Not wanting to start my own thread but I want you all to know it's been 2 1/2 weeks without a smoke. This ain't over yet. I'm here to tell you. It's hard.

There is a strange new smell in my car. My daughter tells me it's the leather car seats and it always smells that way. I like the smell of leather.

Hang in there. I know that you can do it.
If you still haven't started smoking again I will buy you a drink on PARTY.

Chip,

Wait, it gets better than the smell of leather. Food tastes better, flowers smell better. Your house smells better and your clothes. And the girls prefer to smell your cologne than the stale cigarette smoke. Plus, you can stay inside after dinner at a nice restaurant - no running outside to the parking lot or curb - in the rain!

Hey Chip, that's great. Just keep plugging away. Pretty soon the smell of a smokey room or car will really bother you!

Reading all this is helping. You just have those momments. I have to promise that I won't become a smoking nazi. Like the lady in the next stateroom who complained about me smoking on my balcony, for the entire six weeks I was on the ship.

Chip, that's great. I just said to Dave yesterday that you hadn't posted lately, and knowing how hard it is to make the decision to quit, I was wondering how you were doing. Dave chose to quit drinking after his one year endoscopy showed no improvement in his Barrott's Esophagus and he's been struggling with watching football and no beer. So we can appreciate how hard you are working at this.

Chip great job!!! I know it is tough. I have been on this diet now for two weeks. My wife and I both love wine, but no wine on our diet. We can have wine cooked in our meal as long as it is reduced. I opened a bottle of Cabernet tonight to saute the mushrooms in and it was hard smelling it cooking and to keep from pouring myself a glass.

I guess I am motivated now. I was down another six pounds from last week. That is now 24 pounds since the first of the year. YIPPEEEEE!!! I didn't think that was even possible without losing an appendage!!! LOL

I know it is going to slow down but I am really happy to be off to a great start. Working really hard to get in shape for our May cruise.

Wishing everybody great success with their weight loss goals for this year. This is great having this LTC support group.

Kathy, I missed this earlier. That is too funny. I am on a low carb diet so I told my wife that I was reading about the Italian Pasta Diet and then read it to her. I must admit my Italiano is a little rusty.

In my college days, my roommate and I would go through our fridge and kitchen cabinets and throw out all the junk food when we wanted to lose a couple of pounds. Dave, who doesn't need to diet himself, supports me in trying to lose the extra holiday weight I've put on although he does sometimes tempt me. The problem is that I am struggling like I haven't done in a long time and he has corn chips, potato chips, and other good "binge" foods. So, I am placing my hope that you guys will help me. What is making it possible for all of you, who must also have husbands with junk food in the house, that you all are getting those slim, healthy bodies?
I'm losing my confidence! I know I can make it, I just need some help!

Well, for me, I am tired of buying clothes in the size I wear. I am really motivated because I want to feel my best. I am responsible only for me. My diet includes limited junk food so that I won't feel deprived. I like the individual sized things since they limit me.

Ironically, I talked with my nutritionist this morning. She is one of us herself and does the same daily struggle we do. She has lost 100 lbs and kept it off for 15 years. She shared with me the personal binge she went on yesterday. There was nothing in the house that was bad so she ate one Healthy Choice Macaroni and Cheese and 6 fat free jello's. She had me in stitches when she told me that. So there is a reason to keep it out of the house.

Don - You are doing SOOO!!! good!!! 24 lbs as of Tues. I think you said you are eating a low carb diet. Are you following any particular diet or just doing it your way? As much as I like carbs, I'm starting to think I better at least go to a low-carb diet (still counting calories tho). I had to give up the wine too. I'd love to hear details of what you are eating.

Kathy - Your story about your nutritionist is so funny. I hardly call that a binge. But you're right, that if the bad stuff isn't in the house, it's pretty hard to go on a huge binge. And I agree with you about the individual sized things - they are my lifesavor. I hope more and more food products start coming that way. I know it's more expensive, but definitely worth it!

Claudia - the last 5 to 15 lbs are always the hardest. Is there anything special you are now doing in addition to how you lost the first lbs? I need more tips and ideas!!!

I'm still fighting to lose more weight - but I'm still exercising 1 hour a day 5-6 days a week. If I ever get the fat off, I think there is some muscle there :D

Wow, good for you doing all that exercise, Cyndi!

I just walk, do some Pilates, and do some Tai Chi too. It's not enough. I'm on the South Beach, eating well mostly, not cheating too much. But I have not lost an ounce yet.

I'm thinking of buying an elliptical trainer. Any experiences there? I have no time or patience to go to a gym, it's desperately cold outside, so other than skating, outdoor exercise is limited to walking. It's got to be a small one, because my house is small, and it's got to be a cheap one, because I refuse to pay huge amounts for something that may not work out.

I have tried out various machines in stores, and like the feeling. Any comments?

Cyndi, you are so good about working out! I'm basically doing the same things I've been doing all along.......One thing I did find out though, at one point after I had lost 20-25 pounds, I just seemed to not be able to lose another pound. I got discouraged and really cheated for a couple days. Then I got mad at myself for cheating and went right back on my diet. Sure enough, within 3-4 days I started losing again! Friend of mine, who was on Weight Watchers, told me later that this is something Weight Watchers advises their members to do if they hit a plateau. All I know is that at that time, it worked for me..........

Hi Wendy, if you haven't heard my story, I have an Elliptical trainer. It's main function is as a dressing "table", to hang dry my delicate clothes, etc. I bought a mid-priced one from Sears a few years ago. Not the cheapest, they didn't feel stable enough and of course not the expensive Precor's that you find in the gym. Has all the bells and whistles, goes back/forward's. I've been happy with it, and actually do try to use it on occasion. However, it is as long as a treadmill. I have it up against the wall in our very small office (12x11). I had it in our downstairs guestroom and decided (after John put it together) that it just had to go upstairs :D You can only imagine the words that were flying out of his mouth as we balanced it going up the stairs

Kimmi,

Yes, I don't want to end up having another place to hang my clothes, for sure!

I am looking at a Sears model too, they are no sale right now--it seems that January is "fitness month".

My husband is supportive, although disinterested. He says if it works, it will be good, and he's willing to put it together for me. Nice.

Loon - It is SO hard when your husband isn't joining in on a diet. Tom & I both fight our weight. It's great when we are on track together and next to impossible when one is on and the other not. Too much temptation. Right now we are both on our diets. Good luck to you. Just hang in there, have some healthy munchies on hand that you can have when he's being bad. Also, ask him to keep his stash hidden somewhere so you don't have to look at it any more than necessary.

Wendy - seems like you are doing quite a bit of exercise. My favorite in the past has been walking after work. But when the time changes I stop because I won't walk at night. Every winter the same problem. This time I decided to do the Denise Austin TV workouts Mon-Fri. (I've said this before, hope I don't sound like a broken record). To me that is better than one or two exercise tapes or CDs that you do over & over again. Every day her workout is a new one. She does yoga, pilates, balancing ball, weight training, floor exercises, low impact aerobics and lots of stretching. Do you think this would help you? Then on Sat I do my walk - 1 hour.

Claudia - I've heard that your body starts fighting the weight loss when it hits a certain point and that you should eat more on some days just to mix it up and fool your body. Maybe that is what happened when you finally lost after a little cheat.

Kimmi - We've had several exercise machines in the past that made great clothes hangers. This time Tom is actually using our stationary bike. Good boy. I've tried it and just find it too boring.

Good luck to all!!

Cyndi, I am pretty much following the Atkins Diet. I have now pretty much figured out that I am allergic to carbs. LITERALLY!!! When I don't have carbs I notice that I don't have cravings and arent' hungry all the time. Less carbs also leaves me more satisfied with having smaller portions and as a result I end up taking in fewer calories. I am also taking vitamin supplements. That helps for sugar withrdrawal which can give you headaches. I am working out 5 days a week for 30 minutes.

Here is what is on my menu for today:

Breakfast: 1 egg fried in Pam w/ 3 thin slices of lean microwavable bacon. (Approximately 2-3 oz of protein)

Lunch: Tuna salad with mayo and celery and a small salad with oil and vinegar dressing (about 4 oz of protein)

Afternoon snack: 1 Atkins shake (about 2 oz of protein)

Dinner: Chicken Dijon with asparagus. Chicken breast in a dijon cream sauce and 6 spears of asparagus. ( approximately 5 oz of protein)

Total is less than 15 grams of carbs for the day and about 13 oz of protein. I don't count calories. I just know that with less carbs, I will eat less food and hence take in less calories. I am more concerned with the carb content and the portions.

Hope this helps.

Don - Thanks so much for the info. No wonder you are doing so well on your weight loss. Sounds like you are doing all the right things with your diet & excercise. :app: I may just break down and give up the carbs - but I'm still fighting it. I have really cut way down on the carbs and am looking for ways to do it even more. I have to say that your menu today does sound good.

You guys are doing great, just wanted to cheer you on!! Wendy, I wanted to add that I think the Elliptical's at Sears are moderately priced as compared to most (higher end) treadmills. I have a NordicTrack and it has everything, the calorie counter & breakdown, timer, mileage, etc. I think on sale it was just under $500, the treadmills I looked at were more than double. But, like Cyndi mentioned, I find it so boring. I have a TV in there and that's about the only way I can do it. Even then I have to cover up the timer, so I don't look at it every other minute. Bad week for me, I am resolving to try again next week  The worst night was John's promotion, wine wine and then some wine, we had a party at a great little Italian place and the brushetta and pasta dishes were out of this world. I will be at a conference all next week in Cocoa Bch, FL, so I am determined to start again. Maybe if I'm away from my family and friends I won't be tempted so much! I don't have a huge weight loss goal, just to get rid of the jiggle and get a flatter tummy. It would be nice to wear a two-piece (bikini  ) in Tahiti! You guys are an inspiration.
BTW, my girlfriend just started Curves. I am not big on gyms, but she swears this is different. Anyone familiar with them?

Kimmi - Special occasions/parties are my BIG downfall. How can you resist all that temptation? Sometimes I wish I could go away to some deserted place for a month just to lose weight. But, then I guess I'd be faced with boredom eating

I heard from a friend that with Curves you can get in and out in 20 minutes with a full workout on their weight machines. I've been thinking about it. Especially after PIP when I want to STAY good for the long haul.

Hang in there, Kimmi. And remember, many of us are just wanting to look good in a one piece. So you are way ahead of me, at least!! :)

Cyndi, Ida now has a free week at Curves..she
thinks it is OK but her impression is they are
after her $ more than her fitness..there is a one time fee (about $149) and a monthly cost thereafer. If you stop going and start again, u get to pay the start up fee again. Recommend,
a fitness studio that only charges you when you use it--versus a long term contract...then again,
you can join the Army and we will provide (at no charge) you all the fitness equipment, training, trainers, even an indoor Olmpic size pool--here in Atlanta anyway..r/wes

Wes - Good point about watching the upfront fees. Thanks for the info. How did Ida get a free week? It would be a good way to see if it is worth it.

As for the Army. Well, I thought of that before when you were telling me how you stayed in shape - that the Army must have been a big help in that area of discipline :D But you can probably tell by now - I'm just a big wimp! Besides - would they let me off for PIP?

Cyndi, it's simple, just take the basic
training for eight weeks, then ask for leave..if
I we're your commander, I would approve your
leave. :)

Ida's free week was suggested in an Atlanta
Newspaper ad, but when she went in she just
asked to try it for a week and they gave it to her for free...why don't you try that approach..r/wes

Can't hurt to ask.

8 weeks of basic training should just about do it for me - but how can I be assured the commander would be a cruise fan like you?

I am familiar with Curves Kimmi. I joined about three years ago. I have a less-than-perfect opinion of them. They don't have certified staff working at them for starters. I herniated a disc in my back and ended up having surgery almost two years ago. At that time I had a large number of women telling me they were hurting in their backs or knees or wherever. Because I knew several of them, I know that they went on to get medical treatment as well. As a side note: not that they were responsible for what happened to me after my surgery, but... I was diagnosed last month with a herniated disc in my neck and radiculpathy. I happened to mention to my surgeon that I was still having leg pains. They did another MRI and discovered that my discs in my lower back have all totally collaspsed. I guess I just feel that had I never gone to Curves, I never would have herniated the disc in the first place. If you are interested in going someplace to work out, please do yourself a favor and go somewhere where the staff has credentials.

I went to a place where the creditialed trainer kept pushing me to do a cardio workout way above my ability. It took me a couple days to recover. He did a bootcamp workout with me. When the credentialed trainer I was working with at home heard about that workout she was appalled. Some are better than others. The credentials don't mean a whole lot - it's a day or two of testing at most depending on which organization they go to for certification.

Kathy - I wonder if the bootcamp workout is anything like the one Wes is trying to talk me into with the Army? Sounds like what I need, but not what I want

Loon - Ouch!!! I hope you are not in too much pain. Thanks for the advice about Curves. You and Wes have saved me some big bucks and potential pain.

My daughter and wife both went to Curves and loved it. However, when they told me that it was a combo of resistance training and aerobics, I asked how it was done. They move from one machine to another while constant movement. My thoughts were that when they went to the resistance training, they were breaking the aerobic portion of the plan and not keeping their heart rate elevated consistantly. All the experts say that for an exercise to have aerobic benefits, you must keep your heart rate consistantly elevated for a period of at least 20 minutes. Of course, I am no expert, one look at my body will tell people that!!! LOL Unlike Kimmi, I will never look good in a two piece bikini!!!

Don - you are so funny!!! Come on, we'd love to see a picture of you in a two piece - even a one piece

Now being serious for a moment - thanks for your input in the "Curves" issue. Sounds like there a more cons than pros.

Don, I'm sure you'd look just fabuuuulous :D So, you guys are shooting down all my idea's, I suppose I will just have to resort to chocolate again :D I did go by Curves and got the lowdown, SPECIAL right now (of course), $75 down, $39 mo., can break the contract. Wes, listen to this, in our station we have a NEWLY built gym with all new equipment. It is literally two doors away from my office. It is free, and in fact, they allow us one hour per day for working out, whenever we choose. I have never opened the door, you would think it was the doorway to a black hole. I look through the window occasionally. I am starting to think that maybe I am just lazy, or I don't want it bad enough. I'm sure I will get disgusted with myself again, soon. But until then, I will be having fine french cuisine with some fine LCTer's :app:
