us), repellent with SPF, sunscreen with SPF from 15 to 50, afterbite relief...We will have it all!!!

Suzanne - great idea!!! That way, when we decide we have brought WAY TOO MUCH we can unload some of it on others :D Also, you may be right about the spray being unscented only to us.

Wendy - you are always full of great ideas & tips. Thanks so much.

Wes, Kathy Z, Ken, Claudia, Kathy, Karen & Suzanne - thanks so much for all your input and tips here. You are all so helpful. What would I do without you?

When I was playing golf early morning in Jasper Park Canada the starter makes everyone put on 100% deet (I had my own) he said it was the only thing that really works ,I agree. You can not spray very close or get alot on fabric will actually burn a hole .Always leave perfume, hair gel and hair spray off for the day.Take b6 every day to help from the inside out.It all works! On my recent trip to Kenya, I took the little spray bottle of Repel 100% Deet that Cyndi mentions above. It does not smell nice AT ALL, but I did not have a single issue with bug bites. Granted, believe it or not, I did not really encounter that many bugs. Or maybe I just was soooo unappealing to them with my 100% Deet that they stayed miles away. Our tour escort, who used to live in South Africa, used this all natural bug spray that she swears loves and it smelled much nicer. I don't remember the name, but I have sent her an email asking her to let me know. When she responds, then I will share her secret.

Julie - great to hear from you!!! Thanks for your help. Will look forward to hearing about the "secret" spray. I'm taking the Repel 100% Deet, along with that Cutter unscented spray - just in case!!

Macy - thanks for the tips. I've heard that deet will take off your nail polish and ruin clothes. That doesn't sound like fun. I'll try to be careful.

Gee, ruined nail polish? Skin-so-soft bath oil doesn't do that. Off and Cutter spray either.

Off and Cutter I definitely keep away from nail polish, as it makes it sticky. Skin-so-soft okay, but it is not effective for me to ward off the bugs, at least the ones at Assateague National Park!

Olivia, I tested the Cutter on one of my nails and it did leave it sticky. But once it dried it was O.K. Of course, this spray can is about 3 years old. I'm assuming that it must have lost some or all of it's effectiveness, so I'm going to get a new can before I go.

Kathy, I have heard about Skin So Soft. I'd love it's scent, but still not convinced it will be strong enough.

It makes me wonder if there is deet in my cat's Advantage. Everytime I apply it to my cats, it ruins my nail polish. How could that possible be good for the cats?????

Hold this thought: whatever kind of bug spray you bring, you will never need to use it!

Cyndi, are you in an OWB at the Hotel BB? Have you read or heard of bug problems there? I wouldn't worry about it too much, really.

Wendy - I've never heard any reviews say that HBB has any bug problems. Yes, we are in an OWB. I called their marketing director (in Los Angeles) the other day and forgot to ask her about screens. I can email her. But I think you are right that we won't have to worry too much!! I like your positive thoughts - "No Bugs, No Bugs, No Bugs. . . ." :)

Depending on how the trade winds blow through the hotel, I'm betting you will be just fine. The trades blow from the east, if I remember correctly, and your hotel is more or less on the south-western tip of the island.

At the Manini Pearl, the grounds of the hotel were sprayed for mosquitoes every day! But on the water, there would never be a problem, because the tradewinds were just blowing away!

Ah, doesn't that sound nice! Do you know what you're going to do while in BB before the cruise?

Cyndi, there's an interesting thread about "mozzies" on BB at tahiti-explorer. Try this URL:

http://www.tahiti-explorer.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php/ubb/get_topic/f/4/t/001186.html#000001

It says basically that the mosquitoes can be bad at the airport! But several people reported none in the OWB at Hotel BB.
