Yes, and I loved your periodic pix updates during your weight loss and IT DID NOT REGISTER when I looked at you - actually I think you waved from 10 feet away and I still had that "duh" look on my face - you and Don have to be so incredibly proud - job well done!!!

Thanks, Andrea...I have done WW in the past, but not Core. One of my sisters does Core and is very successful, so was wondering if anyone here was doing that. It must have been really hard for you to stick to Jenny on your trip; I'm guessing, from reading your posts, that Jenny didn't actually join you on your cruise, lol.

I'm doing a rough personalized version of South Beach. But then again, I'm not losing much. So there you go! I'm trying to keep the portions down, watch snacks, keep down the fat and white carbs. Trying to have some fruit every day, keep up the veggies (I love veggies, fortunately). Stick to lean protein, low-fat dairy. Fibre--very important for me--whole grains, in moderation. Some white wine. Exercise.

On the topic of exercise, anybody had plantar fasciitis? I've got an obvious case (heel pain, especially when rising, or after sitting). I'm looking at ways of healing it (pardon the pun), but many of those mean less exercise!

Wendy, before the school year ended, I gave South Beach a whirl, and I thought I was doing so great on Phase 1 after two weeks that I went ahead and took it to a third week. By the end of that third week I had a severe headache, and I finally ate some potato chips (was craving them) and some fruit (also craving badly). My headache went away, and I decided if I ever tried SB again I would not be able to give up fruit. I think that WW Core and SB are a little similar. I can't wait until I can start exercising again, which will be late next week!

Melinda, I highly recommend WW Core. I lost quite a bit of weight on the Core plan 3 years ago and have maintained since then by following the same principles (most of the time). I too had tried South Beach previously. The plans are similar, but I had better success with WW Core. I feel Core gives you more flexibility with the "good" carbs (such as the fruit you were craving) which has helped me stay on plan.

For me - equally important to eating in a healthy way has been consistent exercise. I believe that's made a huge difference in losing and maintaining.

Feel free to ask me any questions on WW Core if you decide to give it a try!

You're allowed fruit on phase 2 of SB, and some grain, but you're supposed to add them slowly and pay attention to their effect. I have decided never to use phase 1 no matter what, since I need fibre in my diet. I'm not a big fruit eater, usually have to force myself to eat a piece of fruit each day, but need some bread and grain in my diet. I don't follow the diet religiously, but I do subscribe to their online service, which helps--they've got a forum, menus, tips, a weight-tracker and stuff like that. It's a heart-healthy way of eating, which is important to me, and one that's sustainable.

Well, I am on phase 2 of Atkins, which is called OWL (on going weight loss). It is very similar to SB phase II. I add in more carbs each week mostly fruits, vegetables, berries, nuts, and high fiber grains until I find my carb tolerance level. When I find that I stop losing or gain weight, I back it back down and continue until I reach goal.

Wendy, I have found that keeping track is really important. I belong to an online forum for Atkins as well. Lots of recipes, tips, advice, and there is a program that you input everything you eat. It calculates the number of calories, the carb content, the fat content, and all of the ratios. You also log in your exercises, your weight and it calculates the calories burned. BTW, I don't know if they have this in Canada, but Natures Own, makes a bread that is whole grain that only has 5 net carbs per slice.

Well, I don't think I have found my carb tolerance level yet, but I did actually gain weight this week. Not much, only 1/2 pound, so I'm not stressing out. I think it is just a temporary stall or water weight or too many nights that I had a glass of wine. I haven't taken my measurements lately, but I can tell they are going the right direction.

All the successful plans are quite similar. I am on Lindora. The allowable foods are just what you would expect but every day there is some fruit and some veggies. One day a week you do all protein and only carbs from protein sources like yogurt or NF cheese. There is the accountability that comes with being weighed in but Lindora as opposed to WW is one on one and since it is staffed by RNs I get a Vit B shot every visit. My weight loss has not been so great this time around because eventually one figures out where you can "cheat" (this is my 3rd program) but all told I have lost 30+ lbs and last night got myself into a size 8 pair of jeans!! I feel great and think maybe I should just accept that I am never gonna look 25 again and settle for looking good for my age!

Can one of you recent Voyagers remind me what they have in the gym--Andrea, you said the equipment was old and needed replacement. Do they have an elliptical cross-trainer at least?

Hey Helen, I concur--size 8 would sound pretty darned good to me! I'm approaching 60, and frankly I can't get used to the idea of getting older. I look at all the young women in their mid-20s on the street and think, "if only they knew!" I'm trying to concentrate on being healthy, and for that I should be 20 pounds thinner, 30 would be better, but possibly unobtainable.

Wendy - Voyager gym has two bikes, several treadmills, three elliptical machines. A couple of weight lifting machines, free weights and (to my way of thinking) Jackie leading the exercise classes. They were a great add to personal workouts.

Cheers, Anne

Dena, thank you! I agree that all the programs are somewhat similar, but I never heard of Lindora, and that sounds great, too. I love fruit and veggies and can live on salads with a little olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Wendy, you are so right, too, about the importance of heart-healthy eating these days. I'm going to be 50 in March. Since my surgery, if I wanted to wear a bikini, I could (I haven't in well over 10 years). I am also loving the way certain items of clothing are fitting me now because they lay on my body so nicely. I am still wearing elastic waistbands, and I don't know what I"m going to do when I go back to work next month, but hopefully by then some of the numbness I feel now will have started to go away and clothes won't feel as odd. I hope when all is said and done to be a 6 or an 8. I hate that my mom (Ollie/Nini) is smaller than I am. She works out on a regular basis and eats right far more often than I do, but I'm highly movitvated to change my life now that I've gone through what I went through.

Wendy - there is really only 1 elliptical crosstrainer I would recommend - it's the one in the back row. There are 2 others in the front row, but they are just strange - they don't have the same motion as what I'm used to - it's more like a hopping motion. I can't explain it very well! The one in the back is better, but nothing like what I'm used to (I'm spoiled). You have to program it very-y-y slowly or it freezes up and you have to start again. I was very happy to get back to my LifeFitness machine at the gym yesterday!

Thanks guys, I usually end up being a complete slug on a cruise, beyond the odd brisk walk around the upper deck. But I can live in hope that this time it will be different

Dena--ww core worked for me too. now all the way down, but to a place where I am comfortable. With core, as opposed to ww points, you are not limited in amounts--just knowing that allowed me to stop when I was full.
Wendy--we'll never be 25, or look it. but I don't think I'd want to go back.

correction--"not" all the way down. By the time I lose all the weight I want to lose, I'll probably be too old to remember why I cared in the first place!

Joanna I loved your little analogy of my weight loss! That is a lot of butter!

Several years back when I was on a "not so healthy" type of weight loss program (takinng the Rx diet pills that turned out to be BAD)I had lost 40 lbs. In the drs office they had a huge yellow glob - they told me it was a 5lb hunk of fat and that I had lost 8 of them!

I am thankful for two things; one that I don't have to take off 40 lbs this time and two that I am doing it a much healthier way with no pills - just TRYING to eat smarter and exercise. ;)

Thanks Don - hope all is well with you!

The yellow glob, that's a powerful one!

I was carrying some stuff up to the office the other day after visiting Costco, and it weighed about 20 pounds. I said to my younger companion, who is facing weight-gain in the future from very bad eating habits, "This is what it would feel like walking around with another 20 pounds on your frame!" Another powerful incentive.

I always love the weight analogies. I can't imagine walking around all day carrying two 50 lb bags of concrete mix, but that was what I was doing. No wonder I feel so much better.

Good going, Sue! I am just kinda stuck, down 2 and up 2....But got myself into the size 8s so really happy and trying not to dwell too much on the scale itself. [also trying not to think too much about how much bigger size 8 is these days
;-)]

Helen, good news about the size 8! It had to feel good. Actually, I think they are making the sizes smaller! ;)

After gaining 1/2 lb the prior week, this week I lost another 2 1/2 lbs, making it 105 to date!

I still want to lose another 25 by the time we board CROSS in November. I think it's doable. I just need to concentrate on burning an avg. of 750 more calories than I take in each day!

Thanks Helen! I know what you mean about size 8's being larger...I have some shorts and jeans size 8 that fit great and then others are a 10.

Don; way to go with 105 lbs lost!!! Woo Hoo - if you take off more weight you have to post another picture before CROSS!!!

Your cement bags analogy...I can't imagine carrying those around! YIKES That is a lot of sticks of butter!!!!

Sounds like everyone is having a good July. Way to go! After 3 weeks in Tahiti, I did not gain a pound. We were very active spending close to 40 hours snorkeling. Lots of walking as well. If I could be that active all the time, I'd be in great shape.

After a week of Tahiti recovery, I finally got back on the bike yesterday. It felt really good. We're heading into the best weather of the year in Colorado and it's wonderful to get outside.

I am kind of missing the chocolate croissants for breakfast though :) .
