Jeff and Susan, so glad to see that you are going on the same cruise. We look forward to meeting you. We did the similar cruise this past November on the Silver Whisper and absolutely loved it. This one will be our 5th SS cruise so far. Three times on the Whisper and we will be on the Cloud in April.

We read your review of the recent cruise and it looks like you are really getting into diving. We are not divers, just snorkelers. Maybe one of these years I'll get up the nerve. This will be our first time on SS. A year ago we tried Radisson and it was nice, but not the home run I think we were expecting. Still, we liked the small ship experience and met some wonderful folks. If you can comment, aside from SS being truly all inclusive, what differences do you know about when comparing with Radisson? I know that on many cruises SS is now less expensive for a comparable cabin, so the competitive situation has changed somewhat. We always compare pricing to what we would normally pay for a Sky Suite on Celebrity after adding in our bar bill and tips, and this trip with the 50% discount fits the bill price-wise - and then some, depending on the bar bill (including wine we typically bring on board to have in our room and a couple of special bottles for dinner). It really sounds like there isn't any need to bring anything on board.

Speaking of wine, do you know where we might be able to see a typical standard wine list for one the cruises on SS?

Of course, our cruise is a year away and with the snow and ice here and more on its way, we wish it was NOW.

Jeff, we really can't compare it to RSSC yet. We are finally doing our first Radisson cruise in August on the MUSH cruise that many people on LCT are going on as well. We were booked to do the Diamond Med cruise last year, but the ship was sold and we ended up again on the Whisper again. Aside from SS being All Inclusive, I can't think of any differences that we have heard. I understand from people that have done both that they are pretty equal, with maybe a slight nudge to SS for service.
Maybe that has something to do with the SS ships being smaller.
Shadow and Whisper are about 28,000 tons and have a maximum of 288 people onboard and the cabins are 287 sq ft interior space with verandahs adding about another 50 sq ft. By comparison the Mariner and Voyager are about 50,000 tons and have about 700 people onboard. Sq footage is about the same with about the same size verandahs.
As far as the wine list, SS used to supply a list of the wines served, but lately we have found them serving so many different varieties from all over the world that they no longer provide a standard list of wines. I found them to be acceptable for the most part and in the general range of $20-$30 for what we would pay at our local wine shop for the same wines. Of course they do have premium wines also available. We also liked their standard champagne that is served throughout the ship, which is Pommery Grand Brut.
Even though we don't have weather as bad as you guys in Chicago, I too wish the cruise was now!!! I can't stand winters.
Also, try to get into the Terrace Cafe for the set course dinners with wine pairings and limited to 60 people. It is a well kept secret! So Shhhhhh!!! You may need to contact the Maitre D' as soon as you board and get your name in. Le Champagne on the other hand is probably something to do once, but too expensive of an upcharge in my estimation. However, if you are an oneophile, it may be worth the experience.

We live in Plainfield, I grew up on the south side of Chicago, White Sox fan of course. The wife and I tried Silversea for the first time a month ago and we are hooked. We have a cruise with Holland America in March, spring break cruise with my son, and I think this will be our last cruise with a mainline cruise company. We have always cruised with Princess and found Silversea to be the best.

Thanks for everyone responding. We have a nephew who works for a large engineering concern in Plainfield. Aside from that, all I know is that it's pretty far by Chicago standards from Highland Park - but only a train or two away, I guess. We're transplanted Southern Californians who love Chicago but not "this" kind of winter weather. Guess we were spoiled by the relatively mild winters the past 4 years. From what we've read, the Terrace Cafe is definitely something we'd like to do at least a couple of times. Also, some of the island stops are certainly not the norm for Caribbean cruises and is also one of the reasons the cruise caught our fancy. Well, I guess we can celebrate that we didn't get the 5 inches they said we would. Of course, freezing rain is no laughing matter. OK, well that's it for today! Later, Jeff

Well we are transplanted SoCals as well. Diana and I both grew up in Orange County. Where did y'all live at? My parents and brother live in Rancho Santa Margarite and DIanas family are in Orange, Garden Grove, and Rancho Palos Verdes.

I was born in Long Beach, raised in LA near Culver City (Elem School) and Van Nuys (Jr Hi, HS). Went to what is now Loyola Marymount on the west side, and lived most of my post school years in Cypress in OC. In my second life/second wife we lived in West Hills in the San Fernando Valley before moving here. Susan was actually born in New York, moved with her family to Evanston when she was 12, stayed in Illinois through college (University of Illinois) then moved to So Cal. She spent most of her post school years in Malibu and Calabasas before her divorce and move to West Hills. She insisted that if I was going to drag her back to Chicago we had to live on the North Shore, so here we are!

It's funny, but in my youth it was all stories of people moving to So Cal. Now it seems everywhere we go we meet people who have left So Cal for a variety of reasons. Gotta admit though, it still has better weather!

Looks like you guys have a busy sailing season ahead of you! The first cruise Susan and I ever went on was on the Celebrity Century out of Genoa. We had a chance to see Lisbon on a Constellation T/A a couple years ago. Loved Sintra! Anyway, we're sure it will be a great cruise.

We've never gone to Alaska. After winters here, we're not too inclined to go someplace cool, even if the summer is hot. Still, I'm sure it's beautiful - sure looks it from all the photos I've seen.

And then there's our early warm-up in December. We've done a few Carib cruises since we moved here as it's a pleasant way to get warm, meet some great folks and not have too far to go to get there. One of the intriguing things for us about this itinerary is that we get to see a few islands we haven't been to yet - I guess one of the Silversea pluses. That plus we can sail on Silversea for something relatively affordable!

Wow and here I was complaining that it was in the upper 30's this morning! We don't do cold well. So why are we going to Alaska. I guess because everybody says you have to do it once, we have quite a group here on LCT that are going, oh and we have cruise certificates worth $1400 that we have to use on RSSC before the end of the year. Just something about having to take a jacket in August on a cruise with you though!
As you know we did the similar cruise to our Silver Shadow cruise this year from Barbados on the Whisper, with a few different ports. I do like having the disembarkation in Ft. Lauderdale. So much easier clearing customs at the port as opposed to clearing it in the San Juan or Miami Airports.
Hey Jeff, there is plenty of time to get certified between now (well maybe late Spring) and the time we set sail next December!!! You ought to check it out. We are going to some great dive spots.

Actually, I think Renee and I had a tennis class together and probably more (Miss Kuhl was our teacher). We moved to Sherman Oaks my last year (1973) and I commuted. My brother went to Grant for one or two years (and then he moved in with my Dad) and graduated Chatsworth in 1976.
My bluebird/Campfire Troop just had a party to celebrate the fact that we're all 50 now.

Yep, amazingly small world. But staying in touch with your pre-girl scouts and celebrating turning 50 - I wouldn't have a clue where any of my fellow scouts are these days. I do have one close friend from elementary school (5th grade) who I see regularly, other than that, it's college or later for me. We survived and had a great time. Kids came over for Christmas and Diana and I headed to San Antonio and spent New Years there. Of course now I'm a few pounds heavier, so it's back on the diet for me. Only have about 3 months till our next cruise.

It was a bit crazy here after Christmas when the kids (well, most of them) came for an extended visit. Have to admit it was nice last Sunday night to just have the two of us again!! We're on the diet train right now also. This is our next booked cruise but we do have a trip to Hawaii planned for early March and we would both like to be in better shape by then. Not much else new to report here, except to hope that January continues to stay relatively mild. Take care everyone! Jeff

Jeff, I know what you mean. Our daughter went back to school this week and we are back to the empty nest!!! While we love them, it is great for there to be just the two of us.
Hope you guys to well on your diets as well. I have lost 12 lbs so far. We are heading to the Med in 13 weeks and figure we better be in good shape. Well, at least better shape!

If a good friend of ours would make up her mind as to when she plans to have their wedding (in the Caribbean) we just might jump on this cruise. She keeps saying it will be the week after Thanksgiving, but so far there is nothing set in stone.
I love these ports of call - we've been to many islands, but most of these would be new to us and ones I'd love to see as well as to try SilverSea! :cool:

I just think it's a no-brainer to book and choose the suite you want while it's still available - you have quite a window of time to cancel w/o penalty.

I agree with Jeff. If you think it is what you want to do. Go for it. Like he said you can always cancel if you have to. Also it gives you something to work towards. Good Luck!

Note this is better than their normal 2 for 1. It is a true 50% off with Single Occupancy starting at: Vista - 150%; Veranda - 150%
I booked the four dayer 2-1 but had to pay 100% single sup. That worked out to one single no discount fare with no sup. IMHO a good price.
But this is better..... Mmmmm thinking.....

I called SS and the only Vista Suite left is #415! :eek:
We will do the Veranda level for sure - if we book this sailing.

The vista suites always go VERY fast, particularly the ones with the shared balcony. I'm willing to bet even some of the 2007 sailings are booked. Many people waitlist for the shared balcony vistas - I think Don (cruisinsince75) may have done that before, if I'm not mistaken...?
BTW, Don, what suite did you get for this sailing?
I sure hope you can join them, Sue! Keep us posted!
