Wendy....so sorry about your back. It's so hard to get off your feet and rest, especially when there are about 100 things that need to be done!

Take it easy - and arm chair surf with us!

Feel better soon...

Margo, I wish I could join you with the wine, but it will be a few weeks. I am in intense training! LOL Actually, I have to give it up for the next eight weeks as I transition into the next level of my diet. Then I can add it back in. It is a bummer too, because we won this really nice bottle of Brunello in a silent auction that I am just dying to try. Oh, BTW I reached my first level on FitPoints this morning. It had fireworks and a banner of congratulations on the screen when I finished my workout. So far I am still at #1 for FitPoints this month and #2 for calories burned among guys in my age bracket. You know, 20-29 years old! LOL

Wendy, I am sorry to hear about your back. I know what it is like to have back problems so I can sympathize with you. You take care of yourself and just take it easy for a while!

Sure Sue! Just take me on your next cruise with you! LOL

All the stars came into alignment as well as all the snow finially melted and I was able to get out for the first bike ride of the year yesterday. 60 degrees and sunny. It felt so nice to be out again. The only down side to the first ride is it feels like I have a bike seat attached to my back side today.

I'm down 3 this week!

Way to go everyone. The Stars moved and so did the scale! I am down 25 lbs so far. I learned some new things about metabolism. When you are sick, your body will use whatever it has to get better and your weight loss, no matter how good you are being with your food, will take a back seat to healing.

Margo, Wine is a Fruit and Chocolate is a vegetable. - Well, don't we wish!

Way to go Kathy!

On one of my previous endeavours to loose weight, I tried cutting out chocolate. BAD IDEA! I was so cranky, Christie was ready to kick me out. So we decided to make up for it somewhere else. In my food pyramid, chocolate has a place.

I'm getting around a bit now, but still taking it very easy. I feel like a blimp, and probably look one. Oh well, this too shall pass.

Congratulations Kathy and David on a great week. :app:

Wendy, don't beat yourself up right now. Just concentrate on healing. Then when you star feeling better, take it slow and easy.

I am experimenting with what I have been told this week. I will find out on Monday if it actually works. I have to keep my carbs the same, right around 20, but have to increase my carbs from vegetables to around 15. I also have to increase the amount of protein that I am taking in. That means pushing my calorie intake up another 200-300 points per day. Kind of like priming the pump. Right now, my body is holding on. I am told that this will make my body lose weight more efficiently. Go Figure!

Right now, I am at about 1800 calories per day. My BMR is at 2400 and I am averaging about 500 calories per day from working out. When you take in all the other things that I do, a low estimate is that I burn about 4000 calories per day, just to maintain my current weight. If I up it to about 2000 calories, then I should still have a deficit of 2000 calories per day. By my calculations that should be about 4 lbs. lost in a week! So far the scale hasn't budged this week.

Well, I did it. I went out and got one of those scales that you use Margo. Then I got on it and found out that our other scale was 6 lbs off. Unfortunately in the wrong direction. That's OK it means I lost the same amount of weight, but that I am just six pounds further from my goal weight. That fat% calculation is pretty cool. Don't like what it said, but it is still pretty cool!

Don...believe it or not, the body fat calculation will help you keep the faith when the weight # isn't changing - I've lost 8% body fat in the last two months - lost 18 lbs too - but the body fat # is important because when you're working out you're building muscle which weighs more than fat, so sometimes your actual loss doesn't show up in the weight number - but it will definitely show up in body fat loss! And in the mirror - I've finally lost enough for people to notice!

Margo, that is fantastic! Congratulations! I am looking forward to seeing the results after a few weeks. It was a little disconcerting however when I got on the scale yesterday, and the first reading came back, YOU'RE REALLY FAT~! LOL

Actually, it will be good to moniter where I'm at with regard to fat%. I also noticed that as the hydration goes down the fat% goes up. Normally I weigh in the morning, but I may need to change that, because after a nights sleep (obviously without water for 8 hours) your hydration level will be lower. Mine this morning read 33%. Should be at 55%. I think it was at 58% yesterday afternoon.

Last night we met some old friends that we hadn't seen in awhile and I got several comments about my weight loss. Wow, what a boost! <img border="0" alt="[vhappy]" title="" src="graemlins/icon_vhappy.gif" />

Yes, that Don is very inspirational. I think we should all be proud of his accomplishment. Will hardly know him when he boards on Cross.

Margo, Feel better. There is a respitory virus going around here that's just awful. I am in my 4th week of congestion and had two rounds of antibiotics!

Margo and Kathy, I hope you both get better soon. Diana has been sick also with a bronchial infection. She is starting to feel a little better now, but is awfully tired. Dr. gave her a steroid shot, some antibiotics, and some strong cough syrup. So it sounds like we have both coasts covered as well as in between!

Wendy, how is the back?

Now, I've got the crud. Not hacking yet, but woke up yesterday with a really sore throat. I still worked out, but did not go for my walk last night. I am going to take it little easier until this goes away. I have been popping echinacea and also took some airborne for an extra dose of vitamin C. If it persists, it is off to the doctors tomorrow.

I had something really good that happened to me yesterday though. I ran into a friend that worked with me about a year ago (before I started losing the weight) as my construction supervisor. He went to work for another company and I went over to see their new model and when he walked in the door and saw me, he said he had to do a double take because he almost didn't recognize me. Wow, was I jazzed!

Don - I hope you feel better! I've been really lucky since I started my program in that I haven't gotten sick. Although, I did get a cold back in November on Thanksgiving Day, but it wasn't enough to keep me away from my workouts. I know it can really throw you off track.

I am sure you felt fabulous when you saw your friend yesterday. It really makes it all worthwhile, doesn't it?

Hey Don, much better thanks for asking. This week I'm concentrating just on walking and posture. Next week I'll start exercising again, gradually. Haven't been on a scale in a while... :(

Don - I hope the crud doesn't hang around too long.

Wendy - Glad to hear your back is on the mend.

Alergies have hit in Denver. We had an unusually long and snowy winter, then it warmed up suddenly and all the trees bloomed at the same time. It smacked me like a 2X4. I haven't been able to exercise for almost a week. It's hard to exercise when you can't breath. The good news is my diet must be working fairly well as I have not gained any weight. The worst appears to be over so I can get back at it. It's funny I actually miss it and am looking forward to it.

Thanks guys! I am headed to the Dr. this morning. It has gotten worse. I think I have strep throat. I can hardly swallow. I guess that is good for the diet! LOL No exercise for me for the next couple of days.

Dave, allergies are a real pain. It makes it really hard to function. I know what you mean about missing it. I really wanted to get up to go workout, but knew I shouldn't press it.

Wendy, glad to hear you are doing better. Good idea to ease into your routine next week and take it slow and easy.

uh oh Don, No kissing Diana! I am just back from the doctor. I still have that bronchitis! One full month of it! We're going to let some time pass before I go on an third round of antibiotics. Geez.

But the scale is behaving. I am leaving this weekend for a photography convention where there will be a lot of temptation, irregular meal times and no fat free, sugar free things in the fridge either. Walk-walk and more walking!

Wendy, glad to hear you are on the mend. Exercise is important, but, calories or carbs - food does make the difference.

Kathy, you be really careful. Diana had a prolonged case of it before she had her problem a couple of years ago. Now we watch it like a hawk. Keep a close eye on your blood pressure!

The doctor said I didn't have strep, but do have a bronchial infection. He gave me Biaxin to try and knock it out. After I came back home I went to bed and slept for about 3 hours.

Don,
My memory of being prescribed Biaxin, several times; MD said it's the only time he prescribes M & Ms because of Biaxin's foul taste!! (Maybe it's improved since then!)

Hope you're all feeling better VERY soon!

Don,
I had a Zpack and then followed by Ketek. And my BP was 120/80 today. Even my HDL and LDL were happy!

Sending you some carb free chicken soup. I promise, you really didn't get it from us!

Kathy, that is good. That was what mine was yesterday as well. 120/80 and my resting heart rate is at 60, which I think is supposed to be pretty good as well. After I get over the crud, I am going to get a complete physical so they can check my HDL, LDL, and triglycerides, plus it is time for the dreaded colonoscopy! Picture Chevy Chase in Fletch singing Moon River! LOL

Feeling a little better today, but just a little weak and tired. Throat is not as sore. That carb free chicken soup must have helped.

Other Kathy, too bad they don't make carb free M&M's!

Hi kids! well I am back from my mass market Australia/NZ cruise and so sorry to hear how sick everyone is! The weather everywhere is just bizarre. I have actually been back for over a week but knew I had gained and just wasn't up to 'fessin' up just yet. Today I went to my diet place and I gained 5 lbs since I was last there in Feb, so back to it. I did do lots of walking on my trip (the ship was ginormous) and the food wasn't too great (Princess) so I guess I could have been worse. Next week will be better for all of us.

Don , that is so exciting and validating to hear someone say "wow".

Kathy, we all know what willpower you have, you'll be fine at your convention.

Speedy recovery to all!

Feeling pretty good tonight and actually got out for a walk. Kind of a leisurly pace, 2 miles in 40 minutes. I am going to go back to my weight workout tomorrow. Tomorrow is my weigh in day as well, so it will be interesting to see what happened this week after being sick and missing exercising for three days.

Tomorrow I will purposely start slowing my weight loss down by adding carbs slowly back into my diet. This will be the time that I figure out exactly what my carb tolerance level is in order to slowly lose and eventually maintain.

Helen...what was you secret? We're boarding the Mariner on Friday and I'm a little nervous about how I'll handle my food choices - it's such a battle between enjoying that delicous food (and WINE) or keeping the pounds off - I plan to do lots of exercising but I don't know how far that will get me!

Don...I'm glad you're feeling better. Your determination and results are an inspiration to me.

Glad to hear your back on track Don. After a week of fighting alergies and not exercising, I'm back on track also. I was happy to see I did not gain any weight over the week. It sure felt good to sweat again.

Thanks all! I got back to the gym this morning and got in 35 minutes for 8 miles on the bike, and 20 minutes on upper body weights.

Margo, that is the toughest time for me as well. On cruises, there is so much to choose from and I lose willpower and tend to overdo it! I know what I'm supposed to eat, but then something just happens. Like the waiter pouring wine in my glass, or the chocolate souffle is being placed in front of me! What am I supposed to do? LOL

Dave, glad to hear that you are over your allergies. I think I keep whoever the maker of Zyrtec is, in business!

Weigh in today was also really good. Lost 3.8 lbs last week. So now the total is 69.4 lbs since Mid August (7" in my waist) and 41.4 lbs since New Years Day.

I've been looking into the Tanita scale that measures body fat. It seems that's the one that Margo and Don have. Now that you've had a couple of months of using it, does it seem pretty accurate? Or is it more for monitoring changes?

I went back on Nutri System when we returned from our Disney trip last Thursday and the 4 pounds I gained while we were there are now gone!

I am going to take this one day at a time because I am very weak when it comes to "cheating"! ;)

Dave....I like my scale - it isn't 100%, but measuring body fat is complicated - the reading can vary quite a bit even in one day, but it's great to keep an overall average - mine does reflect my "loss" so it is measuring something right - the number is going in the right direction.

I was also measured at my health club and their measurement was about 2% below my scale average - they use calipers which are consider a "so-so" way of measurement.

I look at the scale as a motivator - but not perfect.

Sue....I hear you! I'm going to enjoy the food and wine on the Mariner next week - but as my weightloss counselor advised me - they have lots of good food choices available onboard - it's the bad choices that I need to avoid :D Now how much fun would that be?????

I've also discovered that I'm at one of those awful "burnout" stages in my weight loss - I've had good results but I'm tired of thinking about what the next meal should be and I'm craving some "off limit" things - last night I had some wonderful cheese - definitely a NO NO

Anyone have advice on getting past this part - Don and Kathy - you've done it haven't you?

Margo
