Not sure how many of those on PANDA are aware that the 2008 Olympics will be held in Beijing 8/8-8/24/2008. We will likely see some scaffolding, traffic and a good deal of construction on our visit there but, being LCTers, we will make the best of it, I am sure. Wouldn't expect we will be affected on any of our other stops in China. It's difficult to tell from the map on the official website where the venues are in relation to the common tourist areas we will be frequenting; http://en.beijing2008.com/

For a second I got all excited thinking "wow, we'll be there during the Olympics!". Oops, wrong year.
I kind of get the feeling there is always traffic and construction going on in Beijing. Could be interesting to see what they're doing and how far along they are.

If you have breathing problems, be aware that the air in Beijing makes Los Angeles look clear as crystal.

Breathing-now that's something I know a thing or two about! As I tell my patients, lots of things in life are optional, but breathing is not one of them. ;)

With regards to the pollution, there is nothing you can do other than avoiding exertion when air quality is bad, taking any meds you may be on, staying indoors in AC, etc. SARS and bird flu are a different problem. The CDC website offers the latest information on both: http://www.cdc.gov/NCIDOD/SARS/ http://www.cdc.gov/flu/avian/gen-info/pdf/avian_facts.pdf I honestly do not feel anyone should have serious fears about becoming ill. No SARS sonce 2003, and only those who handle sick birds have gotten Avian Flu so far. The only concern I have is that if there is a recurrence of SARS or a confirmed outbreak of Avian Flu, those travelling in endemic areas would likely be placed in quarantine and not allowed to return home immediately-just think-Regent might have to open the bar and keep us aboard for a while! :D
