Ralph:
This sounds like a true delight! Sadly, we will not be there with you. We have J'burg in our sights for the days prior to the camps.
That being said, I expect a full report about the special places you get to when our paths cross on this trip!
To anyone else who may be at La Rez w/ Ralph.... trust him and book with him. You cannot go wrong.

Another option and one that makes some sense, given the lunch on 4/29 could be quite substantial is to eat at La Residence. They do a very nice dinner, per Ngaire and also Eugene. As we leave on 4/30 this might be an option.

Another is to let all do as they might choose, a clear option no matter what some of us may do, and leave Friday open for each to make their own dinner plans.

Just need input, and did not want to make plans such as suggested without giving all a chance to participate.

what a lovely surprise to get home and find this wonderful box from Brown and Keene and K&D!!! such nice little things, I have taken the big book Ngaire sent us out of the packing list and replaced it with the very nice packet from K&D. Clearly K&D is the class act we have always been told they are. Thanks you Ngaire. Pins are on the hats!!

We all need to put in our special ju-ju for Ngaire to see " Wild Dog". I for one would like to also see Cheetah, I would even trade a few elephant sightings for one or two Cheetah sightings. Less than three weeks to go.

Pleasent travels to all.

I must have been on the right Range Rover, as we had a great Cheetah sighting on Roar 2! I took so many pictures of him, as did everyone in the vehicle. He was sitting on top of a mound, just posing away forever. And then we saw another "house pet" cheetah (well, the ranger knew the whole "family") one day when we were out and about, but this one was behind some reeds.

Re: Cheetahs & wild dogs.
That is one of the wonderful things about these trips. We all leave from the lodge at about the same time and often have very different experiences and sightings. Many times we've gotten back to see that one group saw a bunch of something while another group never even caught a peek.
Even with all the ranger's communication devices, luck plays a huge part. What fun!

Still waiting for our package, tho. (grumble, grumble)

Doug

PS: for those of you who have received the package, is an S Africa electric plug adapter included? If not, I need to order one asap. I have one, but with our cameras & computers, two is better.

Yup ,there is one Doug....breathe easy....See you in Joberg on the 30th.
P.S. Not going to take a computer this time....will do it the old fashioned way and keep notes, etc.
Bought a new point and shoot as well, a Canon G12.
So far it seems OK....Will still take the rebel though.

Thanks, Pat.
I always download my cards after each drive.
Back-up is my mantra after I lost a whole card worth of pictures on Roar 1.

So, I will have the computer & an external hard drive. Add in 3 or 4 cameras & the second plug becomes very needed, indeed.

See you soon! Best to Ray!

Gee, Olivia, Kim (& Alice) and Marcie & Tom: Just some of the people who make these trips so much fun!

YES, you will each be missed! But, only because I must -you understand- I shall do my best to still have a good time.

Doug, when I find that money pit I've been looking for, I shall return to ROAR! For now, I count myself over the top lucky to have 3 cruises this year. I will be happy just to enjoy ROAR vicariously this time!

Wow, three cruises! I have to tell you, I just found our invoices for Roar 1 and 2 and and I think that, together, they were less than ROAR 3. This may be ROAR final final for us! It was a shocker!

Andi got to remember for your safari costs

Roar - 4 nights on safari
Roar 2 - 7 nights on safari
Roar 3 - 11 nights on safari

It is every SAFARI night that adds significantly to the cost. Your first two safaris totalled 11 nights and ROAR 3 is 11 nights, all by itself.

Of course each year prices have gone up and we got CREAMED on the rand rate for Roar 3.

We get addicted to the safaris and want more nights everytime.

Next safari I do I think we do not float in Rand but do US $ at least we know what to expect.

Ngaire:

Yes, you are right. But with the price increases AND the Rand, this is an expensive trip and I doubt that it will be cheaper in the future.

But if the camps become more reasonable in their pricing (not likely, I fear), or if the Rand behaves better (who knows?), clearly, we love these trips. A 4th would be heaven.

But for now, we intend to enjoy the heck out of Roar 3.

Old friends & new friends. New camps and old camps. Every day is an adventure. Frankly, I cannot wait.

Of course, we will toast Mark.
He was a friend & we still marvel at his single-mind focus during Nile1. He is missed.

It will be an exciting time for all of you. The 3rd time didn't turn out to be my charm, but according to all my Houston friends......4 is now the magic number. I'll be expecting all of you to plan on returning for that one with me. I already have the wardrobe. :)

Ken just sent me an email of the latest report from Savanna on the Wild Dogs DENNING in this area. This is the same land that LEOPARD HILLS can also traverse. If the Savanna vehicles are seeing the dogs so can the Leopard Hills vehicles. FINALLY I may get to see Wild Dogs. When they den they stay put!

If Ken could get that shot they mention of a wild dog carrying a new born pup I would have it blown up to a huge size and hang it on my office wall. Maybe I should buy Ken a new camera and the perfect lens for this shot - oh I forgot he just took delivery of a new lens last week!

I will post the link when I can find it. I checked their web but this report was not there and the email Ken sent me did not have the link. He is MIA right now but should return soon. Great game right now.

FROM THE REPORT
The wild dogs are denning in the western sector near McKenzie Camp. They returned at the beginning of the week and headed straight for the large termite mounds they had been investigated a few weeks before. Only 6 individuals were visible suggesting that one of the pregnant females had entered the den. Later that day a female was seen carrying a newborn pup. A second female is also pregnant and is about to have her litter. This is not normal behaviour and might be due to the pack trying to increase their numbers. On one occasion they caught a young duiker and one of the females then proceeded to run around with the head as a prize and would not drop it.

GREAT!!!! What lens did Ken buy?....Inquiring minds like to know.
A week tomorrow we leave...woooo hooo. can't wait to see you all again.
Packing starts this weekend.
Question?? Am I the only one who doesn't plan on using anti-malaria pills?(I do have a prescription) Never used them anywhere else in the world, but Ray is sitting on fence on this issue.
I believe in lots of DEET and long sleeve, long pants at dusk and dawn....Pat
