If you are lucky enough to be cruising during the month, please list your cruise and the date and we will do our best to stalk you along your journey to get a glimpse of your ship. Please list your dates and ports.

We are on Silversea Explorer from Churchill Manitoba to Kangerlussauq Greenland Aug 25-Sept 8. Doubt that any of the "ports" we will visit have a webcam! Anyway, we are visiting Baffin Island and Greenland, and my husband is over the top excited. I am just going for the ride since I hate cold. This has always been on his bucket list.

And we will be on the Silversea Explorer cruise right before Rachel and Helen from Reykjavik to Churchill.

Before we board we are spending a week exploring south and east Iceland.

Penny and I will be 10 days on the Voyager (Aug. 4-14), on a Baltic cruise from Stockholm to Copenhagen with three days in St. Petersburg. This is the "Broadway on the HIgh Seas" Cruise for 2013, sponsored by Playbill, with Broadway stars Patty Lupone and others providing the entertainment and fellowship. Should be a great time!

Helen, several of the stops are on/near Baffin Island. On the map, it is that big island where Cape Dorset is located.

We were on the Mariner with Playbill from Buenos Aires to Rio. Their contract with Regent was that 4 of their performances had to be open to the whole ship, so you may or may nor see the Patty Lupone show. They had the theater privately most nights and we only saw the minor acts, so we just had JAR cabarets in Horizons. At least, we had Nature's Rhythm to enjoy. The Playbill group on our cruise were obnoxious, thinking they were better than the rest of us,demanding extra reservations in P7 & Signatures, wore tee shirts & baseball hats into Compass Rose at night and said "Do you have any kind of entertainment when we aren't here?" Other guests and staff were very happy to see them debark so we could enjoy the rest of our cruise. I hope your experience is better. Please report on LCT.

Will do, Jim...that experience is always the risk with "celebrity" cruises. I know some people are booking this cruise specifically for the Broadway feature...we are not, and did not even know about it when we booked last year. So we will see!

Rachel and Helen: i found that map by googling, but it was not on the Silversea site. I wish they would provide one. Other than the general direction we are going it is difficult to figure out exactly whe we are stopping for our zodiac excursions.

Tim: please do report back. I have been tempted by the Bway cruises every time I see them advertised in a Playbill. I am stunned to read of Jim's poor experience. Hope that your trip is much better and that you can recommend this trip in the future.

Leslie: Thanks a bunch. I tried to google this as well but got maps that were so small I could not see anything.

Rachel, so glad to hear that Baffin is still there as I know that is what George particularly wanted to see.
I just want to see the polar bears and Beluga whales!

I was not that keen on my Playbill cruise. Lovely to see Patricia Neal, but the groups were really kept separate and there was not as much theatre as I expected.

Leslie, I loved seeing your map!

Helen, I hope you can find the same for your trip! Trying to figure out if either is a BKcruise, having never been to either area.

Not escorted Olivia but I have people on both trips. I saw those cruises the second Silversea released them but that was TOO LATE to get a group contract as they sold right away.

I had a plan to do the same thing in 2014 but they did not offer this route again. Instead they did the NorthWest Passage and I have a group on that and I am even more excited about that trip.

This area of the world I really love, the two Arctic trips I took sparked my interest and I love to go this region now.

I will be awaiting all the reports from both Arctic cruises as we will be sailing with Ngaire next year on Silver Explorer. Really interested in seeing photos; especially of walrus and narwhal and polar bears.

We are doing land cruise this August - England and Scotland.

I will be reporting as usual, provided I can get the Internet to work. The website says we do not need our muck boots for this one, just hiking boots. I ordered our parkas yesterday.

Thanks for mentioning the parka order, Rachel - I forgot all about that.

I am surprised about the boots, although I am thrilled that we can wear hiking boots instead! I would assume we are taking the zodiacs ashore though, so how will we land with just hiking boots?

I bought a Canon SX50 with a 50x zoom for the trip so hopefully we will get some good shots for you Marc.

They have mud boots that you will be issued and store in the mud room. They are high top - almost up to your knees. Bring a large ziplock bag to put your camera and lens in while the zodiac is running through choppy waters between the ship & landing spots.

I don't know if this applies here, but we were in Iqaluit, Baffin Island in September 16, 2010 and again this April 12 to the 15th visiting our son.
It was -30 C(that's 22 below Zero F). Bright blue skies and very sunny. It was the wind chill that made it so cold.It was "ToonicTime" with dog sled races, bannock making, igloo building, snowmobiling.

In September it was cool and overcast. If I remember correctly, it was muddy, so we wore boots.

In August it will be quite warm(still need a light jacket or sweater for us southerners) and sunny.

The museums are very good.

The Soap Stone carvings are beautiful and reasonably priced.
Actually, you will be approached by local Inuit carvers, selling their own work. this is where you be able to negotiate a bit...they are not aggressive and if you say no thank you, they will leave you alone.

I have some great shots but i cant post them...Maybe Leslie you can if I send them to you.

I wish we were with you on this one as we would love to visit Churchill in the summer to be able to see the Beluga whales and visit the Prince of Wales Fort.

Cheers

Sure - send them to me Pat and I will post them for you.

Jim - I know they have the boots on board but they specifically put rubber boots on the gear/packing list list for the Arctic and Antarctica trips, but for Greenland/Canada they just specify hiking boots,.

Here are Ray and pat's photos from Iqualit, Baffin Island:

(looks a lot like Longyearbyen...without the mountain and mines)

First 1st photo, from plane, is of Iqaluit and 2nd is at the Sylvia Grinnell Park Reserve in Sept. 2010.

Ray, George and I have our muck boots. Do you think we should bring them even though they are not on the listed equipment and clothing list? They do take up a bit of room packing, but I don't want cold wet feet.

Well they do have the boots on board - I don't understand why they don't publicize that. It was the same when we did the Arctic trip a few years ago - they encouraged people to bring them but had a full supply on board, which we used rather than buy and bring them.

Rachel and Leslie: I find this on the SS website when I log into"My Cruise"

Additional Items Needed for Polar Voyages

Insulated parka/ski jacket, down or synthetic — able to accommodate your sweater/jumper underneath. For guests sailing aboard Arctic, Antarctic and Chilean Fjords expedition cruises, please be sure to select the size for your complimentary parka at Silversea’s Expedition Gear Shop.
.....

Waterproof, knee-high, rubber boots (wellies) with non-slip soles.

I have Wellies from my Antarctica trip so I guess I will bring them along.

They have separate lists for Arctic and Greenland and Canada.

The list for our cruise just specifies hiking boots, but I think we will probably need the rubber boots. I may buy some but I think that we will plan on using the ones on board; that worked out fine for us when we did the Arctic trip a few years ago.

I finally heard from my friend who was on SS Explorer in Iqaluit a couple of years ago and she said all you need are hiking boots and that the ship has rubber boots(or wellies?) they can lend if needed....Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info, Pat and Ray. I think if I am under the luggage weight reqm'ts I will take the boots and otherwise just wear hikers. Before such sites as this, how did we ever know what to do?????

Helen, when we were there for the first time in September 2010, it was cool and a bit of rain, but I mostly remember the muddy roads as there are no paved sidewalks and only 20 miles of paved roads.

If you get a chance to eat in Iqaluit, they actually have a couple of good restaurants.....especially good is the Arctic Char which I loved and Ray loved the Caribou steaks..
Cheers,

Thanks, Ray. Will take hiking shoes but no boots. The weight limit thing for luggage is a bit of a challenge.

George is a big hunter of wild game, so at any given time, we have a variety of elk, antelope, venison in the freezer. We have even had moose, but no caribou (yet). I wouldn't write it off, but the arctic char really is yummy.
My son's girlfriend told her mom about our freezer--"mom, they have all these different wild animals in their freezer".

We're sailing on the Navigator from Vancouver to New York, Aug. 21-Sep. 23 with various ports in Alaska, west coast of the U.S. (Astoria, San Francisco), various ports in Mexico and Costa Rica, the Panama Canal, Cartegena, Cayman Islands, Ft. Lauderdale, Charleston, New York. Love not having to take any loooooong flights for this one.

Peggy: Your cruise sounds great. We are thinking of doing San Francisco to New York next year as we are on DOLPHIN this year. I am disappointed though as I thought you were too - you're still on the 'passenger list'. Lee

Leaving for Reykjavik on Wednesday. Here's a map of our driving plans in south and east Iceland before we board the Silver Explorer on August 7.

We plan to spend one night in Skogar, two nights in the Skaftafell National Park and two in the east fjords, in Seyðisfjörður. Flying back to Reykjavik for an overnight before the cruise departs.
