From Ngaire:
WHAT A DAY WE HAD. GREAT ZODIAC CRUISE IN THE MORNING. WE SET OFF IN ABSOLUTE CALM WITH THE EXPEDITION LEADER IN THE VERY FIRST ZODIAC. VERY PLEASED WITH OURSELVES FOR OUR GOOD FORTUNE TO HAVE THE EXPEDITION LEADER.
THEN OUR LITTLE ADVENTURE BEGAN. THE ENGINE STOPPED WORKING SO WE HAD TO BE RESCUED AT SEA IN ANTARTICA. ALONG SIDE CAME ANOTHER ZODIAC AND THEY HELD THE TWO BOATS TOGETHER WITH OARS. VERY HIGH TECH. IT WORKED PERFECTLY AND WE SWITCHED BOATS. IT AS REALLY QUITE FUN. LESLIE AND BRAD WERE WITH US. OUR ZODIAC CRUISE WAS AROUND PARADISE BAY AND WE SAW A FABULOUS GLACIER THAT WE ALL REALLY ENJOYED GETTING REALLY CLOSE TO, AND THE CAMERAS WERE CLICKING AWAY. ONE PART LOOKED LIKE HIGH RISE BUILDINGS, PICTURES LATER. WE SAW A WEDDELL AND CRABEATER SEAL ON ICEBERGS .
THEN WE HEADED FOR A LANDING ON THE SEVENTH CONTINENT. MANY TOOK THE TREK UP THE HILL AND THEN CAME SLIDING DOWN ON THEIR REAR ENDS. MORE PADDING NOW AFTER THE GREAT FOOD ON THIS TRIP.
RETURNING TO THE SHIP THE POOL DECK OFFERED VODKA , BEER AND HOT DOGS. WE ALL ENJOYED THE AMBIANCE AND DRINKS AND THEN HEADED TO THE DINING ROOM FOR ANOTHER GREAT LUNCH.
FOLLOWED BY YET ANOTHER GAME IN THE POOCH CHAMPIONSHIP EVENT.
WE SAILED THROUGH THE LEMAIRE CHANNEL IT WAS PICTURE PERFECT. CALM, ICEBERGS AND MOUNTAINS REFLECTING IN THE WATER.
THE SUNSHINE CONTINUED AS WE LANDED AT PETERMAN ISLAND WHERE WE WERE GREETED BY GENTOO AND ADELIE PENGUINS. THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL SPOT. AGAIN PICTURES WILL TELL THE STORY-
ABOUT TO SET SAIL FOR DECEPTION ISLAND. TWO MORE LANDINGS TOMORROW AND THEN WE HAVE TO LEAVE THIS WONDERFUL PLACE.

SCOOP DU JOUR
February 3, Paradise Bay - Antarctic mainland and Petermann Island
Yesterday was one of the highlights of the trip. For the continent counters we set foot on the Antarctic peninsula. We also reached our most southern point in the voyage in the afternoon at Petermann Island at 65 degrees south. We had a beautiful sunny day with amazing scenery in between and after the 2 landings.
In the morning we anchored in Paradise Bay, a large bay surrounded by huge glaciers, mountains and some amazing glacial 'scupltures'. We first had about a one hour incredibly scenic zodiac cruise around the bay and various coves. All the zodiacs have names - today some of us were in the Sir Ernest Shackleton boat, driven by expedition leader David. About 15 minutes into it the motor died and we had to rescued by Jiri, the Chief Officer, who did a high tech maneuver of hooking the 2 zodiacs together with paddles while we all clambored over into the other boat, the Sir Francis Drake, after which we resumed our tour. The bay ws like glass - wouldn't have wanted to try that maneiver the other day in the huge swells! We saw some seals on icebergs, blue eyed cormorants and stunning scenery.
After that we landed at the Admirante Brown research station where we took pictures of all of us on the mainland and a few of us climbed a big hill behind the station and 'luged' down a sled chute.
Back onboard they had set up little tables around the pool deck and served Danish hotdogs, beer and Absolut vodka accompanied by some oom-pah musc.
The scenery today was gorgeous - we sailed through the Lemaire Channel in the afternoon, crunching through a bit of ice and dodging icebergs. Then we anchored at Petermann Island for a penguin stop at a colony featuring Gentoos and Adelies. There was a small red sailboat moored at the island and there also were several yellow tents on shore, home for months to some young Argentine penguin researchers.
We went back up the Lemaire channel afterwards, and after dinner we sailed through another stunning area, the Neumeyer Channel.

From Ngaire:
TODAY WAS OUR LAST DAY IN ANTARCTICA.
AS WE WERE LEAVING YESTERDAY A GIANT ICEBERG HAD FLOATED IN TO THE NARROW CHANNEL WE HAD TO SAIL THROUGH. ONLY FOUR HOURS BEFORE WHEN WE CAME THROUGH THE CHANNEL IT WAS NOT THERE. THE ICEBERG LOOKS LIKE THEY ARE STANDING STILL BUT THEY ACTUALLY MOVE QUITE A LOT DEPENDING ON THE WINDS AND THE CURRENTS.
GREAT EXCITEMENT AS WE ALL WENT TO THE BRIDGE TO SEE THE CAPTAIN STEER THE BOAT THROUGH THIS CHALLENGING SITUATION. WHEN YOU LOOKED AT THE CHANNEL OPENING IT WAS HARD TO SEE HOW HE WOULD GET AROUND THE ICEBERG. HOWEVER THERE WAS ROOM ON ONE SIDE THAT WAS NOT INITIALLY EVIDENT AND VERY SLOWLY WE PASSED THE ICEBERG AND ENTERED THE CHANNEL. IT WAS FUN THOUGH AND I LOVE BEING ABLE TO BE ON THE BRIDGE.
THIS MORNING WE ARRIVED AT DECEPTION ISLAND WHERE YOU CAN GO FOR A SWIM IN THE OCEAN. HOWEVER THE TIDE WAS TOO HIGH TO DIG THE HOT POOL IN THE VOLCANIC SAND SO THE SWIM WAS CALLED OFF FOR THE PASSENGERS. THE SHIP ANCHORS IN A CALDERA OF A VOLCANO THAT I BELIEVE WAS ACTIVE AS RECENTLY AS THE 1970'S.
THE POOCH CHAMPIONSHIP CONTINUES WITH THE TITLE ON THE LINE THE TENSION BUILDS. THE GAME WAS PUT ON HOLD AS THE SHIP WAS SURROUNDED BY HUMPBACK AND FIN WHALES.
THIS AFTERNOON WE VISITED A CHILEAN AND RUSSIAN RESEARCH STATION. A FEW ITEMS TO BUY AND THE SHOP WAS CROWDED. SOME CHINSTRAP PENGUINS ADDED TO MY ENJOYMENT OF THIS FINAL LANDING. THERE WAS CATHOLIC CHURCH AT THE CHILEAN STATION AND A REALLY CUTE RUSSION CHURCH AT RUSSIAN STATION. 12 CHILDREN AT THE CHILEAN STATION AND ONE GERMAN GIRL LIVING WITH THE RUSSIAN CONTINGENT. I BET SHE IS POPULAR.
WE JUST WERE TOLD THE FORECAST FOR THE DRAKE PASSAGE IS FAIRLY GOOD. LIGHT WINDS SO THE ONLY THING THAT MAY MAKE US ROCK AND ROLL IS A SWELL.
WE ARE SAILING OUT TO SEA NOW WITH THE SUN GLISTENING ON THE WATER. BEEN A GREAT TRIP.
SEA DAY TOMORROW AND THE POOCH CHAMPIONSHIP WILL CONTINUE.

SCOOP DU JOUR:
February 4: Deception Island an King George Island
This morning we sailed into the bay, which is actually a volcanic crater, at Deception Island, through a very narrow passage which is where the Norweigan ship, the Nordkapp, got hung up on some rocks a few days ago. The landing was at an abandoned whaling station. This stop features the possibility for passengers to join the 'polar bear club' by jumping into the Antarctica ocean and then into hot pools that one digs into the beach prior to the swim. Today, however, we were there at high tide so there was no beach to dig the pools into, so nobody got to swim. As you can imagine, we were all lined up in our swimsuits and so disappointed...
Lunch today was an Asian buffet, featuring some really good sushi and sashimi in addition to some other Asian dishes.
In the afternoon we sailed into the big bay at St George Island which is ringed by research stations, some active, some apaprently there as a way to keep a political base and some 'territory' in Antarctica. We anchored closed to the Nordkapp which is there for some repairs before it sails back through the Drake Passage to Ushuaia. We zodiaced in to shore for a look around the Chilean and Russian stations, complete with respective mini Catholic and Russian Orthodox churches, as well as have a look at some chinstrap penguins.
February 5; sea day through the Drake Passage
It is rocking and rolling a bit as we are now about halfway through the dreaded Drake Passage, but the weather oevrall is quite good. We have partially cloudy skies, calm winds and the swells this morning were 12-15 ft, not at all bad, and so far no reappearance of the barf bags. Today we have two lectures, one by Jonathon on the Galapagos and one we are all waiting for this afternoon by David on life in an Antarctic station. Tonight is the captain's farewell cocktail party and dinner - usually not scheduled during the passage day, so that must be a vote of confidence in the weather.
Other than that, the flurry of pooch games continues to pick up with Ken redoing his sreadsheet after every round of games. I held a narrow lead as of this morning, but I believe Brad will be moving ahead once Ken tabulates the morning scores. Anyone traveling with Ngaire in the future can expect to be sucked nto this card game.
Tomorrow we land at Cape Horn, weather permitting, and then it will be time to pack and spend our last night onboard. Not sure when the German vocabulary quiz will take place, but we are all nodding as if if we comprehend the German announcements when they are made so we have learned quite a bit of the language.

From Ngaire:
WE ARE CURRENTLY IN THE MIDDLE OF DRAKE LAKE. THERE ARE SOME SWELLS BUT NOTHING MAJOR AND THERE IS VERY LITTLE WIND. NO WHITE CAPS IN SIGHT. LAST NIGHT I THINK THE SWELLS WERE A LITTLE STRONGER BUT THERE WAS NOTHING MAJOR GOING ON. NO BANGING DRAWERS OR THINGS FALLING AROUND.
WE HAVE BEEN TRULY BLESSED WITH THE WEATHER. A FEW OVERCAST DAYS AND A COUPLE OF DAYS WITH SOME SWELLS BUT EVERYTIME WE NEEDED SUNSHINE OR CALM WINDS FOR A LANDING THE WEATHER GODS CAME THOUGH.
UNEVENTFUL DAY AT SEA WITH POOCH CHAMPIONSHIP IN FULL SWING. WE HAVE NOW PLAYED 34 GAMES WITH THE AVERAGE GAME BEING ABOUT 45 MINUTES IN LENGTH. THAT MEANS WE HAVE PLAYED APPROXIMATELY 26 HOURS OF POOCH. IT HAS BEEN A LOT OF FUN AND WE HAVE LAUGHED AND ENJOYED OURSELVES IMMENSLY. THIS IS NOT A SERIOUS GAME LIKE BRIDGE, EASY TO LEARN IT JUST TAKES ABOUT 5 MINUTES. ANY TAP PEOPLE WANT TO LEARN FOR THE CROSSING?.
OFF TO THE CAPTAINS FAREWELL PARTY. FREE DRINKS. THIS PAYING FOR DRINKS INLCUDING COKE AND BOTTLED WATER GETS OLD.
ONE MORE DAY TO GO.

These reports have been awesome! What an incredible trip! I, too, will miss the daily SCOOP DU JOUR. Thanks to Ngaire, Leslie, Peggy and Fred for keeping us in the POOP SCOOP LOOP!
SCOOP DU JOUR -
February 6: Cape Horn
We were incredibly lucky with our voyage through the dreaded Drake Passage. After mild swells yesterday morning and early afternoon the seas calmed and by late afternoon and all through the night you never would have suspected that we were what is usually the roughest water in the world. Now we are anchored at Cape Horn - the weather is lousy - raining, windy, wavy and cold, in the mid 30's. The 'boots on the ground' travelers are not deterred by this though and are climbing into the zodiacs after donning their parkas and rubber boots for the last time to set foot on the bottom of the continent. People returning from the shuttle are totally soaked. Due to the poor weather we will only be here for a couple hours and then sail through the Beagle Channel as we head back to Ushuaia, anchoring overnight in Puerto Williams.
Last night was the captain's farewell cocktail party, dinner and crew show. During cocktails they recognized all the key personnel on the trip, most interestingly the various zodiac drivers. Employees from all over the ship have voluntarily (ie at no extra pay) taken on zodiac driving in addition to their regular duties, for instance one woman who regularly serves us cappuccinos and wine in the Observation lounge during our pooch games, etc. is a driver, as is one of the housekeepers, the hotel director, the guy who runs the boutique and even the sous chef.
The crew show consisted of a series of songs of the sea by a 'crew choir', which also had an interesting make up of personnel - the nurse, the beautician, the maitre d', one of the chefs, the dim lady from the front desk, Esther, zodiac driver extraordinaire, David Fletcher, the expedition leader, some of the waiters, waitresses and deck hands. One of the Filipino deck hands did a terrific solo as did David, who was so great that the crowd demanded an encore. No lip-synching for this group!

From Ngaire:
WE MANAGED A LANDING TODAY AT CAPE HORN BUT IT WAS WINDY, WET AND NOT TOO PLEASANT. MOST WENT ASHORE BUT I DECIDED TO STAY ONBOARD SINCE I HAD DONE THE CAP BEFORE IN BRIGHT SUNSHINE.
LUNCH TODAY WAS THE BARVARIAN BUFFET BUT IT WAS SO CROWDED AND NOISY MOST OF US DECIDED TO MOVE DOWNSTAIRS TO THE DINING ROOM. I HAD A PASTA WITH CRABMEAT THAT WAS WONDERFUL.
THE FINAL MATCHES OF POOCH TAKE PLACE TODAY AT 4.00 PM WE NEEDED A BREAK TO PACK.
TOMORROW BRAD,LESLIE, PEGGY, JERRY, KEN AND I WILL ALL BE AT THE CLUB IN BUENOS AIRES FOR ABOUT 6 HOURS WAITING FOR OUR FLIGHTS. SO THE FIVE POOCHERS WILL CONTINUE ON POOCHING UNTIL THE LAST MOMENT. KEN (A NON POOCHER) HAS 16 PICTURES READY TO TRY TO POST ON LCT FROM THE COMPUTERS IN THE CLUB. MORE WILL FOLLOW ON KODAK GALLERY BUT WE PICKED OUT SOME PENGUIN, BIRD AND SCENERY SHOTS TO POST.
TOMORROW OFF THE BOAT AND THE FLIGHT HOME. THE TIME TRULY HAS FLOWN BY THIS IS THE LONGEST CRUISE I HAVE EVER TAKEN. I AM READY TO GO HOME NOW BUT IT WAS NOT TOO LONG. A FEW MORE LANDINGS IN ANTARCTICA WOULD HAVE BEEN FINE WITH ME . THE TIME AT SEA HAS BEEN FILLED WITH LECTURES AND POOCH. I HAVE REALLY ENJOYED EVERYONE IN THE GROUP.
BACK TO REALITY BRIGHT AND EARLY TOMORROW.

Checking in from the Admirals club in Buenos Aires. Ngaire, Ken, Peggy, Jerry, Brad and I are all here - amazingly this keyboard sticks just like the ones on the Hanseatic!
The final struggle for bags after our charter flight from Ushuaia at the domestic airport in BA was worthy of the final duel! We will not be missing some (most)of our fellow passengers, JA!

We are in Buenos Aires waiting for our flight to Dallas, so here are .......... SOME OF KEN'S PHOTOS: A King Penguin chick imitating Brad winning at pooch. In Antarctica birds walk on water These white seals are not albinos, they are blondies and they are one in a thousand seals born In King Penguin heaven A perfectly calm day in South Georgia Seal --- Get off my beach Kings ---- Forget it we outnumber you Penguins as far as the eye can see Penguins in front of the ship - they were everywhere.

MORE OF KEN'S PHOTOS: Paradise Bay--this ice looked like a big city skyline ---note the size of the zodiac in the picture The beautiful Lemaire Channel This Adelie Penguin was picking up rocks and making a nest---one rock at a time, back and forth multiple times. Two Gentoo chicks chasing a mother Gentoo for food, she will ONLY feed her own chick---one of these chicks has picked the wrong mother. This was the iceberg that blocked our path as we left the Lemaire Channel. We will post the series of shots as we got past this iceberg when we post all our pictures. These birds were following the ship, I loved this photo. All types of birds were always around the ship. A Fin Whale being chased by a penguin. Quite a difference in size! Our last stop we finally saw the cute Chinstrap Penguins At the airport about to leave so I just added a few captions. I am sure Leslie, Fred and Peggy will post full reports on their return.
