Looks like I am going to have problems using Delta miles for Spice biz flights. Of the various "services" that help with using frequent flyer miles, who is best for using Delta miles?

thanks,

I don't know who the best is Marc, but we have used Ben or Jimmy at Pointspros a couple of times and been very happy with their services.

Also don't know about Delta, other than what I have read on the board recently........good luck. All of the airlines are making it harder and harder to use their points, especially on international travel and partners. Its a bit depressing, more points, less seat availability and not a lot of help.

Marc, I have only used Ben and/or associates at Points Pros lately. I don't think any of them "likes" Delta, but I have turned Amex Points into Delta to get into their consortium in the recent past, I think for Air France. I have also used Gary Leff of milepoints in the past with great satisfaction. Points Pros are just a little less expensive for solo flyers. I would not hesitate using either. I start out by telling them every point I own.

Delta is difficult unless you have millions of miles to burn. You can find availability but at a very high price. If you can find availability with one of delta's partners or find a creative routing, it will help.

That's what I've found. Using partners is fine. One time, going from one continent, and coming back from another, I had to burn 2x miles, full RT for each. I think I'm not the only one who has done this, on my own. Using the points guys, I have found it much better. They know what to do with your other points when one-ways are allowed.

We don't have that many Delta points (maybe 80,000) but have not had any luck using them even domestically. Not sure what to do with them before they expire, wish I could give them to you Marc. Not allowing one ways is terrible!

Marcie- don't let them expire. Just buy 1,000 or 2,000 miles ( whatever the minimum purchase is) to have qualifying activity in your account.

They expire. You have to have activity every so often.

Hmmm.... Helen might be right! Their website does have some statements that appear to not have any asterisks or fine print next to them: "Under the SkyMiles Mileage Expiration policy, miles do not expire" and "Did you know we’re the only major U.S. airline without mileage expiration? " Cool

I have heard from some people I traveled with recently to SE Asia that Delta is horrible for redeeming miles for a reasonable amount. Rather doesn't matter if they don't expire if you can't use them for international Business class.

I'm just letting Regent do my air as I'm "mile poor" at the moment. Star Alliance Silver gets you a bag tag...and that's about it.

I have succesfully used Delta miles for Intl Biz class many times. Usually I end up on their partners KLM or Air France but I have no quarrel with that!

I am presently sitting on 2 RT Business class LAX -Beijing and return Hong Kong to LAX for 120k miles per. I must admit tho that when I tried to get this myself it was 240k per ticket but Ben from Points Pros got it for me for 1/2 that. Thanks again, Ben!

Hoping we will run into a few "Pagodans" in Beijing!

Peggy found Super pricing right now on QATAR and EMIRATES for the flight home from CPT to the USA. Sale that goes through 2/11/14. I think these airliines must be in a price war too as we checked KLM and it was more than twice the price.

We are putting our miles back into the account and buying our air. They are using the rand as the originating fare and the $ is so strong against rand.
Ker & Downey sells air and we have used them before to buy our air. So I checked with David Jones (the big cheese) and he has the pricing below in BUSINESS. Connections on to other cities could be quoted by them too or done independently I just asked for DFW.

Of course you can buy this directly from the airline. Pricing should be the same - your choice. I like to be able to call K&D in Houston if I have an issue and let them handle it. Rather than on line or on the phone with the airlines where you often have horrendous wait times. Pros and Cons to each situation a personal choice.

He said the exchange rate will affect final price. I asked David to give us the contact in his air department and that is Cheri Whatley email cwhatley@kerdowney.com

Bottom line these are great prices AND you will get an air credit for the coach portion from Regent probably about $500 as well. Do not know that on the Mariner and just wanted to get this information out. We are cancelling our FF tickets and buying Qatar (we are One World Alliance) Emirates might be better for United Flyers.

QATAR

About $2000 per person

Leave CPT at 6.30 pm Arrive Doha at 6.30 am
Nice short connection time
Depart Doha 8.10 am
Arrive DFW 3.15 pm

EMIRATES
Emirates about $200 more per person approximate times Ken did not write it down.

Depart CPT 1.30 pm
Arrive Dubai 1.30 pm
Nice short connection time again.
Depart Dubai - 3.00 am
Arrive Dallas - 9.00 am

Hope some of you are able to secure these flights we have ours on hold while we cancel our FF tickets.

Wow, Kathy, this is a lot of miles. Had an offer last night from my points guys, but to Dubai, and then home from Cape Town for 150K with AF and Virgin, and that was a lot in my mind. Last time I used Delta miles, I used that airline to get to Africa, and had to pay double points, two "zones". Never again with flying on Delta, I'd rather use the partners.

I've always heard that getting flights to Australia are the hardest. That was one of the few flights I ever used Regent Air. But of course, you are on a land trip, so not possible.

$2258 to fly from CPT to Houston in business on Emirates! Unfortunately getting to Dubai from Houston is at least twice as much so it won't save me any money over using Regent air.

You might want to check with AMEX if you have a platinum card for the 2 for 1 price if you are traveling as a couple. We are traveling on BA ATL/LHR/DXB and on BA CPT/LHR/DXB

Lauri,

You can do Regent ONE WAY and get a non use air credit for the leg you do not use. Regent IAH to DUBAI and then use Emirates coming home if that works out better for you.

However, probably not such a great savings for the bottom line and you get the transfers with Regent. The value here is using miles for USA to DUBAI and then using this fare war with Emirates and Qatar.

Interesting idea...but it really wouldn't save me much and I'd lose the transfers.

If only I had the miles to get to Dubai. Regent air has worked out very well for me in the past so I'll stick with it.

I waited up SO long tonight to hear from my points guy, did not want to miss confirming anything he could find right away, and he came through.

Finally, I heard from Jordan at points pros, and he got me just what I wanted, into Dubai late on November 18, and out of CPT via LHR on Virgin after the cruise on Dec. 21. Trying to meet up with Peggy and Jerry on that date in November, so he had to start all over again with a day earlier departure.

I am happy, but will pay the price tomorrow as it is so late!

Just got off phone with Delta. For just 150K each, we have business class

Huntsville - Atlanta - Paris - Dubai arriving on 19 November.

For return, we have to spend one night in Cape Town, then

Cape Town - London on Virgin Atlantic,

then three days in London for Christmas, then

London - Atlanta - Huntsville on 26 December.

cheer dance cheer

Nice, Marc! Delta's miles are not referred to as Sky Pesos for nothing but I, at least, think that is great deal.

You are right, Ngaire, when we book a cruise with you, we just send you an email and it is DONE. Then the hard part starts for those of us who want to use the points we hoard so carefully just for this purpose.

haha, Helen, at least Marc did not have to pay the fee for someone to deal with it. I went on Delta several times yesterday to see what was available, and every single time, I got timed out. Call??? that is what drove me to others in the first place. getting one agent after another who didn't know what they were doing.

As I get older, I just figure those young guys who do this are worth their weight in gold! But I do hate trading my Amex MR's to "sky pesos". But I think all the airlines are devaluing our points these days.

Any type of international flight I will be using the points pro or one of these services, I know I have cost myself Hundred of thousands of miles by not using them in the past.. The wasted time on the computer and the phone is endless, and My time is far more valuable than the cost of the service.. They know the game and are computer guys and I am not.. Money more than well spent...

Olivia, I had it a bit easier because I am still Platinum which means no waiting on hold and getting experienced agents that are trying to help. It would be interesting to calculate dollars spent on air with an airline versus the value of award tickets. If you work it right, you can get PM on Delta for under $5000 (as long as you spend $25K on their credit card). I have been very pleased with award travel i have booked on Delta. Except for Kangaroo where it was almost last minute, all my international travel has been at lowest award level.

I haven't used them yet but I'm ready too! I would like to use my BA miles for a land trip to the UK. It has to be BA metal because I have an Avios 241 coupon I want to use. And my dates aren't flexible. Is that too narrow to give to them? There's not even one seat available on the BA website. Can they find three seats that aren't visible on the web site? If there is a chance they can I will submit it to them

Marc;

Glad to hear you have good luck with Delta. I seem to call like 30 times before I get an agent with a brain on the phone. except for my Alitalia direct flight to Boston last year in Biz Class, Delta really has not worked that well for me. My Platinum status expires at the end of Feb and I am kicked down to Silver. I obtained all my status by CC spend actually made Diamond one year by doing so but was not able to take advantage of any of the perks..

I figure at this stage of my life I will just earn SPG points or Amex reward points and just transfer into the airline I want to take and just redeem Biz class when I can..

I think Olivia and I are still Scorned from the South Africa trip when Delta got us for the open Jaw and really got us good....

Just booked Qatar out of CPT Dec. 21 and saved a good sum of money over Regent business. Emerarites was about 400 more. The jump to other was almost 2000. Ngaire, thanks for the info. One happy camper.

Now on to arranging visas...

My Regent invoice indicates you'll need visas in Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique in addition to India. The Indian visa is the only one you have to get in advance, the others you can get on arrival. The invoice also says you'll need a Yellow Fever Vaccination.

Julie, they don't get paid if they can't find what you want within your parameters. Just specify what you want, if your dates are narrow then it is what it is. They have always found me seats that I can't find. I used to try to do it all myself, just not worth it. I don't have a clue how they see what I can't, but they do.

Marc, your status that makes your ease of communicating with them is well deserved. But I would never spend 25K on my Delta card again. First time I used it since Samba when I got "burned" by paying double, and that was only to pay the taxes because points pros booked through Delta, and I transferred miles from other sources.

Just easier for me to have the flexibility to move miles to several airlines through my Amex cards, but I still use my US Air card the most, which will eventually all go to American. I dream of the day when I can get a flight again from my regional airport and not have to drive 3-4 hours to start and end a cruise.

I just finished packing for PAGODA, and will start my journey tomorrow up to Annapolis area to visit my 4 children and 5 grands for a send off dinner. Then to DCA-JFK-HKG late Sunday! So ready to be on the Voyager again. Haven't been on her in 3 years.

This is too funny: Just when I walk away from Delta and put focus on AA and other cards, Delta comes through with two low level award Biz Tickets for Both our October Italy/France trip and our Feb/2015 Australia trip.. Unbelievable.. I did use Ben from Pointspros on the Australia trip and they came through.. I did look online and of course Delta search engine was working properly and probably could of done it myself but I have said NO MORE! I will just pay the fee..

Olivia you can appreciate this one after we got soaked ON Samba!!! Roundtrip Biz to Australia for less points then when we did Samba. No logic to this at all..

We are finding NZ and Australia very difficult now with FF miles.

Frank is right about Virgin Australia. This was quite a while ago. We has Qantas tickets but wanted to change dates. No way on Qantas. Someone mentioned Virgin Australia (maybe Frank) and we had not looked at Virgin Australia before or even realized they flew there and we were surprised to find availability there. We ended up staying with our original plans so did not use Virgin Australia but I had never even thought about that airline. Another good choice to consider.

I was able to get to New Zealand in feb. Using aa miles on Fiji airlines. For the return from Melbourne Australia, I actually contacted the points guys, and they told me what I had found on my own was fine, and that they could not do better. So we are on Qatar from Melbourne to DFW. I was proud that I was able to find at least as good of a deal as they could. And that they were honest about it!

I really believe sometimes is a hit or miss. computer/phone call even the points guys. I actually did better with my own option than the ones they came up with for France/Italy but it all takes times I guess you have to weigh the options..

I knew one thing I didn't want to lose direct flights Lax-Syd and then Brisbane to LAX ,and the Virgin Business product looks pretty good as well.. 160k Delta miles roundtrip per ticket.

For OneWorld awards, I second Rachel's suggestion of Fiji Air for New Zealand. We are working on award tickets for early 2015, and I've found decent business class availability. We had an awful flight in coach to Fiji on the old Air Pacific (prior to rebranding) and said "never again," but the business class on their new Airbus planes looks like a pretty good option. A stopover in Fiji on the way home from NZ sounds great, too! I've been wanting to go to NZ for a long time.

Qantas has to be the hardest airline on which to use points. I had the choice of one flight from NY to Sydney in the month of September (business class). Couldn't find one to fly out on so am flying United with Michael's points - sons come in handy now and then!

You are right, but delta requires 160k points, and I burned down my Amex points for last reward for China in November. Trying to see what I can do with Chase SP CC now and buying a few more. Unfortunately I cannot run any business charges thru cc's as I don't have a biz. Good in some ways, not in others!

Another option is using US Air miles and going the other way. Qantas or Qatar airlines New York London/Dubai to Australia..

110k miles per ticket I believe.. A little longer but another option..

Great thought Frank, but I don't think USAirways miles "work" anymore? oh my, maybe I'd better ask my points guy. How in the heck did you find this??? I'm pretty desperate, as my new Chase Sapphire points bonus (for Delta) won't work this month.

One of the points guys wrote a really interesting column recently about using USAirways miles now that they are part of OneWorld. I had no idea about all the routing restrictions AA imposes, but it sure sounds like USAirways miles have a lot of value for routing possibilities.

Woo hoo! Emirates is going to start flying the A380 to Houston so I'll be able to check out business class on both the 777 and A380 on my trip home.
